    Thanks to all your efforts Andrew in all the filming as well as the organisation of the event. It will be great to see the progression of the plots through to harvest. Are there any drills in particular that you would be interested in further at this stage or are you still confident in your freeflow?

      Cheers Adam, it was a very good day and so worthwhile. The Freeflow is great in most conditions except where there is a lot of straw or cover crop. It only cost us £19k 6 years ago so owes us nothing so I’ll never sell it because there will be some times after sugar beet when it’s a bit rough the Freeflow is second to none. I’ll reserve judgment on naming any yet, need to get it through the ground first and see how the plants grow. No drill disappointed, the Sumo and Claydon left the surface rougher but that doesn’t mean they won’t perform

      Thanks Peter. Apologies for the wind but it was very very strong. I’ll get that sorted.

    I have a Moore disc drill but it has an Aitchison seed box on it, some deal Moore did with Aitchison NZ. It's getting a few years on it but been a great drill except for the fact the rats eat the foam seed cup over winter and parts are soo expensive. Mine has cast closing wheels. This last week was the first time I got into trouble with it, even my light soil is too wet and it all clogged up. So no single drill is great all the time from my experience, Im looking for a cheap tine drill for these occasions, that and my 12ft gates are limiting. I doo like the look of these new disc drills, but we just don't earn enough to justify the expense, and they are heavy to pull up hills. Thanks for this series.

      Most 6m disc drills are £100k plus and with todays other costs rocketing, it’s hard to be able to afford them. The sky drill had smooth metal closing wheels.

    Thanks for the videos of the direct drilling day looked to be a great success with good attendance. The wind noise doesn’t distract from the videos and can’t be helped hang on for the iPhone 14 this September and it should be a big improvement thanks Dave .

    Great videos Andrew all this week, great information in them, you need more olly blogs tyres to stop them lorrys parking on your entrances. Hopefully the plots all do well.

      6 and 8 wheeled quarry lorries are the Bain of my life! The plots will show some interesting differences.

    Nice work, are you going to bait the field? Looks like the slugs would be happy in some of those plots

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  2 роки тому +1

      Wasn’t planning to but might as an insurance, would ruin the whole trial if the slugs took half.

    Have you thought of converting the freeflow with dutch openers or the Metcalf conversions?

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  2 роки тому

      Exactly! We tried to make everything very real and life like, the lunchtime 2mm added to that!!
      I have thought about converting the Freeflow and might do that. There are a few different options and will go and look at some and post on here.

      I’m afraid the Simtech is the worst of all the plots. Germination around 45%. ☹️

    I think weather conditions are a big factor in the results of direct drilling, hope you got a chance to roll it think it helps to close the slots

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  2 роки тому

      Definitely, the soil was very wet on the day and we will roll them except Horizon have asked us not to do theirs.

    That horizon looks most similar in way of planting the the weaving gd drill (disc drill) that I believe our neighbiur has just bought

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  2 роки тому

      The GD disc runs at a lot more of an angle which is meant to be easier to close the slot.

    Drills like these are common in some other countries,and closing wheels seem an important part of the drill, I noticed there was quite a bit of seed exposed,I know you are going to roll most of it Mr Ward but this seems extra work on challenging soil. A big thankyou to you and everyone involved for this week of updates,and I look forward to seeing how well the seed germinate etc.

      @@WardysWaffleAndrewWard that’s the interesting part what looks good on the day May not be the best come harvest! Shame there was no JD 750a to compare!

      We’ve tried that and it left a lot of seed uncovered and it had the gutler press wheels fitted. So it was t included in the list.

    I could see some plots don't need rolling but some I feel do. Are you going to roll the ones that didn't close the slots? Or leave them all.

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  2 роки тому

      We’ve been asked to roll them all apart from Horizon plots.

      For a good trial Andrew roll half each plot . Personally i have had more disasters with rolling after dd drills . Slug pellets would do more good than rolling ..

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard

      We’ve done the rolling, will pellet later today.
