It’s a fine line from Rockabilly to Psychobilly really, in terms of sound anyway, but most would agree it crosses over when the guitar gets heavier and the tempos get faster (so more punk), but psychobilly tends to also focus their overall look and their lyrics on darker themes, like horror and classic monsters (zombies, werewolves and vampires especially), it’s like rockabilly + Halloween = psychobilly, basically, it’s like horror punk meets old Elvis style rock and roll, that’s psychobilly. 😄 Tiger Army walks a fine line, they definitely lean harder into that softer more Rockabilly crooner sound (at least now they do, their first 2 records are really fast and loud, they started slowing things down on record 3, Ghost Tiger Rise), but they always maintained that darker tone and lyrical content, that all psychobilly bands do, so they’re still considered psychobilly. They’re definitely top tier in the genre for sure, so definitely a good pick. Fun fact, Nick was also really good friends with the guys from AFI, and actually sings on a few songs on their older records, ‘Single Second’ being the most obvious one (he sings the chorus). Nekromantix are at the top of that list as well (probably the band that really started that genre honestly, other than Reverend Horton Heat or Stray Cats, which I consider more Rockabilly than psychobilly), Gargoyles over Copenhagen is my favourite from them, so also worth checking out.
Came to say this. These guys are hardly representative of Psychobilly. Personally I'd start this guy with the Cramps, Meteors, Nekromantix or something in that vein
@@foljs5858 I don’t entirely disagree, they haven’t been as psychobilly as of late, so that’s fair. That’s why I said they walk that fine line, whether someone accepts them as psychobilly still (or at all) is really kind of subjective and case by case, and they’d have plenty of room for that argument. Their first 2 records are unquestionably psychobilly though, don’t think anyone would challenge that, then they started focusing on slower softer sounds, more old country kinda vibes, desperado kinda stuff, with a few faster tunes thrown in here and there. But I still consider them psychobilly, personally, because of the darker themes and punk ascetics, and they do still rock a few faster louder songs on every album, but it’s definitely fair to say they’ve trailed off from their roots. I’m definitely biased though, because I like their sound more than any other psychobilly band, they just stand out more, doing their own thing regardless of being shackled to any one genre, and that makes them more interesting for me personally, more variety. I’d agree with your picks, all great examples of the genre. I’d throw in Mad Sin and The Brains as well.

You have to do Reverend Horton Heat next. One of the best live shows I’ve ever been to. You would need to do Big Sky and Baddest of the Bad in the same video.
Great to see some Tiger Army!! Never thought I’d get to see psychobilly reactions from such a legit channel like yours. But as a fan and an upright bass player myself, I absolutely love it!! Tiger Army is a great entry point for the genre! Bands like Tiger Army, Horrorpops, and Nekromantix were my first exposure and led to me falling in love with the genre. Hardcore fans might say that they deviate from the original psychobilly sound that earlier bands had, but I think it’s just a continuation of it. Almost a second wave of sorts. Now that you’ve broken the ice I’d say the next logical step would probably be Nekromantix (amazing upright bass player and builder!), or some earlier Tiger Army. Lots of other great bands too, but it helps to wet your feet a little bit first haha. That’s how it happened for me anyway.

I can’t even play instruments to understand better but damn the the sound gets me and won’t stop
I highly recommend that you checkout their entire catalog from beginning to end. They have come so far. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them live. Truly a great band that really flies below the radar and deserve so much more recognition.
One of my favorite tracks of all time! This reminds me of when he first heard "Drag My Body" by Hot Water Music. I'm a drummer and I'm obsessed with these songs! So cool too see my feelings validated when you see a pro like this hear it for the first time. Like, I think they're sick bass songs, but I don't really know the instrument. Much respect. edit: I didn't fully watch the video before commenting and he mentioned Hot Water Music later in the video!! Wow. Love this channel. Love punk rock!
I'm sure others have already said it, but it's rockabilly (50s) mixed with punk (70s). The first/best example is probably the Clash's cover of Vince Taylor's "Brand New Cadillac" on London Calling. The Stray Cats were around at the same time, but were more rooted in the original Rockabilly sound.
in my opinion when it comes to essentials of psychobilly is Tiger Army, Demented are go, The Hillbilly Moon Explotion, The Brains, Nekromantix, The Creepshow, Koffi Kats and Mad Sin now this is my opinion but i have realised that a lot of people have a lot of different bands they consider essential bands in psychobilly but these are the ones that made me love the genre the most.
