When we are talking about boots of this caliber we are of course talking about legendary brands like Nick's Boots, White's Boots, and the like. I really apppreciate your insight at knowing they aren't broken in yet, and knowing how that will affect movement. I want to speak to that, as a former trail worker, who still does dry stone work and sawyer work in boots like these.
    A lot of people online call their boots broken in when they're no longer uncomfortable. But to me, the quality of leather that I value when carrying half my body weight over uneven, slippery, crumbling ground, is that it can adapt to your normal full range of movement, while being stout enough to permit no further movement. BOTH parts of that quality prevent injury. So to me, boots are broken in when I can do yoga in them. When I can accomplish my full range of motion in all directions. BUT NO FURTHER.
    Boots like this, broken in like that, allow you to SPRINT down undeveloped mountainside with ease. You are agile and stable.
    And someone else brought up the weight, and the replies were right. When the boot fits so well it becomes part of your foot, like a leathery callus in the shape of a boot, rather than something you slip inside of and have to pick up and manuver inside of, you stop noticing the weight. Anyone who's carried an old style frame pack has had the same feeling, of the heavier pack feeling lighter when full because of how it manages weight.
    And weight is really a key thing here. Boots like this aren't for everyday walking. Toss on some nice moccasins for that. These are for situations that would hurt your foot, that would be beyond foot health, and into injury, without these boots. HUGE pack weights off trail, loaded with tools and fuel. Kicking things, having chunks of rock and log that weigh more than you drop onto your feet, standing on iron bars for hours, etc.
    No matter what I do, my feet feel the same coming out of boots like this as they did going in.
    By the way, Mike, good old school double sock technique. We used to teach that to all the new field team members.

    *GREETINGS! Hello everyone, JK did send me these boots for free - sorry for not mentioning that in the vid. Luckily, most brands I reach out to now will send me a sample product - otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do these videos even with a sponsor in the video.* That being said - I understand I was amped on JK in the video…I love boot and would recommend these to anyone. To be truly objective I shall now *force* my self to buy Nick’s, White’s, Frank’s, Drew’s and whatever other first name boot company that’s out there.

  • @FunFactOfTheDay
    @FunFactOfTheDay 7 місяців тому +6

    - Another huge reason for those heels is when hiking up an extremely steep hill, your ankles simply will never have the range of motion to flex enough for your heels to touch, so your heels will be off the ground anyways. The heel in that case adds support when most shoes wouldn't be able to supply it.
    - They also dig in deep when going down steep loose dirt, which is wildly helpful.
    - And the smooth leather on the top allows for your pants to slide over the top of the boot, because if it was roughout and you were wearing textured pants, it would catch on the grain due to the increased friction.
    Great video! Always love your video style.

    4 months later... Between you and Rose Anvil, I will inevitably be buying many pairs of boots. And a PNW logger is next, methinks. I tested the waters with a used pair of Red Wing loggers. I was afraid I would not be able to stand the last, with the high arch and all. Well, it turns out that the high arch relieves my plantar faciitis and allows me to work longer in comfort. So I'm all in on a pair of JK OT Redwoods, or Drews or Franks, or even Whites. I don't want to skimp on footwear anymore...

    Like some folks have already said, the logger boots can be a great tool. For me they just didn’t work well. I felt a lot of stiffness in my lower back. I just think they changed my gait. I switched back to a reg work boot (RW2412) and I’m good to go. I understand the supersole Red Wing and a PNW logger are polar opposites, but if you are really going to spend 10-12 hours in a pair of boots they have to work for your body type. Great video.

    The logger heel is pretty useless on hard flat ground but I really like it on soft ground when it digs in. The heel prevents your foot from having its full range of motion so you get a less efficient step. Your legs end up doing more work while your calf does less. I wear zero drop shoes for hiking and am much faster than when wearing my logger heels. The flat sole may feel like it’s putting your foot in a weaker position at first (not in my case) but that’s because you’ve likely not worn a pair of zero drop shoes any time recently. Once your calf muscles adjust they feel completely natural and you’ll have a much stronger stride.

If you stand on the floor and then raise your heels you will notice your posture immediately improves, head back, shoulders back. My back is better now than it was 20 years ago. Some firefighters are 100% on the health and safety train (we have officers for this very thing!) and will not compromise on NFPA. Other firefighters know there is a barrier to entry with NFPA, and trust a well made product when they find it. Some departments will bust your ass for picking and choosing and others won't. I'm also in the 'cool jacket, oh it's a SHIRT' camp. I must admit I've never known how you are supposed to wear an overshirt, you can't wear it like a normal shirt and put a jumper or a jacket over it but if you wear it as a jacket then what do you wear under it? It looks like you can wear them in warm-ish weather instead of a light jacket but you can't layer them. I think. Apart from that, yeah, nice boots.

