Broke: 2020 was Patrick's arc to becoming a serial killer.
Woke: 2020 was Patrick's arc to becoming a theatre kid.
But both of those are correct? :p
Implying theatre kid to serial killer pipeline doesn't exist.
Pretty fine line
Becoming a serial killer and a theatre kid at the same time is called becoming a supervillain
@@000Dragon50000 Aren't those just Phantom of the Opera (the musical version)?
I'm sorry but did Patrick really just make a whole fucking musical number for us??? I love this man.
He loves too.
Lazy UA-camrs out here while Patrick putting 110% into each video to teach and entertain us.
Love it
Get your scores and weight up, son!
P.s I feel I should say as a recent sub the reason I found this channel is because I had a random thought about Michael Bay and if he had redeemable qualities (loved The Island and Bad Boys) and have since worked my way through! Personally I think your vids keep getting better and love the humour threaded through them. Thank you.
Above and beyond. This is why I like this channel.
My best friend loves this movie, and she actually kind of likes how inaccurate it is. She says “It’s the exact movie Barnum would have made about himself,” is what she says
@SadieSpells37 That makes a lot of sense actually.
Here's what I don't get about that excuse: isn't the whole message of the movie "love yourself for who you are and treat people who are different from you with respect and as human beings?" And isn't that completely against everything Barnum stood for? Also, if Barnum made a movie about himself, why would he ignore all the businesses he had before creating the museum and circus? To make himself look sympathetic? I just don't think it even works on that level, sorry!
@@MrAspiringactor Barnum was the humbug king and was first and foremost a master showman. Even if he would not believe in the movie's message, as long as the audience ate it up and were entertained, he probably would have been happy. I believe he normally answered to criticism about the fakeness of some of the acts with a shrug and something like "You had fun right? So why complain?"
Though I will say not sure how Barnum would have felt about the Jenny Lind plot since it doesn't exactly paint him in a good light either
I'd like to see the dark, Sweeney Todd style musical that tells some approximation of the real life of PT Barnum
So true.
Patrick calls Zack Efron by his name the whole episode but he called Hugh Jackman PT Barnum. Makes me chuckle.
Because Zach effron isn't playing bailey, just himself
Obviously Zack Efron’a star meter is higher.
@@Zorilla10 We’re calling him Zefron now?
Zac is a wonderful actor though

Wait, what are you doing here?
Chloe's voice works really well for musicals!
She sounds amazing!
well as a trained singer that's basically the perfect fit and I bet she already did some
it's almost as if she were hired specifically for this
@@dwc1964 I was just thinking "wait, was this whole storyline with adding her to the team just a set up for this performance?"
2 things:
1) Charl is a cult
2) the production level of this show is underrated #ILoveYouPat
The delivery on "Oh Jake, you sweet, beautiful boy; This won't be easy at ALL." followed by the sudden cut, after the opening number, damn near killed me.

Yesterday Hbomberguy dropped his Christmas video. Today there's this and a video collaboration from Filmjoy and Folding Ideas. This Christmas season isn't great or even good but it is the most UA-cam Christmas.

