Hey guys - we've just been notified of an error in the video. The base in the third row comes up and allows the third row to slide forward to expand the space (it eliminates the clumsy folded over third row that removes space). We couldn't get the third row to slide on the day, but have now seen it in another vide on the car.
Hi CarExpert. Thanks for this video. Just wondering, can't you raise the driver seat to allow you to see above the steering wheel. That will solve the issue of you not seeing the digital display...
So the cheaper staria competes with the transit and hiace and the expensive one competes with the granvia? I'd rather get the hiace because rear wheel drive proper, and more capable
This is great but it says yeah I am a van but the carnival looks like a van designed by range rover, so I'll probably be having a carnival if I have to
It's a shame the world fell out of love with the mpv, cos they are brilliant devices for moving things and people. Airport services eat your heart out!
Having just spent a week hooning a new Carnival around Tasmania. I too would be going for the Kia. I always bagged out MPVs but the Kia definitely drove well, was well equipped and looks a million times better than this. The Staria gives me weird Futurama vibes. I feel like Bender may have dated a robot that looks like the Staria 😂
It feels a bit too rushed in my opinion. The interior configuration and ergonomics could be so much better, this is pretty much the same as the old iMax in that regard. It feels way to much like a commercial van to be a people mover. I'd rather get a Carnival.
@@CarExpertAus I find that strange, as Hyundai manufacture vehicles for the World market. In the Philippines, there are two Staria models, with the Lounge variant being the top spec model. Are you saying that Australia is only importing the base model, albeit that it's interior features are luxuriously better than some of it's competitors? ...
This would look “out of this world” if someone pimped it out like the Japanese VIP mover. Apart from RoboCop, the Ridley’s Alien theme is what comes to my mind. 🤣
As a parent of many young children I think the passenger view is a fantastic idea especially in a van where with several carseats installed it can be hard to see what the children in the back are doing. I would have loved to see easier access to the rear row (ie seat folding completely out of the way) and the option to slide the rear row forward or backwards to create more space where needed as I think practicality wise with young children those features would have made a big difference. This is one of two options we are looking at purchasing at the moment so thank you for your review, its very helpful to see in so much detail.
The big appeal to me with the Staria not often mentioned is that in addition to AWD it also has a center diff lock (4x4). While it's never going to be a great off roader it could make for a good 4x4 camper with the ability to tackle beaches and tracks AWD's will struggle on.
I don’t like it it looks like a hearse or a funeral car the colours choices are depressing its too quirky outside and inside for my liking. The front bumper is not my cuppa tea. I take the Suv option any day. The van name is crap go back to the I names . Yes the passenger cam is distraction. perhaps the van was meant for the funeral, limo business
I want to buy one. I’ve had an iLoad van for almost 12 years and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever had. I want the AWD but I don’t want the seats, at least not all of them. I’d turn it into a basic camper as I’ve done with my current van. Been waiting for an AWD van and I don’t trust VW. This looks perfect.
You won't be let down with the 2.2 diesel engine and drivetrain. Plenty of high mileage older Santa Fe's with this engine pushing past 400,000km. Shame it has been depowered by 17kw and 10nm over the Santa Fe D4HB diesel.
QUESTION - I wonder if this is the best vehicle to buy for a couple with no children, who want to put a mattress in the back so that you can sleep in it occasionally when making touring trips away??? The rest of the time just want to use as an everyday car. Would have liked it to have been a self parking vehicle, especially as its large. Thanks for your replies
I've just bought one and totally agree with all your comments. I have the V6 and it seems more punchy and less noise. Defs need more speakers to fill the cavernous cabin. I've gone for dark tint due to such large windows lol
One fine day hyundai's head designer goes on a fishing trip and there sees a dolphin ... excited he says what a majestic creature and transforms that to a car 🤓☻
Coming out of ownership of a Mitsubishi Pajero, having a centre armrest was a godsend for driving comfort. Being able to drive with your left elbow resting atop, made long journeys all the more relaxing and enjoyable...Until that is, I went for a test drive. 70K on-roads and the OZ spec misses out on this...yet other markets get fold down armrests. Awesome review as always! I know you’ve done the MG HS in the past, but I’m keen to know whether you can review the MG ZST? Interested in getting one of these but would love your opinion!
