I’m not even that into post-rock but this song, man... That third part (4:43), I feel my heart sinking into my chest. I don’t know why but this is so, so beautiful
This album contains the most powerful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's one of the few albums for which I think "masterpiece" is an appropriate word to use.
I wish I could spend every instant of my life inside this album. I wish every moment of my life was as emotional, meaningful and powerful as the music in this album.
when i first heard of Godspeed, i went nuts and bought all their records. this track has haunted me ever since. i remember a few years ago when i was on an immensely miserable, incredibly dark, self-destructive path of binge drinking that i would sit in my dark room with this song playing and just cry. completely drunk and alone in the dark, the sample of the man going on about urim and thummim was almost like a glitter of hope for me. sorry for the rant. tl;dr this is a beautiful track!
Godspeed are certainly the most atmospheric band I have ever listened to. When listening to these pieces, ones outlook on day to day objects and scenarios changes (for the better?)
world police is a genuine masterclass in musical progression. 13:00-16:00 is so incredibly unsettling. the slow accelerando, the ascending chord progression, and the phenomenal crescendoing drums all point to a powerful impact. yet 16:02 still manages to give me chills every time, even after that intense buildup. one of the most gorgeous moments i have ever heard in a song. godspeed is so distinct from anything else in the post-rock genre, and i wholeheartedly believe that they made one of the most chilling, emotionally gratifying albums ever created here.
These guys don't create songs, they create pieces. Their first album gave the feel of a post-apocalyptic world, but this one... When Storm begins and the military drums kick in, I imagine a WWII era. When this song begins, and the atomic clock comes in, I start to feel a sense of dread and impending doom. Almost as though this album plays as a prequel to their first.
It really speaks to the quality (and length) of this piece that I've seen over 15 different timestamps of people's favourite parts. Really powerful music, I love the arc it progresses through: like a modern symphony.
From Reedit: I've always interpreted this album as being a metaphor for one's life: "Storm" starts out as a positive and uplifting force; similar to how a child sees the world as vast and imaginative...beautiful and vibrant. Most of all, innocent. However, as "Storm" ends, the tone changes considerably, leaving a sense of disappointment and hopelessness, like how the child grows up and sees the harsh realities of the world. "Static" is the person now as a young adult...turning into a cynical and cold person, who works 9 to 5 everyday, being restrained by society, while being force-fed the cruelties of humanity on a daily basis. "Sleep" is the turning point, when the young adult breaks free of the monotonous tasks and starts to do what he/she truly loves and helps out as many people as he/she can. This could lead to marriage, kids, connecting with others on a mature level...now that the adult sees the good and bad, he/she recaptures the energy lost years ago. "Antennas to Heaven" represents the elder; passing along the lessons learned from his/her life and finally accepts his/her fate and can die knowing their lives had purpose.

Every song is some special and individual masterpiece. That's probably why so many people can relate to it on a personal level. This album always had this hopeful undertone, except this piece. It feels very desperate and hopeless. Depressing. It's really vicious and eats you up. It's truly impressive what these guys show music is able to do to us humans on a mental level.

It must be 15 years since I first heard this album and it still blows my mind. It's just too much to put into words. The creative possibilities of the human brain leave me in awe. A true work of art.