I first heard these guys on Tim's Hellcat record compilation in like 99 and didn't even know what psychobilly was but immediately bought their debut! Great band with some interesting variation in styles across and throughout their output. Tiger Army Never Die!!!
This is probably going to fly under the radar but if I were to tell there is a band with gravelly vocals like Hot Water Music, a saxophone section, punky guitar and Psychobilly double bass - all steeped in old school Rock'n'Roll and Rhythm & Blues, I am pretty sure you'll love them. So go check out The Kings of Nuthin I recommend the track Judge Nor Jury as your entry point Enjoy
How do you know a psychobilly fan has been rubbing one off? The Outsiders novel is open on his bed stand. How do you know he got off? The Outsiders VHS is playing on his tv.
Psychobilly is a subset of horror punk. It often uses instrumentation and techniques of 1950s rockabilly and 1980s rockabilly revival with a punk rock attitude and approach often with a campy horror theme.
Love everything you are doing with punk, and now Psychobilly 😊 A couple others that do the upright bass justice would be "Nocturnal" or "Never die". They are more aggressive and showcase triplets/ right-hand techniques
It's so cool that you are digging more into psychobilly!!! I can see that for you is harder to describe the difference, cause Living End gravitates more to punk and other styles and Tiger Army is a bit more of pop-psychobilly. For a bit more true psycho example you can watch some Batmobile - more of an old school 80's psychobilly, or Mad Sin, Nekromantix, Reverend Horton Heath - more modern heavier sound. But still - double bass slaps are the signature sound!
Tiger Army's vocalist did backing vocals on early AFI. On that note, while not a song featuring him, I am once again recommending Narrative of Soul Against Soul by AFI.
Love to hear your opinion on the track flurry rush by days n daze. Libriyum would be a good pick as well. Prior to the album this track is from the bass used live and on recordings was a bucket bass. Thankfully fat Mike convinced them to use a pbass on this album and the way it's EQ'd is perfect to emulate that bucket sound whilst being a 1000x more well rounded and actually audible, also the album and track are full of trumpet, mandolin and banjo. Plus jess-c is a songwriting genius
I first heard Tiger Army in high school in the early aughts from either a Atticus Dragging the Lake compilation CD or a Fat Wreck Chord Sampler CD. I cant remember which exactly but i think it was 1 of the 3 Atticus CD's which Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge of Blink-182 owned and put out at the time. Tiger Army is a great band and I immediately liked them the first time I heard them.
Tiger Army never dies! I’ve been a fan of this band since day one. Great video! Someone other honorable mentions: Mad Sin Horrorpops Three Bad Jacks The Koffin Kats All great psychobilly bands!
The thing with psychobilly, the rhythm that the bass plays is depicted by the slaps. It's pretty much all played staccato, because it's constantly being slapped. There's some phrases that will be pizz, but then it'll go back to slapping.
From a bass perspective, I think there would have been better Tiger Army songs to review than Pain. However, this is such a great song in general. Music From Regions Beyond is an great album
Awesome, good tips also. Maybe you should check Mad Sin next, they are amazing and have also some really cool double bass lines. I would suggest She's so Bad That is Good to start.
Fun fact (since you did an AFI song before)- Davey (AFI singer) does back up vocals on a lot of Tiger Army songs and Adam (AFI drummer) played drums on the first TA album
Best description i have ever heared of psychobilly...... Elvis meets the wolfman . Check out the koffin kats graveyard tree or v8 nightmare are some of my favorites.
Nick 13 has some great solo stuff. All alone and Carry my body down are standouts. It's kind of like folk/country. Really hard to pin down. Has some amazing slide guitar stuff on it too
This is one my all time favorite songs. I wish I didn't relate to it. I feel this way about the band in general, but especially this song, its fucking transporting. They're one of 2 bands that I was introduced to live and immediatelybloved them (I saw them opening for Social D- great bill. The other band where that happened for me was Flogging Molly).
One thing i haven't heard you mention much over these past two songs and, surprisingly, hardly at all in the comments section, is the technique these bassists use. It's nothing new and even predates rockabilly but it's a hard plucking upwards of the string with the fingers so the string smacks against the fingerboard, paired with palm slaps which can be combined in any musical configuration to create the syncopations and such. A great example in the track is in the breakdown interlude where the bass more or less follows the drum break. In psychobilly it has often been the showcase technique. The best psychobilly bassists are incredibly fast and compose very creative rhythmic phrasings with this. The Nekromantix and Reverend Horton Heat have great bassists, but one i like is the one from the Brazilian band Os Catalepticos.