The vehicle reminds me of the old Toyota Tarago of the 1990's, but overall it looked unfinished or bland, as if the designers lost interest part-way through. And Paul really gave it a shellacking over quality, design, and execution issues. It seems that the sister brand Kia does these things so much better than Hyundai. I was surprised the second row seat didn't do more than just fold the seat squab onto the cushion, especially given what looked like a mechanism handle on the back of the cushion. I saw a few controls and such that were lifted straight from the Hyundai parts bin, which is as disappointing as only single-zone climate control in the front row. And regarding designing a vehicle to fit the majority of potential customers, Paul, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself over the "short torso, long legs" bit, because over 51% of the population fall into that category. Would I buy one in preference to a Carnival? Absolutely not: poor sound system, instruments I can't see, quality/design issues, and single-zone climate control are all deal-breakers.
@@JohnLee-db9zt I just drove one around Tasmania (about 3000kms) Had four adults plus luggage. It was comfortable and the back seat passengers loved it. Thanks for this excellent review Paul. I was deliberating this over the carnival and bought the staria because of the cabin height. It allows me to put baby in the car seat from within the cabin whilst standing almost upright. You’d have to do this from the outside in the carnival
In Korea, it is different categories between Carnival and Staria. Staria is much similar malfunction van such as Ford E series van. Carnival also used to van however it is a lot luxurious than Staria. You can simply compare the seats each of them ha ha. Anyway good review!
I saw this car earlier this year in traffic. Then I looked it up and it is very disappointing , the reason I say that because I own something very similar but 20 years old , a 4th gen Renault Espace and this (Staria) would not offer me any upgrade coming from Espace. I love the Espace IV, I have the same engine as this thing , same fuel consumption too, plus I can use Espace without the seats in the back. Cool, interesting car, but it should need a much more modern and efficient petrol/petrol hybrid or fully electric powerplant . Espace or any other old MPVs are way better bang for buck.
I'm from Pakistan and considering buying one of these. However, the excessive diesel engine noise inside the car is off-putting. I'm a bit undecided now. Great video, though! You presented all the details very professionally. Keep up the good work!
Carnival hands down. We have one and is the best most versatile car I've had. Being able to remove the middle seat is a big plus, because you can have child seats in the middle row and still access the third row without having to uninstall a child seat. The configuration of the cargo area is better too because you can drop the third row and have a flat storage space.
They should have made the third row, stowable...But...much rather have this (not in Canada..sucks) than Kia Flex aka. carnival..just like the Flex...SuV people don't like it because it isn't really an SUV, and even more, Minivan people (me) don't like Carnival because it isn't really a minivan...Now previous Kia Sedona vs. Stairs...Sedona, as it was the best looking minivan ever, from any brand...that being said, Staria, still first choice of minivan offered at the moment..if Town & country were reliable..the it more sorted out overall. I want a sleeper electric van with 0-60 in 4sec, handling by lotus, 500 mile range.. first company to offer that..I'm instantly a buyer.
Having had both the Kia and this, this beats the Kia hands down. The seats DO move and the view inside for all is far superior. If you surf and have many children its awesome. The fuel economy is great but I had the petrol version. You can park it anywhere. The Media set up is way better than the Kia. Maybe the looks turn off some people because I see a lot more Carnivales around. I know those folks have paid more for a lesser product I guess the salesman are better.
Sorry, but Staria does not compete with Toyota Granvia and VW Multi-whatever. Those vehicles sell in such low numbers they're irrelevant from a competition perspective. Third row can slide back a lot so the interior space can be maximized for comfort to passengers on long trips. Failure failure failure . Bonus is just the outstanding front side and back is horrible
It just came here in Bulgaria and it's strange. Also the name... big no no. "Staria" it's exactly "Old" written in Cyrillic with Latin letters. What a bummer.
It is indeed a nice futuristic car. It looks fantasic but Hyundai... just WHY Why are all the key features only accessible via TOUCH Buttons Like thats literally the worst thing you can do in a car. I mean who even needs to blindly control the temperature or volume when you can have one big glass panel where you have to first read and then touch the appropiate button, which while driving is really difficult to. Safty First in that family car I guess.
Looking on the headlights, this is not the top spec as far as I know since here in Indonesia we have a very different headlights. Nontheless it's still a great looking car tho.
Id buy it if it wasnt for the speedo being hard to see and no flush folding rear seat as i want a van to live in. The sliding windows appeal as i would install a crimsafe screen on its exterior for overnite ventilation. Few vans have sliding windows.
If I was a cabbie I would be buying a fleet of Staria so the Passenger view can be turned on and free adult entertainment watched whilst driving LOLLZZZ only kidding
Rather disappointing. Will take a while to fix the rough edges I guess. Not sure about others but looks a lot like a VW Caddy (or other such vans) to me.
Not so great. As you mentioned the reachability towards the panels and infotainment not very easy. Lacking a lot of other features too such as storage space for rear passengers. All the surfaces are very plasticy... The speedometer not very clearly placed. Overall not so great for the price...
