I am surprised that you didn't mention a line of dialogue that Hibbert mentions in Season 10 about how laughter is the best coping mechanism against stress, and is the reason he chuckles so frequently. It really makes you rethink about his character with that information.
True story. Many of the doctors never smiled during my first hospital job. They should have emulated Dr. Hibbert.
I may be wrong, but I think there's also a throwaway line where he says that overuse of some sort of substance (I think it might have been either nitrous oxide or heroin) can lead to random spontaneous laughter.
Hes a doctor He chuckles to ease the stress of patients
@@thatonebonkchoyguy I think it was morphine.
We need an a history episode on those Shelbyville jerks and their attractive cousins.
Just Shelbyville in general maybe.
It is weird how in the Lemon tree episode Shelbyville is portrayed as actual hicks, not just hicks from a Springfielder perspective. Yet in the episode with the Shelbyville play they seem normal
@@TheMightofDab Well, the kind of people who can spend their time caring about a stupid lemon tree probably aren't going to be part of the city's upper crust.
A Simpsons Histoires on Kearny would be interesting. He’s such a deep character for some reason
It could be kind of a continuation on his "simpsons time-line" video
He kinda functions in comic book time but, unlike captain America where you just add years to the amount of time he stayed on ice or Iron man and the punisher where you change the war... His story has so much "don't think too much about it" or "this all happened a while ago" that it looks like a wolverine resume.
He's a kid with a son that's gone through a divorce but needs a fake ID to drink
It might make sense to do Dolf and Jimbo right after
The Kerney timeline is the best timeline.
I would support this as a teenager and as the father of a teenager.
I second that emotion.
All the bullies need a Simpson’s History
I think Homers Brain should get the Simpsons Histories treatment. A very interesting and layered character
Yes!
20 dollars can buy many Histories episodes
@@Joseph_Drew_III Explain how.
You mean a Simpsons _Mysteries_ video?
I know it's not a character, but i would like a Simpsons Histories on Shelbyvill.
The fire hydrants are yellow!
They also have strangely attractive cousins there as well.
And they drink ffud
I mean it's called Simpsons *Histories*, not Simpsons *Characters*. Shelbyvill should be free game.
That's a great idea I'm. Currently watching every episode start to finish and I'm gonna start a Simpsons chanel any ideas ?
The Hibbert laugh is so iconic I sometimes find myself laughing in a very similar manner naturally, just because its so ingrained into my subconscious
Too bad they killed it.
@@RunstarHomerwoke killed another cartoon character.
“Every time we see Dr. Hibbert, we’re bringing a tiny bit of 1991 to 2021.”
Wow, that’s such a bar. 💰💰💰
If there is one Simpson’s history I really want to see is what kind of “current events” episodes they do. Done in order of presidential terms.
@@Marylandbrony That would be an extensive one, I imagine. Unless you just cherry-picked the biggest moments.
Bring on the director's cut, lol
I dont get it
You know who needs a Simpsons Histories? Jasper Beardsley. There's a shocking amount of snippets into his life, especially a big piece of backstory from a deleted scene with Rev. Lovejoy.
Moon pie.... what a time to be alive! 😂
@@amyrobertson5360 also can’t forget “ Staring at my sandals. That’s a paddlin !”
That's a paddlin'
Dr. Hibbert has the reputation for becoming too much like Dr. Nick in the later years. So for this one, I really wanted to get into the weeds with this character study, go over a lot of the examples to see if this actually happened or not. This ended up being a less conventional Simpsons Histories, as there less relationship and character arc stuff to go over, and more the plot stuff and meta/production aspects surrounding the character.

