It would help if they put drive at the top ( for forward ) and reverse at the bottom ( for backwards )

No. Drive is always back. N forward for reverse

Is this a torque converter or useless automated manual box?

Automated manual. I have one. Its actually quite reliable and cheap to operate. And really efficient since there is no torq converter.