My opinion. From the front to the sides to the rear, it's really an automotive designers nightmare. The interior - the colours of the seats, the door panels and the dashboard don't match at all. It's really a super ugly car. So many ppl commented that it's only good as a hearse.
Seeing this car’s design the Red Fury Turbo Racer from “Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs” comes to mind or Inspector Gadget’s van. I was expecting the Staria sold ouside of Korea to be available only with the Lounge interior and exterior specifications. The Lounge version looks so much better and more premium than this does. Doesn’t seems as refined and practical as I was hoping it would be and that’s a shame because I love the exterior design. The Carnival seems like the more cerebral and much more practical choice and that’s really frustrating because it doesn’t look as good as far as the aesthetics go.
hard decision, don't want to get deseil but it's awd. I have been driven a rental staria - petrol modle... for many days and just love it, planning to get one.
For the Indonesian market we get the top spec 7 seater limo model with 2nd row captain chair with leg rest. But we don't get the adaptive cruise and the 10 inch screen like you have. And also our staria features a copper trim around the exterior rather than the boring chrome or silver. We also get the heated and cooled seat for both the first and second row.
Did the person who thought it was a good idea to hide the front indicators behind the grille suffer from a major head injury? Why deliberately hide an important safety feature?
I thought this was still in its concept design phase. The front end is quite unique. Although, it does seem to blend back into reality once you get to the front doors. I would take the Carnival, this Staria looks like a mini-bus.
I think the passenger view option would be good for taxis maybe? If you could record it, even better. Just my two cents as in Europe we have a lot of minivan taxis.
How on earth is it that a known good seller, the kia carnival, got shafted with the digital dash in the latest model, yet they were able to accommodate one for a new to market people mover here....
So weird that the same engine is used in a lot of their products, and has more power and torque in a lot of their products. Yet they have less power in a heavier car!!! seems weird to me
To see the speedo can’t you lower the steering wheel and/or raise your seat higher? Those rear seats all need to fold flat as well as be removed fully if required.
I’m just happy Hyundai’s van/people mover now doesn’t have the same name as a movie screen and those taillights look like the designers took inspiration from game boy graphics or something.
I find it funny howe car markers are going all out designing these futuristic looking vehicles yet they still have traditional old style light bulbs in them. LED EVERYTHING!

hard decision, don't want to get deseil but it's awd.
I always enjoy the reviews in this channel :)
Thanks mate.
I am sorry and to be frank, it is very bad design from Hyundai🤔.
I prefer KIA Carnival to this car.
Body frame and suspensions are suck
Your passengers will get carsick for sure….
It all same issue on Carnival and palisade and Staria
I'm gonna be honest, Hyundai isn't doing much with new technology and interior design. Kia on the other hand has gotten alot better at everything.
Can anyone please out there bless me with this car to use it for evangelical work around Gauteng province?
How on earth is it that a known good seller, the kia carnival, got shafted with the digital dash in the latest model, yet they were able to accommodate one for a new to market people mover here....
So weird that the same engine is used in a lot of their products, and has more power and torque in a lot of their products. Yet they have less power in a heavier car!!! seems weird to me
What a beautifull van.
Love the alcantara headliner.
Can't wait to see this van in Europe.
I love how you told me it's okay because it looks like a space ship
😅
To see the speedo can’t you lower the steering wheel and/or raise your seat higher?
Those rear seats all need to fold flat as well as be removed fully if required.
Hi Paul, Love the way you do the reviews. Any idea when you'd be able to get your hands on a Volvo V60 Cross Country for review please?
Seems like a ridiculous amount of money for a nothing special people mover......
Yeah ....It's an airport bus ..but looks excellent and should eat the MB opposition.
Designs like this will fade out very fast. No arm rest ??? the interest stops right there and rear windows are turn off.
I’m just happy Hyundai’s van/people mover now doesn’t have the same name as a movie screen and those taillights look like the designers took inspiration from game boy graphics or something.
😅
Some markets got 11 seats but still not practical cargowise cos the 3rd and 4th row seats eat into cargo space.
I want to request if you can review the new 2020 Pajero. I love your videos all the way from Ghana 🇬🇭
Pajero has been axed 😢
Ugly Design 🤮 I believe this vehicle will make Hyundai regret for a long time.
looks dated already. like what the 90s thought the future would be, mixed with the old tarago.
I'd say KIA Carnival is still unbeatable contender in terms of space and practicality, plus it has premium quality interior.
I find it funny howe car markers are going all out designing these futuristic looking vehicles yet they still have traditional old style light bulbs in them. LED EVERYTHING!
Yeah I don’t get the mix of LED and non-LED. Should all just be LED for simplicity.