Wait, I'm confused I thought Jeannie was one of his kids...I could have sworn there was an episode or so where he was her dad...
You forgot Homer Simpson Syndrome!
@@skiprockjr.6881 "Oh, why me?!"
Early on, Hibbert was one of those Marge-type characters, like Flanders, Smithers or Helen Lovejoy, that acted like a person in the real world would and added a sense of realism to Springfield
i once again nominate the barflies, sam and larry. probably the most disproportionate amount of screentime vs spoken lines of any characters.
What do you call it when alcoholics lie about vomiting? Barflies' barf lies.
This is a perfect Simpsons History recommendation. On the level of “Stamp the Ticket” guy.
A Simpsons History on either Carl or Lenny or even both would be extremely interesting. They’ve both been in a bunch of episodes but most people just see them as Homer’s co-workers and drinking pals, and hell the Carl spotlight episode in season 24 gave us some interesting insight on Carl’s past
Lenny's a war hero, but he lives in a ramshackle house and then a fancy apartment with an elevator. What an odd life.

I know its not neccesarily as small time a character as this series mostly focuses on, but I really think a discussion of the seperation and diverging characterisation Patty and Selma had would be a really interesting topic. Like they've changed considerably from their near same character status from the pilot to today.
He's honestly one of the best characters imo, he perfectly fits the straight man role, while still feeling like he belongs in Springfield.
I always felt like Dr. Hibbert in his earlier years was a parody of Bill Cosby from the Cosby Show, what with him being a wholesome black Doctor with quirky mannerisms like his laugh.I wonder if a spotlight episode on him would have even worked. He seemed to work best in one-off appearances on an episode, in and out before his character could have gotten stale.
I think that's what he was supposed to be.
Makes sense why he's such a perv in that case...
back then too many black characters made the show a black show. (Maybe even today) hibbert has a black wife. it was way too black for tv. hense his play on malcom sex and rosa barks. keep it light hearten and keep it cute. when the simpsons found out they were black and helped the underground railroad, dr. hibbert wasnt even mentioned once in that episode.
Hibert appears to actually be Bill Cosby.
@@richardarriaga6271 Not Cosby, he's parody of Dr Huxtable who was played by Cosby. Fictional character based on another fictional character.
"We want to give opportunities to more minority voice actors... So we hired one who already has one of the longest resumes in that industry." - Hollywood thinking everybody
I was about to say Kevin Michael Richardson is a legend how does he need more work? The guy is in everything.
There was no reason to change his voice either. All they wanted to do was take one job from one guy and give it to someone else, at the expense of iconic characters' voices. Animated characters ARE their voices.
@@johnpoole3871 Can confirm this. I looked at a loaf of bread, Kevin Michael Richardson was listed as the third ingredient.
Because it isn’t about opportunity. It’s about skin color.
if they wanted to address positive representation of a demographic...
is it acceptable to have walking stereotype character that insults an ethnic group, if the actor belongs to that group?
why would it matter if a group is being portrayed positively by someone outside that group?
do we need to change Smithers's VA to a gay? should Comic Book Guy be voiced by a fatter man? is Yeardly Smith too old to voice Lisa? should Nancy Cartwright be allowed to voice a male character?
Excuses about Dr Hibbert's VA change in S32 are why characters like Apu are being erased from television shows such as The Simpsons.
Captain McCallister for the next Simpsons Histories? A lot of people don't even know his actual name and just call him "The Sea Captain", that's the sign of a character worth diving into more (no pun intended).
Yar, I don't know what I'm doin'.
The Sea Captain would be interesting. For me he marks the show's transition from being a family sitcom to being about what a wackyland Springfield is.
Gotta love McCallister. A character who's shtick is so incredibly specific you almost never see him and sometimes wonder why he exists.
I really loved his spotlight beginning in that somewhat recent episode where he was looking for gold
I loved him as Poseidon!
Simpsons fans: "I can't explain Hibbert's history... can you..?"
TheRealJims: "Well, I'll give it a go, I mean, it's my job."
What, exactly, is the point of your comment?
@@waynemarvin5661 it's from Who Shot Mr Burns Part 1.
I understood that reference!
I would be interested to see... NED FLANDERS. Specifically a study of the phenomenom known as "flanderization" where his satirical traits were gradually amped up so that season 2 Flanders is a totally different person from season 22 Flanders. The man even used to make and drink his own beer
A simpson histories on Moe Syzslak would be very interesting, but also extremely long imo
Yeah that'd be like a 30+ Minute long video. He's one of the most important non-Simpson characters along with Flanders, Skinner and Mr Burns.
I can see the thumbnail already...
Front faced Moe...