Yes, you understand. The Greatest Showman is so, so, so very dumb, and I love it so much.
"Use their abilities like they're the X-men" 😂😂
Underrated joke.
I didn't realise that's what was happening until Patrick pointed it out 😂
Good performers doing good choreography in a brightly colored, energetically designed show will always win people over. Even if the story is weird and the songs don't make sense in context. Great episode!!
Ahh, the often maligned Cats Theorem
@@CurlyTerrell except here it works.
@@CurlyTerrell Yeah cats was horrific and just poorly constructed. This was masterfully crafted and executed even if it ultimately means nothing, its FUN.
@@CurlyTerrell*unless it's Cats
So the reason why the Greatest Showman is beloved is because we wanted to feel things again and get drunk and movie delivered on that? Cool.
For “This Is Me,” I think you’re half right, they definitely don’t deliver after the song, but it’s definitely where it is in the plot for a reason. Prior to that, all their confidence and willingness to be seen by the public is based on PT’s confidence in them. But after he starts treating them badly (not letting them into the party with “normal” people, making them wear their costumes to meet the Queen, making them sit at the back during the opera performance (I think?)), this song exemplifies *their* confidence in themselves, how they don’t need a “normal” person to be their conduit to the public. I think it’s perfectly placed (but yes needed some more followup).
One thing I find interesting about this movie is how it’s the direct inverse of La La Land. I remember walking out of it and a lady in front of me was exclaiming to her husband about how this movie was everything La La Land wasn’t.
The performances in the Greatest Showman were fantastic and the camerawork was... dynamic. But the plot and characters were meh. In La La Land, the performances (dancing, singing and whatnot, the acting was great) were meh the camerawork was less in your face allowing for slow, beautiful shots while the plot and characters were far more interesting.
La La Land pleased critics while the crowd was disappointed. The Greatest Showman confused the critics and the crowd loved it.
One of these days I should get high (off of life) and watch both. I may just unlock the secrets of the movie musical.
The secret is that La La Land was boring as sin my guy. This movie was energetic loud, fun and masterfully crafted.
Uhm...
La La Land made $442 million in cinemas.
The Greatest Showman made $433 millions...
But sure, it was boring as hell and people liked it less than The Greatest Showman.
I absolutely adore La La Land but yeah, The Greatest Showman is definitely more fun and entertaining.
@@TehAtomicPotatomasterfully crafted? Is this satire??
A MUSICAL EPISODE?????? Wow, happy early christmas boys
This could have gone “The Wall” Nostalgia Critic real fast so congrats for actually making it good
The opening bit was funny (but i dont really know if it’s actualy good singing )but The video mostly works becouse it’s talking about The movie and Not doing a weard parody album
@@sebabandfriends3582 agreed, Patrick knows how to format his videos and that the essay always is the core and the theatrics just dance around it
Chloe can really sing!
I'm not even 4 minutes in and already I'm blown away! The amount of hard work and showmanship you put into every video is amazing. And with that said...on with the show!!
When he started singing, I was like "this is the Way".
"The Return of the Jedi of the Greatest Showman Trilogy" how did that feel to say
What did it taste like? Was it crunchy? Did you have to do that take multiple times, because you'd get as far as "of" and have to take a breath just for the sake of comprehension of what this statement was born to be? Do you find yourself strolling alone, even now, and stumble over a crack in the pavement because you accidentally thought about it?
What haunts you, Patrick, what humility or hubris preys upon you the quiet moments? I hope it's statements like these. Merry Christmas you monster.

35 minutes into an analysis of the structure, strengths, and flaws of The Greatest Showman: “You really should not think too hard about it.”
You actually made it a musical. You went and did it, you mad genius.
"This is the inspiring story of a boy who wanted a top hat and how, one day, he got to wear one."
Why must you tease me with the prospect of a Slash biopic?
Charl has deeply unsettled me for a year now, and yet somehow, he (and the channel) remain a highlight of my year
So thanks for bringing that into my life
“Gee, Officer Krupke” is like the best part of West Side Story.
Slavoj Zizek thinks it's a genuis critique of ideology.
Pure ideology.
I have played West Side Story multiple times. You are correct.
"I got a feeling in my gut, I blame this coconut..." - that's some quality rhyme right there, also great musical number.
The "whole thing is a trailer for itself" technique worked really well for Sherlock & for like five seasons of Doctor Who (by which I mean, it made them popular and profitable, mostly among children who never realized the promised climax would never come). And then, it basically completely failed for the DCU.
A Walk Hard reference. This is the greatest video.
Alternate title: The Most Showman
Wow 2020 has been a great year for the growth in variety on this channel. I clicked on this video and said out loud “please tell me this nigga, Patrick, isn’t gonna sing” but I was delighted how much better you are than Hugh Jackman
We had a series of videos with a storyline involving a coconut, a quarantine talk show, an in depth look at Coppola and Kevin Smith, and a musical. Patricks videos always seems to be fresh this whole year.
Wait....are we saying that this nigga Patrick is.. *drum roll*
The Greatest Showman?
Holeee fk. I think we are.
“This movie was a success, and beloved by millions: here’s how I’d fix it.”
Exactly.
Thanks for giving us such fun, interesting, thoughtful, well-crafted content this year. You rock.
This is an actually Greatest video. It shows what I most love about watching videos about movies.
So glad this introduced me to "get away sticks"
Marvellous! Love all the care you all put into these episodes. And now you’ve got me waiting for the three hour “directors cut” of The Greatest Showman...
Loved the interview portion in the middle with Kendra especially - loooove the set dressing 😂
And as always, blown away by how high quality these videos are.
Excellent work, Patrick! The music number was catchy and brought a smile to my face. As usual, your review and thoughts are precise and deep. You're charl and assistant archs are top notch. Keep it up
Love that birds-eye-view shot in the musical number.
Patrick, your videos were a great source of joy and comfort for my husband and I this past year. Your video on LITTLE WOMEN and MAMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN really cemented our rabid fandom (that and Charl...). You & your outstanding crew created something very special this year, and it played a big part in helping make 2020 a bit more bearable for us. We are so excited to see what you have in store for us in 2021.
That intro was stellar, Patrick. You’re so freaking creative.
Always liked the channel, but this year you became one of my favorite content creators. Awesome quality in production, writing and acting (and singing apparently!). Cheers to you and the whole team, can't wait to see what 2021 brings!
Just wanted to say that I love Pat and the whole gang (especially his adorable folks), and this has quickly become my favorite UA-cam channel.