I did mention this at length when I did The Living End recently, but don’t feel qualified to really speak on it as I have no experience with it. It’s certainly a key component in their sound, I agree!

Of note, Tiger Army's vocalist Nick 13 is responsible for backing a lot of AFI's earlier gang vocals.
Also their original bassist was Geoff from AFI. Although he hasn't been in either band for a long time now.
Oh, yeah. He had solo parts in some songs too. Basically what Jade does now, alternating with Davey.
I believe Adam Carson played drums for TA for a bit. They were almost like a brother band to AFI.

A band I think you'll really love which are similar to tiger army with the psycho sound but blending a big band thing too is Kings of Nuthin
saw your living end video just now and thought, "Oh i haven't watched someone react to Tiger Army..." Perfect.
😎
Yeah dude! You finally made it here! Been a long punk rock voyage and now you know brotha, now you know. Walk together rock together!
in my opinion when it comes to essentials of psychobilly is Tiger Army, Demented are go, The Hillbilly Moon Explotion, The Brains, Nekromantix, The Creepshow, Koffi Kats and Mad Sin now this is my opinion but i have realised that a lot of people have a lot of different bands they consider essential bands in psychobilly but these are the ones that made me love the genre the most.
I first heard these guys on Tim's Hellcat record compilation in like 99 and didn't even know what psychobilly was but immediately bought their debut! Great band with some interesting variation in styles across and throughout their output. Tiger Army Never Die!!!
After seeing Tiger Army live, my wife (non musician) now wants to learn to play the standup double bass. They're a fantastic live band.
Tiger Army is one of my all time favorite bands. Amazing discography.
So go check out
The Kings of Nuthin
I recommend the track Judge Nor Jury as your entry point
Enjoy
Oh man yeah I absolutely love Tiger Army one of my favorite bands!! That man has the most beautiful voice!
How do you know a psychobilly fan has been rubbing one off?
The Outsiders novel is open on his bed stand.
How do you know he got off?
The Outsiders VHS is playing on his tv.
I think we need to see you get an upright bass and start down that path!
Psychobilly is a subset of horror punk. It often uses instrumentation and techniques of 1950s rockabilly and 1980s rockabilly revival with a punk rock attitude and approach often with a campy horror theme.
That little smile each time you hear the walking appregio... i do the same thing :) love it and love this band.
It's so good!
you have the best audience!
Great education in this one. Love your take. Love the sidebars.
Love the Tim Armstrong and Jerry Finn reference and appreciation
Yo...been a hot minute since I heard Tiger Army. Flashing back, man.
Love everything you are doing with punk, and now Psychobilly 😊 A couple others that do the upright bass justice would be "Nocturnal" or "Never die". They are more aggressive and showcase triplets/ right-hand techniques
Man they have so many good songs! I wish I could go back and hear Tiger Army for the first time lol
Don’t forget the Stray Cats! Brian Setzer!
Then you’d have to check out the Brian Setzer Orchestra too!
Tiger Army's vocalist did backing vocals on early AFI. On that note, while not a song featuring him, I am once again recommending Narrative of Soul Against Soul by AFI.
Always loved this one from Tiger Army. Very Mike Ness (Social Distortion) like with melody and rhythm.
When this record came out the first thing that popped into my head was "cure-abilly"
TIGER ARMY NEVER DIES!!!!!!!!!!
You should check out the song Never Dies from their first album. Great bass riffs in that song. It’s a classic representation of Psychobilly.
Tiger Army never dies! I’ve been a fan of this band since day one. Great video! Someone other honorable mentions:
Mad Sin
Horrorpops
Three Bad Jacks
The Koffin Kats
All great psychobilly bands!
I've kept very few of my physical cds or cases. But I've got all of my Tiger Army ones.
Another awesome band from Ukiah CA is The Process. I remember skating across town listening to these two bands.
I’ll be back!! This one got me.
That's what I was thinking. There are more bass heavy songs.
Awesome, good tips also.
Maybe you should check Mad Sin next, they are amazing and have also some really cool double bass lines.
I would suggest She's so Bad That is Good to start.
I'm no bass player, but The Power of Moonlight is where I always go when thinking of Tiger Army bass.
Fun fact (since you did an AFI song before)- Davey (AFI singer) does back up vocals on a lot of Tiger Army songs and Adam (AFI drummer) played drums on the first TA album
And Nick13 did tons of backing vocals on early A.F.I
I forgot how awesome the bass is on this whole album!
@@LowEndUniversity totally missed that from that video but I tend to have it on in the background. Color me corrected! Great videos