I remember that I often thought that it was weird that a big family like Hibbert's was never expanded upon, and that I would like to know more about the. But I also think that this desire is probably more important than its resolution, because it would probably be disappointing.
It's good to want something of a show that you will never get, it adds to the few mysteries that remain.
Also, Hibbert's family is just too detached from the usual cast to justify a whole episode about them. They're from a different world, they wouldn't have anything more to share than in a normal episode.
I hope Sideshow Mel gets covered one day. He has such a backstory if you look for it
It does track, though, that the replacement for Sideshow Bob would be another high-minded intellectual like Mel. It fits with Krusty's comedic philosophies.

I like how Bernice is still wearing that very early-90s jacket with the big shoulder pads. Lol
'I too have a brother I'll never see, he went on to be a Jazz musician or some such. oh well, Bye bye'
Since you mentioned Snowball in the video, I think it would be interesting to see a Simpsons histories about the simpson family pets.
With how many times the Simpson family has gotten hurt over the years, barring his shady side, it's understandable why Hibbert charge so much.
Hibbert definitely stands out as one of those characters who is based on reality. Just a doctor one of the team met in life who had a funny laugh then they wrote it in
And Harry Shearer had free hands to improvise it ☺👍
A fascinating little trivia fact for me is that originally he was going to be a white woman named Julia Hibbert, but once the staff found out they were gonna be going head-to-head with the Cosby Show during Season 2 they decided to make him a Cosby parody instead. I wonder what the female version of Dr. Hibbert would've been like and how she would've gotten used, because the show doesn't have many recurring female characters who aren't primarily defined as wives and/or mothers. Curious if they ever drew up any designs for her before she was scrapped, because if so, I'd love to see them.
Crazy cat lady... okay not the most positive one, uh, there's Cookie Kwan and that lawyer/corp lady off the top of my head.

@@Super_Mario128 nobody would do that
@@Super_Mario128 Nobody is asking you to do any of those things. You are not being oppressed.
@@Super_Mario128 I feel like, if they were to bring back Apu and his family, it'd be a good opportunity to give exposure to Indian voice actors/actresses...I feel like that would be more respectful than completely throwing them out. Introducing a new Indian family after getting rid of Apu would be too jarring and Apu's family has been expanded on so extensively over the years that I feel like it'd be a waste of potential not to use the characters.
I completely forgot that he was introduced in season 2. He seems like a season one character to me because of how frequently he appears.
Kevin Michael Richardson has had consistent work since the 90's. The voice change gave zero new opportunities to anyone.
Him and phil lamarr are both just the immediate go to for "black guys" in animation
I personally just don't like recasts in general, but as you say if they really wanted to help minority voice actors they could have got someone new in Cause i bet if Kevin Michael Richardson was busy they'd have got lamarr since they already knew him back on Futurama
I say let KMR have Hibbert. It took them TEN YEARS to make him a cast member on the show. This is the least they can do. Or they can just make more black characters 🤣

