This video and your glasses video helped me appreciate why my high school history class made such a big deal out of Galileo making his own lenses. In high school it was like "oh he did his own science experiment. Seeing this I was like "Oh, he wouldn't have been able to make his discoveries without also being very skilled in glass making techniques."

Instead of making an optical telescope like this, you could have had a much easier time making a reflector. Because you don't need lenses at all, just mirrors, which are MUCH easier to make and make sure they're clean and pure on the surface. I highly recommend a Newtonian design, as they are the simplest. (though a Cassegrain or Gregorian could be a nice challenge)
But (glass issues aside) your optical telescope could be improved by making your lenses thinner. Thick lenses don't quite follow the thin lens equations I presume you used to calculate focal lengths.
Focal lengths calculation could also be vastly improved by using a stand/clamp of some sort instead of just holding the lens, which leads to pretty inaccurate results.

    • @htme
      @htme  7 років тому +23

      Good points, thanks!
A reflecting telescope is definitely on my future agenda. The most difficult chemical I need to source for the camera film is likely silver. So if I get access to that later this year, I can also use it to make a mirror and attempt a reflecting telescope.

    • @gowdsake7103

    • @metatechnologist

Further, he doesn't necessarily need to use glass when making a reflector. He might could use a rock with fine grain and coefficient of expansion close to glass. Even then, if he wanted to he could use obsidian i.e. volcanic glass and make a reflector from that.

I made animal hide glue before: ua-cam.com/video/38v7AVTZpMw/v-deo.html
Which was frequently used as a wood glue. I didn't use it for this project though, because I ended up having a tight deadline and didn't want to risk losing a day because my glue didn't hold. I might do a series on making adhesives in the future though, since they'd be a useful supply to have. Making my own duct tape from scratch could be interesting.

First I want to compliment your efforts. Your video's are very interesting and entertaining. The only "negative" (if you can even cal it that) is that to say that these things are made from scratch is a little deceptive. The materials may be the most basic but you have access to tools, equipment, and expertise that more than 99% of Americans do not. You should attempt some of these projects using the most basic tools or even to make the tools and then use those tools to make your other projects. Anyway; well done!

Awesome try. I really am sad about those air bubbles... Ya know, glass doesn't have to be clear to make a mirror! You could try a reflector or more specifically a dobsonian style telescope!

He should try using grass seed heads for dye also. I'd let it ferment for a few weeks. It contains tannic acid and iron oxide

Will you try again to make your own glass? If so you can try to use a ball mill to pulverize the ingredients for glass, as for example, thermite(explosive) doesn't work with coarse aluminum and iron oxide but the finer the ingredient the better it works, same for glass in addition to that pulverising will make other unnecessary particles fall of that are stuck on to ingredients.

If you still want to try making glass from scratch, you might try getting some natural crystals of the minerals you need. (The quartz and calcite, specifically.) Even after you remove the magnetite (the iron mineral you took out), sand almost always contains feldspars, which will keep the glass from being transparent.

Does EVERYBODY except for Matt Cremona have
    a Woodmiser?
Great series. I'm really enjoying this.
(Oh, I've got about 2.5 tons of acacia, to mill,
on a Woodmiser. As soon as it dries out a bit.)
