  • Deep in the mountains on the western coastline of Norway, legend has it that trolls roam the Trollstigen by night turning to stone if hit by sunlight. I’d experienced this climb once before, on a dark wintry day, continually watching my back with senses on high alert for every unknown rustle at the side of the road.
    Today was a different story, the early cloud burning through to reveal the road in all its splendour. I’ve been fortunate enough to ride many mountains over the years but there were moments during this climb that took me to a completely different world, where the tiniest touch of water on your skin makes you feel so alive, reminding you how the power of nature and the great outdoors is the answer to every question. I still get that same feeling when I watch these moments, I hope you do too, and one day you can experience the pure beauty of the Stigfossen waterfall and Trollstigen as I was lucky enough to do so.
    Start: Sogge
    Length: 19km
    Summit: 852m
    Elevation gain: 802m
    Average gradient: 4.4%
    Max gradient: 10%
    Ridden in June

    absolutely stunning! it's hard to imagine that the top of the climb is not even at 1000m high: it feels like you are riding at more than 2000m!

      Nathan Muller for sure, feels a lot higher than you think. The scenery is just out of this world!

      @MetallicaSindre 7 років тому +1

      Nathan Muller, that's one of the differences between Norwegian climbs and other climbs. Most of our longest and "tallest" climbs starts at sea level, most likely near a fjord 😊

      In the Alps you have trees and forest up to 2000 m or more. In Scandinavia you only have trees up to 1000 m - in some parts even less - I guess in this part of Norway the limit is around 700 m. Also the limits for real alpine terrain with glaciers etc. is much lower than in the Alps, so in that sense it feels much higher.

      Seems higher than it really is? I guess the mountain really... Trolled you! Hehehehe.

    Hey Mike...great stuff from you and the crew...very inspiring...on a bit of a journey myself...December 2015 I weighed 285lbs...now at 220lbs with final target at 180lbs...avg about 150 miles a week over past year and ramping up to 250 this summer with target to start racing at age 50 next spring once I have hit my target weight...gotta come to California and do some epic climbs like onion valley

    I rode this yesterday based on this video of yours! Thank you and your team for putting it together! There was a bit less snow, and the amount of tourist traffic was fairly heavy, but that didn't detract from the spectacular beauty one single bit. Next time, I'll start at the bottom and ride up, instead of descending first, then turning around and heading back up. Again, thanks for this inspirational ride!

    @ 5:18 it is mentioned, that you see the Troll Wall up to the left. This is not correct. You can't see the Troll Wall from the Trollstigen road. The Troll Wall faces east towards the next valley Romsdalen. What you see up to the left @ 5:18 is the western side of the ridge, where the Troll Wall is on the other side. Apart from that a beautiful video as always.

    Lovely video! I live in Norway and Trollstigen is still on my "to ride bucket list." Hence I wanted to know which time of the year and time of the day you took it on? Cause I saw surprisingly little cars/motorbikes/camper vans blocking the street when you where cycling up there and I know that can be a challenge in summer. would you mind shading some light on that? Thanks and keep up the fantastic videos!

    Hi mike, do you feel the difference in using the semicompact (36) rather than the 34 at the front? In many videos you used the second one to climb easilly, as you say!
    :)

    • @MikeCotty
      @MikeCotty 7 років тому +3

      roberto paludi Hi Roberto. I use the 34 more than the 36 as I'm never 100% sure where I'll be riding next so always like the extra gear. On a climb like Trollstigen (which isn't super long or steep) for me the 36 was great. If I'm doing a big week in the high mountains I prefer the 34. Ride safe!
