There was a *big* difference between arcade and home hardware back then, and that was reflected in the quality of the graphics. Of course, computers and computer graphics were moving at a rate of knots back then, so state-of-the-art (and pricey) arcade hardware that was effectively a few years ahead of what home users could afford had a much bigger advantage. Especially when that power allowed you to create new types of games. As far as I'm aware, part of what did for arcades in most Western countries from the mid-90s (i.e. the 3D era) onwards was that the gap started narrowing and arcade games were no longer as big a deal.
1980-1982. Quaaludes, microdots, blotter tabs, shrooms, and many, many bonghits... Some machines, if you did it just right, there was a sweet spot between the coin slot and the coin return, if you smacked it there with a roll of quarters in your fist, or a D battery, it would rack up credits. You had to be sly about it, because it was loud, and if you didn't get it right away, or if you did it too much, it would call attention to you. It worked on some pinball machines too. And once you loaded the machine, you could sell games to people. But if you got busted, they'd unplug the machine and kick you out.
I remember playing this game at a pizza parlor called "Numero Uno" in Anaheim , Ca in 1983. I loved this game much better than the other games out there at the time such as Centipede, Joust, Dig Dug, Ms PacMan, etc, etc, ...too many to remember...but I have always remembered this one game....I hope it still exists in some modern form!
I play this game back in the 80s using an Atari 800 with a painfully slow cassete, and most of the time the load failed!!! A lot od patience in those times.
The Atari 8-bit computers were fantastic, but their tape loading speed was atrociously slow, even by the standards of the time. (Especially for the 48K+ games that came later on.)
ZaXXoN was 3D resurrection of Konami's 2D Scramble dedicated stand alone Arcade game. Gad, can't believe recall all those technical terms. Glad Zaxxon games designers included that high/low flying level indicator on upper left side, otherwise it was easy to mistakenly fly too low into ground target. Dumping another quarter for one credit gave opportunity for continued play on same stage already advanced to, but starting at zero points again. Better idea was continued stage play on Atari's Tempest, which automatically awarded set points. So someone plunking down $10 roll of quarters to work toward advancing to Tempest Invisible or Green stage, would begin play with a big chunk of default points. Similar to someone who actually worked for all those points, by surviving on one quarter. On several popular arcade games back then, anyone taking out every target by end of stages received extra bonus. Recall Zaxxon, Galaxian, Tron, Scramble, Galaga. And that laserdisc ground target bomber game during same era as Dragon's lair, also awarded big for clearing all targets. Toward end of mid 1980's Arcade era, games like Puyah offered miniature headphone jacks, along with volume control available on lower front of cabinet. As Sony Walkmans had been popular back then, so people already had headphone set.
This is one of my favorite space games back in the early '80s. It was a big deal back in the day, I had all those computer gaming magazines. I was waiting on a Zaxxon movie.
This game was released the year I was born. In daycare in the late 80's/early 90's, they had this on a Commodore64, which was already becoming an ancient computer at that time. I used to play this every chance I got. Now at 41, the gameplay looks incredibly frustrating and unrewarding. There's a lot of old console games I was absolutely obsessed with as a child that would be so difficult that they'd be irritating to play. That's a sobering thought.
Some of this is likely due to it being designed first and foremost as an arcade game, i.e. intended to extract money from pockets with short-term gameplay. Arcade games were the dominant force in video game back then in a way they just aren't today (and haven't been for decades). Of course, there's also that video game design has improved *and* that people are less tolerant of overtly "hard" games. Especially when the latter is due to bad or contrived design.
This is my all time favorite game , As a kid II had a record of 21 flags and during the game I reached the maximum points of 999999 and the changed to 000000 .ahhh I would anything to own this game and play it again !
Don't forget to destroy the satellite and dodge all force fields, you didn't score too high. I'll always remember Steve Jurassic, when he scored high in Williams 'Defender.'
SEGA's master hit before Sonic arrived. The time when your about to reach the Boss through the lasers, it's the isometric view what really sends into flames. But we'll able to get through at least one of them.
one of the best 3-d space games I remember...the object was to keep firing as fast as possible see whether your ship cleared the wall while trying rack as many points as possible then donkey kong and super Mario took it over....did I mention the arcade had a flight stick joystick which made it entertaining
I have the apple key plus and had that version of this game, pretty close to me are clean version, I even had a 360° joystick with a buttons right on it that made it easier to play, I would play it for hours

Back then somehow I never questioned brick walls being in space.
This game was a blast to play when I was a kid. Spent hours and tons of quarters on it. Good times
One of the most...dreamlike video games of all time. There was something...weird about this game
Agree...even with the altitude indicator, the depth was always super hard to gauage.
Wow! This is a lot of detail for an 1982 game!
How is it, it is from an Arcade not a ZX Spectrum lol

This game was available on Colecovision way back when. Who remembers that?
One of the first video games with what can be considered an "art style." And very effective it was too, well ahead of it's time.
Cool game...I remember my suite-mates and I in college bought this and a stand up Tron machine from a record store for $400...total!

this was my favorite game as a kid. So glad to see this again
This game was so elite when it was new. Nothing like it before. I thought it was magical.

