Up until recently I though that leaving a negative comment on a video was like yelling at the cloud, just a way to feel better and maybe have a chat with other people who watched the video. Then one day I left a negative comment on one of Noah's video (not something super heinous but still making it clear I didn't like his video and questionning him as a critique) and he replied to me. Then I realised that content creator can actually see your comments, it's not just noise, and I felt really ashamed because I like Noah and his channel but the only impression I left on him is a negative one. Now I really try to be nicer and kill my inner gobelin because the noise we make online can actually impact other people. I know it's obvious but I didn't really get it until that interaction.
"I think we only have 5 more years of this pace of content before something will need to change" Damn Joe was right on the money with that guess. Thanks for the awesome vid Avarisi.
The annoying thing is that there's really no way to keep someone from having a parasocial relationship with anyone. You dont even really need to interact directly (commenting, replying, talking) with someone in order to form one. All you really need is to see someone or something everyday, and your brain forms a connection with it. Humans are just really good at forming relationships (even if they are imaginary). You might consider a coworker a friend, even if all you really do is show up and say "hi" to them. You might consider a stray cat you see on your way to work your pet, even if they don't live in your house. And you might see a really big rock on your way home from your daily commute, name it "Fred" because you think it's funny, and now everyday you expect to see him, and you might even be a little sad if you don't. It might be a coworker, stray cat or even a rock. You might not know any of these things personally, but as long as you see them everyday and expect to see them everday, your brain forms a connection to it. Keeping a parasocial relationship at bay is something that the viewer has to do, but you'll never know just how aware a viewer might even be about their behavior.
it's actually very easy to prevent by just looking directly at the camera and saying I am not your friend, i will never ever be your friend, i don't care about you, i will never ever care about you, you do not know me, you are not a part of my life and you never ever will be. you just have to do that once in a while and ban weirdos who take things too far, but stweamers are afraid to stop being friend emulators for sad losers and they perpetuate the cycle indefinitely by pandering to these sad losers and pretending to be their friend. to put it more simply just don't use your drive-thru/ phone call voice to talk to viewers.
This is so extremely true. I never comment really or interact but I’ve been watching the same people for years knowing every detail about their lives as they talk about it- Even joe! I’ve never caught a stream live EVER before but I weirdly see him as a ghostly father figure since I’ve watched his content since 2017. like we all know the meme lore and all his thoughts on things and once you think about it It’s really weird atp it kinda feels uncomfortable knowing this much about all these Random people it feels like we are invading their privacy atp for sure.
I love how Joe mentions the hardest part about working for yourself is knowing when it’s okay to tell yourself to stop. When you’re an employee you can go home assuming that the people above you got things covered in your leave but when you’re in charge of how much time you dedicate to your job its nearly impossible to put down your work and convince yourself you’ve done enough for the day.
I do think about how often Joe tells us anecdotes, especially around Finn and Leo, even in the last year. And what they might think about him sharing these things with such a large audience once they're older, should they ever watch the old VODs.
These rule, ty for making these! Joe has a certain cadence and care when talking about broader semi-serious life stuff that makes these rambles really entertaining. I'm very curious to know if his opinions on being a public figure and parasocial relationships have changed now, given his growth as a streamer.
Very interesting hearing his perspective on it, thank you for the video. Although I haven't taken internet hate very far I am sure I hurt some people over the course of the years I have spent on the internet. My thoughts on this are really jumbled, so I am just going to say that I am happy to have mellowed out over the years and especially coming to the realization that real life interactions are worth so much more than time spent on the internet. I really appreciate the in-depth view Joe has allowed into the topic.
Took a gander at the subreddit and stumbled upon the recent FAQ done by Joe in regards to the W3 video. So much hate from people, apparently many year long supporters eagerly awaiting the release of said video. While I understand not being satisfied with a product not delivered I can't help but think that if it makes you that mad you should have stopped supporting years ago and done something else with your time and money. It is sad to see such outrage at such a banal thing and especially sad seeing a guy insinuate that Joe is a narcissist that beats his wife and kids. Talk about a parasocial relationship gone wrong, eh.
Oh wow, these anecdotes really give context to things I never really understand. Dropping the Patreon is looking like the healthiest thing he did but I never really understood since I am not a part of it.
Man, they're so sweet and it sucks people are so weird about them. I couldnt imagine having to wonder "do they really like ME or do they want something/like this other person im connected to" like lily said. That's awful. I think they both seem really genuine and it sucks to hear how bad it can really be to be a public figure on a platform, even if youre not like tom cruise or something. Cant imagine what being a huge movie star as a woman would feel like. Must be awful, now i see why celebs have a hard time dating. Why get into some weird relationship with a normie when you can be with someone who gets what its like to have weird fans and people who hate you
Talking about the COOP Podcast, there was the pressfarttocontinue incident that was funny at first and then turned into a horrorshow for especially dodger
I only recently starting binging Joseph Anderson content after falling in love with all the compilation videos from people like you. So thank you. I see he hasnt streamed in over a month, nor tweeted. Did aomething happen? Did it all get to be too much?
Nothing happened. He is finishing the witcher 3 vid and taking a short break. He always takes a break once in a while, it's not unusual. He should be back sometime next month.
This was before the Dangenrompa streams, oh god💀💀 32:30 What did that one Psychology paper say again, 90% of the population are assholes or something? Yeah...🙃🙃
I've never heard about anyone driving by Dr Disrepect's house and shooting into it, that's crazy! Anyway, being known by more people than I know myself is a fear or mine, I'd hate to be famous.
15:00, That Dr. Disrespect thing sounds so weird in retrospect. Now I could see someone doing it just because they heard he's a PDF and that boils their blood enough.
Yeah an overdose of blind hatred can eventually wear you down, but let’s look at the other side of the coin: A ton of sheep blindly agreeing with you can over-inflate your ego, just as well.
Not to be a boomer but i think social media and the direct line of communication the average joe (no pun intended) has with a 'celebrity' or online personality has been deterimental to all parties involved. For the public figure, there is direct and untapped access to comments about themselves, either good or bad. For the 'fans', it has caused an epedemic of parasociality (just look at mcyt) and also made people far too comfortable with spewing vitriol because 'muh its online its not real.'
Love the compilations of topics I would never have found joe talking about on my own. An r-word language content warning at the start would be appreciated in the future though, it really caught me off guard.
@@kyle2 just some text at the start of the video saying that the r word is used during the video, mostly because Joe's content is often very safe and inclusive for everyone so it was quite unexpected to hear such a word in content from him.
Hm, I think I must not have respected the amount of time and work he puts into a video. I'd be curious to see him make a 25% effort/time video. I wonder if it'd be obvious. Would people hate it?
So glad my close, personal friend, Joseph Anderson has finally spoken out on this.
Yeah I was just surprised he didn’t even really bring up the really insightful funny and relatable comments I’ve been leaving on his god of war vods

Copium overdose
I know the stream is before Covid, but this has got to be 100x worse after people were starved of social interaction for a long time.
