80s action movies are great, but great action movies are timeless. The relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh is why this movie works. The whole franchise is great because of the chemistry between these two actors. You should watch them all, on or off camera, either way. This movie is similar to The Last Boyscout, in that it is another buddy action comedy where the two leads work so well with eachother.

You've previously seen Lucia Naff, the actress who plays Dixie, in Total Recall. She played the three-boobed hooker.
Murtaugh wasn't talking about the tree lot shootout when he heard about Riggs' stunt. I think you're watching a cut version; there's another scene in the full version with Riggs, before he and Murtaugh are assigned to work together, in which a gunman was holed up at a school with a sniper rifle. Riggs walks out into the field of fire drawing the gunman's attention and killing him.
This movie pretty much DEFINED the "Buddy Cop" film in the 80s, and is still influencing the genre today.

When Murtagh says 'I heard about your little stunt yesterday. Pretty heroic', I think he's referring to the deleted scene where Riggs takes out a shooter who was targeting children. It still makes some sense with that scene removed, but he comes off more as crazed at the Christmas tree lot.

This is one of the first examples of what is called the "Buddy Cop" genre. Two cops, one serious and by the book, the other a dangerous loose cannon, have to work together. At first they dislike each other, but they come to respect and like each other during the course of an investigation that pits them against a major bad guy. There are dozens of examples but Lethal Weapon remains one of the first and one of the best.

  • @gerstelb
    @gerstelb 2 роки тому +2

The director of this movie, Richard Donner, made many fun movies, including “Superman,” “Ladyhawke,” “The Goonies,” and “Scrooged.” His first big movie was actually a horror/thriller that had a huge cultural impact: “The Omen.”
The underlying theme of this movie, about what happened to Vietnam veterans after the war and how they used what they learned in that war, is a very common one in 80s movies. This one is a bit uncommon in that it has two sets of veterans (Riggs and Murtaugh on one side, and the General and his people on the other) as opposing examples; often there’s just the “good” veteran who’s using his war skills to help someone in trouble, or the “bad/crazy” veteran who’s using them *on* the person in trouble.
The soundtrack to this movie series is unbelievable: score composed by Michael Kamen, featuring him on keyboards, David Sanborn on saxophone, and Eric Clapton on guitar. There was a throwaway title track in this one by a no-name band, but the sequels include original songs by The Beach Boys, George Harrison, Elton John, and Sting.
3:21 You’re right; the term often used for detectives is “plainclothesmen” to distinguish them from the police who wear uniforms.
16:09 If you’re going to watch this series, pause the video before you take a drink - the zingers come out of nowhere, and you’ll choke on your coffee/tea if you’re not careful.

0:15 seconds in, and I'm going to say something here. When this movie came out, I didn't fully understand Riggs. However, when my first wife died of cancer in 2006, I became keenly aware of what Riggs was going through. Hell, I had the same exact mentality, as well as the "don't care if I live or die" attitude. I recommend watching the Director's Cut of this movie, it adds a few scenes that help flesh out Riggs' mentality. Also, I VERY HIGHLY recommend watching this whole series (4 movies). The evolution of the characters is spot on throughout the series, even though some fans may disagree with me. Also, new characters are introduced, who are all important in one way or another. I suggest you watch them and make up your own mind.
Both Riggs and Murtaugh have a journey throughout the 4 movies, and, in my opinion, they progress in a very logical manner. It's one of the best film series ever made. I won't spoil anything for you, but I will note certain things throughout this movie that are important, and "come back later" in future movies. More of a "remember this part.... you'll see a reference to it later" kind of thing. I promise, I won't post spoilers, but do know that these movies connect with one another in many subtle ways.
    One with it.
0:50 - Yes, technically, this IS a Christmas movie. Anyone who says different, come fight me.
3:10 - Yeah, pretty much. His daughter is growing into a beautiful young woman, and he's finding his age coming to bite him in the ass. "Just yesterday", she was a baby being born, NOW look at her. It's something all parents go through.
4:45 - Heh, that's a Three Stooges reference. The "slapping his face, eye poke, slap across multiple faces..." The Three Stooges were an American comedy troupe from the Vuadville days into early theatrical era. You can find some of their "shorts" (20 minute or so "movies" on UA-cam and home video release).
5:15 - This is Riggs showing that he doesn't care if he lives or dies. Goes back to losing his wife, and something I can completely relate to.
6:05 - All I'll say on that is, "You'll find out." (This is why you need to watch the rest of the movie series).
13:28 - "You know why I don't do it? The Job." This *REALLY* hit me hard the first time I watched this movie after my first wife died. I say that, because while we weren't cops, the place we were employed took SO good care of her during her final months. I honestly felt that I "owed" them. Technically, we were "low level" employees, and yet because of her dedication to the company while she was going through chemo, and their taking care of her once she went terminal... it's a long story, but I'll try to keep this short: They made sure that her medical insurance was covered while she was dying. They took donations from other employees (and matched it) to cover the cost of a "Memorial Brick" outside of the Cancer Center where she got her treatments. I was so blown away by this generosity that I committed myself to being the best employee to the company I could be. All the way up until my body started giving out. To this day, I appreciate what they did while she was at home, wasting away to nothing. When I remarried years later, they also contributed a lot of money for me and my second wife's honeymoon. Because they knew that my first wife and I didn't get to actually have one (we were literally married 11 days (officially) before she died).

