Listening to this video made me remember a quote I love about credit cards.
"Credit cards are useful only for those who don't need credit. For everyone else it's the most expensive source of borrowing"

This is actually quite a brave video Akshat.
I also have always evaluated credit cards as a means of Corporate companies promoting consumerist culture. For the same reason I have never owned a credit card and will never own one in future.
An example in which I have seen my friends who where dead against watching crappy movies at the theatre after getting the credit card started going to theatres every month to watch crappy movies simply because they were offered discounts.
Also as you said in the video that we cannot compare our culture to that of the United States. In United States the social security is strong enough to take care of their people who are interested in consumerist culture.

    1. You think you are spending on needs but actually you have crossed the limits for example 1chps pack without a credit card but with one, I shall buy 3.
    2. Unnecessary consumeristic, materialistic life which could be simpler.
    3. One the name of discounts I shall buy higher than required leading to bad debts same as first but this is more focused towards non-essential things. I wanted entry-level phone but because I saw discounts I bought a mid-level or even high-level

Earlier, when I got my first credit card, I use to buy vegetables, petrol, or using every time where I can find a swipe machine. I got lots of rewards points. Here is the trick of credit cards. So, I had 50000rs spends on credit card and I have 1 Lac in my account. In the back of my mind, I always thought I have lots of money and which leads me to buy more unnecessary stuff. To reduce the burden, we will accept the emi conversation offered to us. When we take a pause on a later date and look back, we realise how much extra we have paid wherein on the first place the expense itself was unwanted.

Nice video. But its important to understand that it is addressed to general public. the 999 out of 1000 people. Answering at question at 10:31. Who pays for credit card conveniences? Credit card companies rely on you to use these conveniences to a point beyond what you can afford. such that you have monthly payments at high interest rates. However this is a double edged sword for the credit card company as well. There are those people as you said, one in a thousand, who spend using credit cards, to get benefits like reward points, insurance, risk free safe spending, availability of customer care etc. These are amazing benefits if you make your payments on time. A basic rule to follow is to have cash in bank at least as much as your credit limit, and then credit cards no longer attract unnecessary purchases, since you already have to money to pay for what you would have otherwise bought using credit cards.
Secondly, Credit card in the US are needed to build credit. They arent in India. In the US if you dont have any credit, it is not considered a good thing. Note that having credit doesnt mean having loan. Having credit means having credibility that the banks would give you a loan if you wanted one. To build this credit, you need to have credit cards. the more the better.

Actually one big advantage of credit card is in case of a fraud you will not lose money directly from bank account, which is what happens if a debit card is affected by fraud. While paying credit card bill you can alert customer care about fraudulent transactions hence can avoid paying for that transaction in the bill. So that amount that was affected by fraud will be safe in your account

You hit the nail on the head. I too don't like credit cards. But given how lawless this country is, having a credit card protects your bank account from fraud. Banks really don't care if your account has been hacked and all your life savings stolen. A credit card provide at least one more layer between scamsters and your money. Ironically the best point has the least amount of likes.

To the point Akshat. Very well explained. Even I'm someone who has fallen to these credit card traps in the past and have paid huge interests, even more than the principal amount. I'm also of the same view that it's best to avoid using a credit card. I see many people having credit card debts simply falling to traps of minimum credit card payments.

    Amazing video Akshat!
though I own a credit card, I believe it is in my nature to not indulge in frivolous spends. I think it is very important to keep in my mind that you need to repay the credit card money in a month. As you rightly said, its all about the psychology!
However, I would like to point that card companies make their money mostly from the retailers. People pay the price only if they are revolvers or are paying annual membership fees (which can very easily be reversed nowadays).
Keep up the good work! :)

This is so true, people don't understand that credit card loans are the most expensive loans out there which charges them somewhere around 35-40% interest rate per annum, but just because of some small lucrative offers by the credit card companies people end up neglecting this big loss.

So I watched your video today, I would like to show some Pros and Cons of using credit card, (I'm not against your views nor in support of credit card company) -
    Cons -
    1. If not used properly you can be in huge debt.
    2. They lure you to buy goods beyond ur reach ( expensive) by giving unbelievable discounts.
    3. You buy more number of products against what actually needed.
    Pros -
    1. It gives you benefits like lounge access ( rather what you said in your video, lounge access means food for ₹2, in which you can eat anything and not paying any extra amount, the way you mentioned is very different).
    2. Help to pay bills very conveniently.
    3. You get no cost emi ( again a arguable points)
    4. Save us from frauds by retailers.
    5. Provide insurance........and many more.
One Point Summary - if you know how to spend and where to spend wisely and pay your bills on time then credit card is boon(good) or else it's a curse(bad).
I have seen this, I use credit card and have savings too but on the other hand my friend is in debt of lakhs of rupees.

Yes as you said its a psychological thing, actually credit cards not having that much power to hurt your finance, instead its very good if you have proper mindset to spend wisely and pay the credit bills on time (I have chosen to pay it through auto debt mode so no need to worry about that also). If you use credit cards wisely(use it just like your debt card and make normal purchase only simple as that) its having lot of benefits like offers, cashbacks etc and actually it helps you to build a good financial discipline as well.

Hey Akshat, here's my theory about how CC companies make money. They actually profit off a user who misses their payments but has the potential to pay. Someone who never misses a payment schedule or someone who can't pay up at all are both loss making entities for them.
I think that's why they lure you towards more spends so that when the user starts bordering on their "extra" purchases with essential spends like rent, groceries, investments, etc they will miss out on payments but not entirely lose their ability to pay.
    Am I close?
(A bit unsure because I don't have any data on this)

It's true that the credit card industry is designed to exploit our consumerist behavior, we can game them too by being a Lil bit more careful about how we spend. But then again, it is very easy to get lost in the marketing tactics. Thanks for calling out all these, we really need to know this.