@@ichimaru96 No... Nah he might kill someone. Besides black celebrities come on the show mainly to play themselves. He's better off sticking with Mike Tyson Mystery
Exactly.
Hibbert is one of those characters people don't think about, yet when you look at it, he actually suffered greatly from the show turning into a wacky cartoon. The show already had a quack in Dr. Nick Rivera, yet the series transitions Hibbert into a malpractice dodging shyster.
My favorite scene with him is the terror sweat scene. One of my favorites!
I am once again asking for a Simpsons Histories on Artie Ziff
Yes that would be awsome
Eh, he's only appeared a couple times and we actually have a good sense of his history (i.e. with Marge).
@@youdbettertube Actually, he’s a very good example of how the show started to bring back old one-shot characters in the middle years and beyond (like SLH’s old owner) for the sake of episode plots, and how it responded to popular tech in culture. Mostly, I just want to see Jim’s take on him, given that most of his episodes are Marge/Homer relationship episodes
@@Whymust898 that's fair.
His voice actor changed in season 32 you say...
I will never be affected by this
Mad respect for Jim’s stick-to-itness, but I gotta agree. Seasons 20+ are straight up unwatchable.

@@BrendanJSmith yea there are some gold nuggies
@@guitar_jero for me I think the unwatchable seasons were from 2004-2011. 2012, or whenever the big NEDNA dating thing was going on is when I started to pay attention again. The newest episodes have been enjoyable for me and I like seeing the characters continue on.
"I thought tonight was the Rocky Horror picture show..." *Chuckles*
Dr. Hibbert is for sure one of the characters of all time.
does hibbert still have the cosby sweaters? i can't really recall a recent episode that had them, i would imagine they'd want to drop that aspect of him, but i could also see them keeping it with the mindset that it's grown into its own thing within the show.
now he's voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, the voice of The Batman's Joker. So all I hear that character when watching the newer simpsons.
Best scene is definitely the "Terror Sweat" scene. It shows everything Hibbert is, a good doctor but also a bit of a jokester with a slight hint at him being a pricey doctor as well.
In my mind Bernice became an alcoholic to cope with the constant infidelity in the beginning but I think she stays bc of the money and status and probably has her own thing on the side as well, that's just my theory tho
Not gonna lie, juxtaposing Hibbert’s love for the ladies with his Cosby parodies has got me thinking conspiracy theories 🤔
And SA joke…hmmm👀
Hibbert's amoral side was unintentional foreshadowing for what we learned about Cosby. Who knew?
I'm genuinely shocked to hear lenny has never had a spotlight episode. Hes had so many goofy moments, but I hope one day all eyes are on Lenny!
He is one of my favourite especially his laugh
I’d love to see a Simpsons History on Cletus! The guy has a huge family, does a bunch of odd jobs, and has some great moments, so certainly there’s some interesting history surrounding him
One of my favorite things about this channel is the music. Ive replayed ocirina of time already because of this channel :)
"He's not the kinda character that would pop up in Moe's for a one liner"
"Don't snap my undies"
Nice DP
I'm still gonna cast my vote for Seymour Skinner. He brings a lot of different kind of jokes to the show, whether at school, at home with his mother, his romantic shortcomings, and he's even a war veteran, all wrapped up into one character. He's someone who presents himself so confidently, yet he's so incompetent at almost everything he does and I find that fascinating.
I'd like to see a sequel to "just stamp the ticket" man. That was almost 3 years ago, and so much has happened with him since/
Most importantly, Hibbert loves to laugh. But only if something tickles him just right.
I think the reason why his wife doesn't leave him despite the affairs is because he's a doctor with a ton of money 🤣
⛪️
She's also implied to be a raging alcoholic so maybe they just turn a blind eye to one another's dysfunctional behavior!
Squeaky Voiced Teen! He's probably got the most international doppelgangers in the series.
Shelbyville! They swore they'd get back at us by spiking our water supply but they didn't have the guts.
I completely forgot about the whole Snowball II thing. Man, that was a stressful episode to watch. Haven't watched it since it first aired, but it stuck with me.
On that note, an episode on Snowball II (or, 'the Snowballs', I guess you could call them) would be neat.
Disco Stu, has some History too
13:55 See that's how I have seen it. Bernice only had the problem when it was a professional point of interest, but they are polyamorous/swingers/open. Even in those relationships there are rules.
this man just will not miss banger after banger
Yo new vid what a great way to start my Friday
I will always love this series. It’s so chill and yet so intriguing. My attention never lapses for a moment because you are so engaging Mr Jims, and along with the music it sets the atmosphere and the pace for what we are about to watch.
I agree, I would love to see a spotlight episode to see what his life is like. I feel it would be a melancholy take, as comedians such as himself usually have the most touching and depressing backstories.
For your next character, I would be interest in Marge’s mother. I feel she is sometimes constantly there for a short time and then drops off of the face of the earth for ages. The dynamic between her and Marge, her and Patty and Selma, her and Homer, her and grandpa and as well as the rest of the family is interesting. I feel there is both a love and disdain for her? At least from what I vaguely remember. It would mean that you would have all the grandparents covered :). Keep up the fantastic work! You always make my day!
Something bothers me every time I hear this episode. If getting more voice actors opportunities in the industry was the goal, they wouldn't have hired Kevin Michael Richardson.
So glad I found this channel and subbed!
I had a shit day and that second opinion pun you opened with made me laugh my ass off! Thank you very much for that dude.