To be honest, it's about a 7 out of 10 (which isn't bad but not great), but it has some nice plot twists, and it features kenpo karate which is a very interesting style and happens to be the martial art I took up after a knee injury forced me to give up judo. Speaking of martial arts, "Lethal Weapon" was the American general public's introduction to Gracie jiu jitsu (called Brazilian jiu jitsu in the credits)and the much more obscure martial art of jailhouse rock (which is purported to be fighting techniques developed by prison inmates for surviving surprise attacks in confined spaces).

Interesting Fact: Bruce Willis was almost selected to portray Mel Gibson’s role in this movie and Mel Gibson almost starred in Die Hard. They are both considered Christmas movies.

This film was the first time Gracie Brazilian jiujitsu was shown in an American movie. Black-belt Rorion Gracie, son of Grandmaster Helio Gracie and later founder of the UFC, was the fight coordinator and technical advisor for the film and trained Mel Gibson and Gary Busey for the fight scenes.

One of my favourite films and love the rest of the franchise too.
Just noticed for the first time, after having seen this film more times than I can remember, of a big hole in the plot right at the end. Murtagh and Riggs make it back to the house with enough time to set up the tv and write the note. Also, given the sequence of events that has just happened downtown and with all the radio traffic that would have generated. In all that time, the cops posted outside the house weren't ready? Didn't know who they were expecting? Murtagh and Riggs didn't warn them, or inform them of Joshua's description? Hmmmm!

The entire Lethal Weapon series (all four movies) are one of best serial of movies and you can not watch first without seeing entire series.
And surprisingly some moment in this movies can be brutal but is almost you do not see it. Like for example scene on start when Riggs is doing drug bust and guy puts him gun under the chin.
Or scene where they are using electro shocks.
All movies are really great ones, and have strong emotional moments, also some dark ones too (I think second one is most darkest one out of all four movies) but they also have great comedic parts. (like jumper part) and lots of others....
And yes this are Christmas movies...
This series of Lethal Weapon movies and Die Hard movies are my most favorite movies.....
PS Lethal Weapon 4 movie has BEST end credits ever..... and most emotional one too

Watching Dasha take a drink knowing that the "Thin's my middle name."/"You're wife's cooking, I'm not surprised." line was next was so great! I was just waiting for her to spit her drink everywhere, LOL!!! Definitely watch Lethal Weapon 2, 3, and 4. Just wait until Joe Pesci shows up in Lethal Weapon 2. Hilarious!!!

Ah Lethal Weapon, a series that holds strong through 3 movies and has an adequate 4th even.
Also, this movie and Die Hard are some of the reasons why Beretta sold so many Beretta 92 pistols. I know I grew up with these and got one years later just because of 80s movies. 🤣

You're right, size doesn't matter. The large post that Joshua was swinging around takes a lot of space to use, whereas the side-handled baton Riggs had is ideally suited for close-quarters defense. During the time of this movie, the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) outfitted their Patrol Officers with the PR-24 baton. It could be used for climbing, deflection, takedowns, etc. Not too many departments use this these days, preferring to go to an ASP style baton which easily fits on a duty belt.

Great reaction to a great movie. An 80s action classic. Though I must point out that Mel Gibson did not direct Lethal Weapon. Richard Donner directed all four Lethal Weapon movies. Donner also directed Superman (1978), The Omen (1976) and The Goonies (1985.) Definitely worth checking out those films too. They are classics in their own way.

Since you like Mel Gibson I very highly recommend his movie The Patriot. IMO it's his most powerful performance and a very powerful story about America's fight for independence.
