Great idea. Low speed marine diesels are very efficient, better than 50%. But they usually run at less than 100 rpm. A generator for ship's power at 50 Hz has to go at 1500 RPM exactly. Converting 100 RPM to 1500 RPM up to 7 MW is an expensive piece of mechanics even with a doubly fed electrical machine. Apparently they can manage the whole conversion electronically? That would be great for wind turbines where the gear box is the first thing to wear out. Or maybe I don't understand what they are doing here.