Numero Uno was yummy deep dish pizza. I remember that place. I even went to the one in Anaheim a few times
2:19 worst bonus ever in a videogame
Thanks for the nostalgia.

0:22 - That sound would be perfect for a game show when someone buzzes in.

Treasured childhood memory

When I was a kid, I told my brother this was how the Challenger exploded.
Wow, I grew up playing this or watching others play. I scored over 329k points back in the day and boy I was happy 11-year-old. :-) Great game!
Cool story bro
@@rosema7909 OK i see a pattern. TROLL away!!!

Why isn't Tommy Jarvis on that high score?
ah.. i remember playing this game as a kid. it surely bring back sweet memories
I use to play this in 1982 in a San Jose grocery store.
I used to buy groceries in a San Jose grocery store :o

I need to play this arcade version. I had the Atari 2600 port as a kid.
NEVER EVER WOULD 2022 GAMES WILL COMPARE TO THESE 80S ARCADE'LS. THEY ARE THE BEST
i remember playing this old school video game a long time ago. the hardest part for me is getting past those beams.
Great game and you play it really well! Ty for the upload mang
Boys club of St. Louis brought me here. I miss the 90s.
I was awful at Zaxxon but the game was groundbreaking in simulated 3D. Awesome game though.👍
Loved this game
I've never played this game but now I want to.
One of the top arcade games of 1982
I used to play this game back in the early 80s and I sucked at it always, my depth perception just couldn’t hang.
I don't know why, but Zaxxon was like *THE* game for me. I sucked at it, but just thought it was amazing.
It had the longest line at the arcade.......Way ahead of its time....Got it for my Atari and it blew chunks.....ET and Night Driver bad.
i had this game on my collico vision when i had it .. i got past it many times
What a trippy game. Remember it from my neighbor
That was awesome!
A glimpse into the future of 3D gaming
You really needed skills back then to play these games. I was too young to get the hang of this one.
ZAXXON! The Arcade Hit From Sega!
Well played, Raul 👍
I actually hung out for hours at a strip joint and played this game and never bothered to look at the strippers lol
#GayForZaxxon
😂
Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
❤️❤️❤️
Roller Skate Rink at the Arcade Vibe.
5th time round, your "Very Good" changed to "Excellent" then 7th go, you got "Never Give Up". Unfortunately not long after that, I did give up....
So, is this were the Saxon hackers team from Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth got it's name from??
Speed racer explosions beauty
Holy shit balls this game was hard
I always struggled with the altitude
I always felt it looked like you were fighting on a mother board or a switch board
I have the apple key plus and had that version of this game, pretty close to me are clean version, I even had a 360° joystick with a buttons right on it that made it easier to play, I would play it for hours
I used to play this at winky’s in Pittsburgh in early 80s
I played this at Dragon's Dungeon, Fullerton Ca. early 80's
Sega Center in West Covina, CA.
I remember the c64 version of this, it saved me so many 20 cent coins.
Love this game
OMG I am having major flashbacks to the 1980's! Get your quarters up!
Me too, my sons and I loved this game!
The combat detection is somewhat better in this game than top notch new ones wtf!!
Congratulations! You get 200 points.
Good !!
Was this the game that taught us that blowing up fuel tanks refuels your spaceship?
I think you have to be a Gen X or Millennial to be watching this... This is AWESOME!
Gen X. I was born in 1972.
Even millennials (those born c. 1982 onwards) would, almost certainly, be too young to have played this when it was still contemporary.
Shoot a plane, 1000 points. Kill the boss, bonus points 200..
Yep makes sense:P
Your an ace!
Spent my retirement savings on this game and i could never master it.
My man Glenn holds the record
Was expecting it to be 69,420 lol!
Dis Zaxxon good
Does this game has an ending, or does it go on forever?
(like many games in those days)
It goes on.
Aways thought this game was awesome.. but was so lousy at it. The perspective was weird
You can destroy Zaxxon if you shoot him three times before he fires at you, but that's tricky to do.
I think you get a lot more points if you blow him up, but it's been a long time since I've done it.
👍🔥
Damn, 30 less points and you could have had 69,420
who or whats suspose to be zaxxon?the pilot of ship?
ericou812 The robot with the guided missile in the Second Asteroid.
Swaniawski Ramp
You're off by 30 points.
Kim Jong Un Simulator
Wtf mijn jeugd ligt hier.
Mother told me, yes she told me
I'd meet girls like you
She also told me stay away
You'll never know what you'll catch
Just the other day I heard
Of a soldier's falling off
Some Indonesian junk
That's going 'round
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender
But don't give yourself away
Father says your mother's right
She's really up on things
Before we married Mommy served
In the WACS in the Philippines
Now I had heard the WACS recruited
Old maids for the war
But Mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender
But don't give yourself away
Whatever happened to all this season's
Losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking
Where'd they disappear?
Then I woke up, Mom and Dad
Are rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling
Got my Kiss records out
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender
But don't give yourself away
Away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away
Surrender, surrender (Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright)
But don't give yourself away

A terrible game. The isometric view (especially in the empty space sequences) never worked for me.
This game is literally the shittiest arcade game of all time. So overrated. And I've played em all.
Loved this game.