The creativity and effort made in these vids is something that should definitely be admired.
I remeber watching this for this first time and being utterly confused. thanks for putting into words my feelings and ideas
THE QUALITY ON THIS!!! I can't believe I've never heard of this channel before. Immediately subscribing oh my god
So I switched to a different UA-cam account, for a while I didn't have notifications.
Seeing this notification is like a blast of dopamine.
Love this as the season finale. The music is like, actually good, which is the low bar set by youtube musicals. Incredible
I think he said on Twitter that this isn’t the season finale, just the last episode of the year

.....Starkid?
@@tatehildyard5332 Starkid isn’t the “bar,” they’re the gold standard for UA-cam musicals (and since they do all their post-college shows live in front of paying audiences I’d argue they’re not really “UA-cam musicals”).
Imo the films a success because the main leader (Hugh Jackman) is A) clearly having the time of his life and B) doing it really bloody well lol - it’s contagious.
2:11 you know, after learning about certain UA-camrs and even BFN antics, them wanting a polar bear rug is the least insane request Ive heard
Been hyped for this video for a while
Thank you for the Christmas present Patrick!
Your videos have gotten f'ing awesome. Looking forward to more next year.
It’s a testament to how much I like this channel that I’m actually sitting through a musical episode.
Yes, finally, a video of someone talking about this movie! Sure, it's not the best, but the aftermath and impact of it is insane.
You should definitely check Jenny Nicholson's video on it too.
For reasons I can't explain I felt compelled to binged watch this season - Normally I really love the Patrick Explains videos where he is ranting to his parents, but this year the gags about Charl and Matt and Patrick going crazy didn't really hit for me, but I love the commentary so I kept watching.
After watching the full season the past two days I gotta say I love it! Something about watching it back to back made me realize it was a narrative and not just running jokes.
Great job!
Thank you, that's a lovely Christmas present!
This is the best thing I've seen all year
You're the best, I'm stuck at home for quarantine christmas but this makes it a little more bearable :)
Amazing year of videos, one my favorite youtube channels for sure.
I was supposed to work on this movie for only two days. Those two days turned into 10 months and it was as much a spectacle as the movie itself. I like your take on it.
Thank you, Patric and team. You SERIOUSLY helped me get through 2020...
I love the videos man. Merry christmas.
I'm really good at just going along for the ride of a movie, even when sober. And I enjoyed The Greatest Showman, I liked it. Doesn't do all the things, but it's fun!
As for the dual logos, one for the nostalgia, one for the spectacle.
At some point one of those editors really wanted to start the music before picture, but it didn't work over the 60s version. And so, both.
And you didn't even talk about the amazing backdrop they used for that moon/rooftop scene! So cool.
Props to all the effort put into the opening number of this. You are indeed the greatest showman 👏👏👏
I needed this Pat, thank you.
"Sheer concussive dumbness' that's probably the best words to describe this movie.
But still utterly joyous
This has been a bad nightmare year, but your videos have been bright spots through the whole thing. Thank you!
Had anyone else noticed the WOLVERINE Easter Egg when James Mangold’s name appears in the end credits? (The corners are designed to resemble Logan’s claws in an X-formation at 31:41)
the good, the great, the greatest showman; oh man the chuckles also wow how i did not realize that this short as heck movie was 5 different storylines. what a ride it takes us on as does this video. great end to the year patrick and team!
I was today years old when I found out that Dave The Agent is really Patrick's agent.
I liked the description of montage because I kept thinking of it as a video album. Like the scenes just feel like afterthought music videos for one really anthem heavy album.
I've been waiting so long for this video
honestly your videos are so great!
This narrative season has been the best thing I think I've ever seen on UA-cam, and this episode, in particular, was the greatest! (no pun intended... but heavily implied). The song was outstanding, and I think I may have fallen even more in love with Chloe (wow, just...wow). Thank you, Patrick, and everyone, for continually creating the best content around! Merry Christmas to all of you!
I like this movie a lot. I do understand the problems but it came out when I worked at a movie theater and I would go in throughout some of the big numbers just to see people smiling and then they’d leave the theater smiling. I’m incredibly nostalgic for this time in my life now and I was super happy to see this video taking me back today. Thanks Patrick.
It's a weird time to drop a new video. Well... Let's watch it anyway! Can't get enough of my Patrick H Willems videos. Better than any christmas cake or even foie gras!
congrats for the amazing work here !
First Scott The Woz, now Patrick? Christmas is full of musicals.
surprised to hear Patrick’s singing debut wasn’t covering Oasis
Ok, Patrick (H) Willems cover of Wonderwall, make it happen!
Today was gonna be the day

