Just for fun: The Thorpe's Travel shop also sold 45 rpm music records. I remember going with a pal to buy 'Bobby Vee's 'Rubber Ball' at that shop back in 1961. I thought it was expensive at 6 shillings and 7 pence? His mother wanted the record. First time I was ever involved in buying a record! I was 9 years old!
As a kid from Mitcham Lane in the 60's,I thought Carshalton Beeches was the countryside🤣🤣🤣.Mitcham has changed so much, most of the pubs have gone,The Gardeners is holding out though.Burnt Bullock,Three Kings, the Swan,The Bull,Star and Garter,The Cricketers,Horse and Groom and many others have all gone sadly.
My sister and I bought Bobhy Vee's "Rubber Ball" between us when I was 11 and some years later, when the shop had moved next to the "Majestic" cinema,my mum worked there, but had worked at the cinema many years before, when My grandad was the manager...
Jesus, what, open for 24 years and closed for 12! Can't believe how time has passed. Must be the only McDonalds to ever close down! I always wondered why, so thanks for answering that one.
When Mitcham’s McDonald’s closed they put a sign up on the window thanking people for their custom (“for the last 24 years”) and telling them of nearby McDonald’s. …. When I saw it was closed I went in the Wetherspoons and asked about it. I was told it closed because although McDonald’s paid rent for the three floors, they basically only used the ground floor. …. It was a loss to me. It was the place in Mitcham where you could get a cup of coffee at 6am and there were large windows to view the outside. …. Only one thing was a problem. There was a bleeping device that went off regularly in the cooking area. …. I’ve always hoped it would come back. Bad news about the housing thing.
@ that’s ok. Thanks for the post. Mitcham’s McDonald’s was invariably packed. Even with the “one floor out of three in use” explanation it didn’t seem to make sense that it closed. …. It was also great for taking the toddlers. As a parent I was always looking for a places to get out of the house.
I had my birthday there when I was little, it must have been only a year after it opened. I have photos taken upstairs of us children sitting on toadstool-shaped chairs around tables shaped like flowers (if I remember right, I will need to check the photos).
Seem to remember that Mitcham Car Accessories used to run a Stock car at Wimbledon Spedeworth. Also remember the Shell fish stall and buying a pint of winkles from there. Brings back memories.
@@RogerNorman-q6x I didn't know that. Seems there were quite a few Speedway connections in Mitcham, with the Speedway shoe repairers and Maidment's shop!
By the side of The Bucks Head was a shell fish and jelled eel stall and as a kid one of our neighbours Mrs Betty sporrowhalk would ask me to get her some jelled eels (sorry spell wrong)

I remember buying my first 7" singles from Thorpe's Record Bar at the Fair Green!

@@emiwebber cool! I remember now that there was a kids section upstairs. There was an article in the local paper when it opened.
