  • interesting/well made documentary about the montréal music scene that birthed artists like grimes/mac demarco(featured)
    Original descrription:
    In a Montreal where linguistic identity is a permanent, fundamental issue, a community of talented English-speaking musicians has put down roots, attracted by the city’s cheap rents. This scene has grown into a cultural world unto itself. Warehouses abandoned in the 1990s now buzz with these autonomous but busy new arrivals, who contribute to Quebec’s cultural life even though they remain perpetually on its fringes.
    Timothy George Kelly’s film is an uncompromising exploration of an independent music scene unintegrated with the culture surrounding it. Made with the same DIY ethos that its subjects apply to their music, A City is an Island traces the struggle for expression and the place of the artist amid the contradictions of contemporary society.
    Featuring music from Mac DeMarco, Spencer Krug, Colin Stetson, Sean Nicholas Savage, AIDS Wolf, Patrick Watson, Tim Hecker, Ramzi, Gambletron, Pat Jordache, Braids, Mozart's Sister, Country, Tonstartssbandht, Cadence Weapon and many more...

      POP MTL: still going strong;
      Dishwasher: I feel like I vaguely remember the name being on bills but ddue to garbage SEO, hard to know for sure;

      AIDS Wolf: isn't a thing and hasn't been for a long time;
      Islands: released in 2023;
      Casa del Popolo: still exists, ownership changed (i think?);
      Miracle Fortress: idk;
      Cadence Weapon: has a pretty sizeable career now and tours actively;
      Beaver Sheppard: ran 180g, a peculiar and fun record store/dinner joint combo, still does visual arts and music;
      Tim Hecker: still very prolific;
      Braids: still active, just released an album and toured;
      Blue Hawaii: still active(?) maybe formation change?;
      Mozart's Sister: became CECILE BELIEVE, and released an album recently;
      Tony Ezzy: still active;
      Venues:
      Jailhouse rock: RIP;
      Loonies: RIP;
      Barfly: still a nice dive bar with a tiny stage;
      La Brique: RIP;
      Silver door: changed to drones circa 2014, then cyberia circa 2018, then RIP because of condos;
      Friendship cove: RIP;
      Lab Synthèse: RIP
      aka the gentrification problem they describe was real and indeed DESTROYED the scene and venues/spaces :(