So this movie is like _Bohemian Rhapsody_ with PT Barnum, right?
This movie is even dumber and more inaccurate honestly
Can confirm musical theater kids ate that shit up, they sang a song from the movie at our graduation. I don’t remember which one but I remember them getting very into it and then half of our class (including me) not knowing what was going on at all.
Something funny about the end screen: I made an award in my own channel and Patrick won the the "Best Channel of the Year" category. So the speech at the end made me very happy - I'll take it as gift directly to me!
Congratulations on this year, I've never seen something like these on UA-cam, your cinematography is inspiring, your script work is very solid and the takes, hot or cold, are always reveling.
Happy Holidays, see you guys next year!
The singing in the snow scene, goddamn, that was some good luck and/or planning because the framing with the low sun on the clouds looked spectacular.
Just when I think your videos can’t get more Gonzo wonderful, you outdo yourself.
I am at minute 5 and this is already the best video Patrick has ever made.
Its so weird that they chose PT Barnum to make a musical about considering he was such an awful person
There was actually already a musical about Barnum that was on Broadway
Honestly, it could work if they actually told his story. Barnum was a piece of shit. He worked with gangs, organized bare knuckles boxing, whaled for trophies, and made some the greatest hoaxes of all time. His life is so bat shit crazy, if a faithful adaption of his story wasn’t entertaining, there is something wrong with this world.
Love this video. Love Chloe in the team. Love Kendra James' part. I just love this whole channel. Next year I just wish for feature-length videos.
This might be the greatest video. The Charl content we all needed in These Difficult Times™
When I get a youtube notification, I always try to view on nebula first... but if the video isn't on nebula yet I end up watching on UA-cam which isn't my favorite. I'd rather support nebula and watch it there but I'm too excited to wait!
I just wanna say despite how shit this year has been, I genuinely think this has been your best year of videos! Knowing a new video of yours was coming out every few weeks kept me going all year so thanks for the entertainment!
This movie allows for just enough time to digest one happy, flashy, catchy, audiovisual orgasm of a brain numbing banger then hits you in the feels with another knee slapper........And we love it
I guess now I'm going to hum the melody of starmeter during the christmas dinner