    I'd only use these strictly for hardwork like logging and forest firefighting (which I don't do). Otherwise I'd hate to wear them everyday. The toughness, stiffness has no agility, no ground feel. I stumble around like a fool in boots like this. No feedback from the ground.

    Nicks has better build quality and customer service in my opinion. Plus they have more and better options for their boots. The Wickett and Craig Double Stuffed leather they're offering is amazing. I'd recommend them over JK any day.

    Pacific Northwest style logging boots are like the final boss of the boot world. Theres a dude ive been watching on youtube for a really long time called Wranglerstar and he used to be a wild land fire fighter for the US forrest service a number of years ago. He talked alot about these boots and their features from using them for years in the field. Its crazy to think that a piece of footwear can be so important that it can save your life. I would point out that he is basically a Libertarian nut case so trigger warning if you seek out his content, he says some wild shit. But anytime hes telling you about a tool or how something works hes a font of knowledge. Another funny thing is now that whilst he was a wild land firefighter he was and still is a big proponent of being barefoot in his off time. Hes a boot boy and a barefoot bro simultaneously lol

    I have a pair of Whites Longliner boots. 10in high, logger boot. They are a bear to break in. But after breaking them in, I can’t go back to a lighter boot like thorogood or red wings. These PNW boots are tanks. There is no way to describe the feeling of support on my feet while wearing them. I will always recommend any PNW boots to anyone. Yes the are expensive but worth every penny. Just make sure you do research and go through every step of the foot measurement process. I learned that I need an extra wide boot.

    You seem to think or imply that "weak feet" is a no biggie because "what do you need strong feet for right?". It's actually extremely bad because your arch gets weakened and you start to overpronate which in turn messes up your whole leg and your feet and knees stop pointing straight. You can imagine all the problems that creates after a while. It also encourages heel striking which will eventually ruin your knees and back.
    Also almost everyone that wears supportive footwear and doesn't train barefoot will have weak ankles, which will twist and sprain very easily. So many people suffer from this. This insane amount of arch support is bad for most people, workers or not. Firefighters and other workers usually use standard issue boots not hyper expensive stuff like this anyway.
    In conclusion, if you HAVE TO mess with millions of years of evolution that lead to the creation of the human foot, be VERY careful with it.

    Hey Iron Snail... clearly you have zero experience with PNW logger boots. Clearly you have been paid off by JK boots. And the boots they sent you will end up in the closet. How about talking about products you have a few months wear and knowledge about. Any PNW logger boot where both the stitches go through the sole and there is no slip sole is useless as the stitches wear out after a few hours of wear and the upper to the midsole attachment is left open to failure. Do your homework before we mislead your UA-cam audience.

    • @KimballPrecisionRifles
      @KimballPrecisionRifles 7 місяців тому +1

      Yes, this is clearly an ad. He can make whatever videos he wants…and you’re wrong about the stitching. The sole has two rows of stitching, but it’s not just stitching. It’s a lock stitch. Even when the outer thread is worn, there is a knot inside of stitch, keeping it from coming apart. You think they’d make boots like this if the sole or lower just falls off after a few hours…lol. Most PNW boots are made like this, and for a reason.

      Echoing KimballLeather for the sole discussion
      JK sent me these for free which I figured was pretty clear but I’m thankfully in the lucky spot where most brands I reach out to will send me a sample product for review or now some cool brands will email me without me asking first. When starting the channel I’d save up all the money I could, spend it on the next video, sell the item, and buy the next. Now, thankfully I don’t always have to do that!
      These brands don’t script, say what I can and can’t say, etc.
      These are my first PNW boots and I was pretty amped to have received them + they are built like tanks. I like them and really would recommend them to anyone.
      If there is anything I missed that was huge just let me know and I’ll pin a comment, make an additional video, etc.

    I own 3 Nicks and 1 Franks, I don’t own Jk just simply because of a personal bias against the brand. All the PNW boot makers in Spokane make quality boots. I can indeed vouch that these boots did change my life, as I had crippling lower back issues that completely disappeared 3 years ago when I bought two Nicks boots after seeing Rose Anvil and Carl Murawski’s videos on them. I’m an artist and fabricator who works on his feet 10 to 16 hours a day, and these boots are the best tools I’ve ever bought for my trade.