I'd love to see a Lindsey Naegle video. She's one of the few characters I can think of that was introduced as late as Season 8 who went on to be recurring. It'd be interesting to see solely how Modern Simpsons develops a character

Hibbert: sounds like a wager to me
Kristy: I'll take a piece of that
Dr Hibbert is really good at few second gags rather then long drawn out diatribes
I love this videos. So chill.
Love these videos!
I think squeaky voice teen would be interesting as it took him a long time to become consistent in his appearance, mannerisms, and even name, seemed to have one of the slowest rises to prominence of any character
I think a fundamental reason for Hibbert never having a spotlight episode may deal with his inspiration and appearance being heavily influenced by Bill Cosby from the Cosby show, like if they wanted to do an episode focused on Hibbert they should have done one WAY before any controversy with that actor had happened.
12:43
Sometimes your editing just does and it gets me lol
Keep up the good work
These videos are so good
That's shit changing voice actors give the job to the best person skin or sex gender doesn't matter, I'll never get behind that moment who vex lost.
If it have a baby in a show should get a baby to voice the role not an adult, if there's aliens should find some so they could get the chance to voice there role just saying.
Could you do Lunchlady Doris next?
When I watched your last Simpsons Showdown, I realized, that her voice actress had a role in The Critic too, also named Doris.

I love this channel because when I go back to work on Monday, and my coworker asks me what I did on the weekend, I can say I watched a UA-cam video about Dr. Hibbert from the simpsons.

I'm impressed by the way you cover the voice acting change while avoiding the huge mess that often comes with discussing it.
It's weird that his biggest roles in the series are in the non canon Treehouse of Horror segments
I spent the last month washing every season of Disney plus, and only after washing this I realised 'damn, Hibbert must he the last side character who HASNT had a spotlight'

I want the history of Cletus. I feel like his backstory is very convoluted, but he's surprisingly connected to the family.
We need a SH on the Charles Bronsen voiced Wiseguy-- the smartass worker dude that does all the different jobs.

I wonder if they actually used his voice as inspiration. It just hit me one day after I'd watched a Charles Bronson movie how similar he sounds to him.
@@AlkisenSuper I once heard a DVD commentary where the guy who does his voice said so.
Hibbert punching through that frame is one of my favourite visual jokes in the series.
Also, is he the least hideous of the face-on shot simpsons characters?
Even though I haven't watched an episode in years, I can't help feeling glad that some things are seeming to last since I was born
The hibberts are strange, production-wise, there hasnt really been any consistency on who his kids are aside from the daughter. I have always wondered how many kids he has, and I always rationalized it in my head that Julius is the only Hibbert to lead a stable life and maybe he looks after his nieces and nephews from his, seemingly many and somewhat troubled, siblings and half-siblings
Five kids, but only three of them appear regulary.
"A Michael Jackson version of a Cosby sweater" oh no
