    Great job, Logan. I built an 18" standard Dobsonian over 15 years ago. Ground the mirror by hand. John Dobson himself came to my house and helped do the final figuring of the mirror. He was also kind enough to sign the back of the mirror. Fully upright, the tube assembly stands 9 feet / 2.75 meters tall. It is a heavy beast. Seeing your video has inspired me to take it apart and build a truss tube system instead. That should make taking it out to a decent dark sky site much more manageable.
    Again, great job. Hope you are getting lots of enjoyment from your scope. That is a big accomplishment. My hat's off to you!

      it'll still be heavy - honeycomb sandwich mirrors are really a great idea, combined with a truss design and lightweight components (aluminium, carbon fibre, etc).

    Most impressive thing is how you made primary mirror. The rest seems reasonable, but that mirror though. i wouldn't have the nerves for that. Great job.

    Okay, I am late to the party but wanted to say how impressed I am with this Dobsonian. Simple solid design for a young astronomer.

    what a fantastic effort Logan - I am mightily impressed with your enthusiasm, knowledge and skills, that far belie your age. It's also great to see a younger person becoming involved and interested in science - it's a rare thing these days. Your parents must be very proud of you!

    Nice work there, Logan. I'd agree that the large altitude bearings and the teflon / laminate surface are key to getting smooth motions. Making your own mirror is admirable- hope it exceeds your expectations.

    That's so cool making your own telescope! I like how it looks and nice view of Venus too. Next year I should give it a go and build this myself. Hope this telescope gives you great views of the planets and those deep sky objects. I bet M42 looks nice through this telescope and what about the rings of Saturn or the seven sisters. Very useful video to watch and thanks for sharing!

    Fantastic job, I’m looking to build pvc refractors with kids in school. What would be also fantastic if you could make a video on how make the individual pieces (e.g. frames, mirror housing box with specifications that would inspire more people to build and get involved in astronomy)

    Fantastic work , i mean you are still just a kid , if you made this , soon you will be makeing RC telescopes 1m diameter . But let me ask you as a noob at this , where did you find the grinding machine , or you made that your self as well ?

    Hey mate. Just for interest sake, where can I buy a blank from?
    And whats the biggest size available?
    Also how much did you pay to have that size mirror aluminized and where did you get it done?

      Hi, apologies for the late response! If you google around for telescope mirror blanks you could probably find one either new or used, and your local astronomy club might have some good resources. For me, I got it done for 50 dollars (IIRC), at my local astro club. Cheers!

    Good job..I have a question after making this concave piece of glass. Do you need to finish with a reflective material like nickel? or not ?

    I built something quiet similar. I had problems with balance and had to add weight to the mirror box. Took a lot of time.

      Yes it is certainly hard to balance these sorts of telescopes. I think this one needed a bit of weight. I plan to maybe make this scope a bit lighter in the future. Cheers!

    Very good and impressive job! Can you use the telescope before you have the primary mirror coated? Can you gives an idea of the cost of coating?

      Hi Guy, yes the telescope can be used but not really for deep sky objects as the view is too dim. Cost of coating is usually not toobad if you know someone who can do it for you on the cheap. Cheers

    That's a great mirror, I have a question that where do you coat the mirror? Do you coat it on the bottom side or on the curve? If it's coated on base wouldn't that make it a plane mirror with a lens? And if it's coated on curve then how will it reflect?

      Silvering the flat side makes the mirror behave like a concave mirror with a focal length less than that of what it would have been if the curved side was silvered. You can get it coated so that the top of the coated surface is smooth and highly reflective. Check out Physical Vapour Deposition.

    That has inspired me. Just a question. Silvering of the primary mirror to be done on the polished surface or the other side.

    What adhesive did you use for the secondary mirror? The temperature range here goes from -30f to 100f. Which adhesive is known to handle that kind of range? Anyone?

    Great work!!! I just wanna ask that does the open structure get any disturbance from the surrounding lights? And does the closed tube structure solve this problem?

      For truss scopes you can always wrap fabric around the truss section to block light coming in from the sides.
