Joe beat Lacy up, and took his heart. Lacy had the tools to be an all time great, but they made the mistake of putting him in there with Calzaghe!

This fight ended Lacy.
I remember this fight clearly, lacy was my favorite and was regarded as the next best guy, then calzaghe completely ruined his career.
Drives me nuts when Americans say you've not done anything until you've done it in America. That's true for most divisions but Europeans have been dominant in Super-Middleweights for about 20 years. Ok, they might not get the big paydays but most of the toughest fights / best fighters are here in Europe. People say Joe should have fought one of the big Americans earlier... Well Roy Jones should have fought some of the British fighters, like Eubank, Benn or Watson. His record has big gaping holes
Actually, it was Lacy who wanted Calzaghe. Lacy was knocking out guys left and right, he was the one demanding this fight, after every KO win, Lacy would scream to the cameras "you're next Joe, you're next"....Calzaghe didn't need Lacy to establish himself, it was Lacy who campaigned for the ass whoopin', Calzaghe made sure he was elected.
I love how fighters call Calzaghe a "slapper", when they get in that ring with him they quickly realize he's NOT a slapper at all, he packs power, he KO'd 32 of his 46 opponents, that's a damn good KO percentage for a "slapper".
He got good solid punches but he's no knockout artist, he's a high pace accurate fighter who never gets tired, he's no slapper but he's no power puncher.

Calzaghe what can you say about him if you watch all his fights,If you can slap your way to 46.0,name one other boxer that has slapped his way to 2 world titles undefeated,This was an exibition of a one man relentless attack on a man regarded as a little Mike Tyson Im sorry but thats an insult to the Legend, Im english didnt like Calzaghe but watched a few fights,and had to admire his style no-one fights like him TOTALLY UNIQUE

Watch jeff lacy vs roy jones around 20 minutes in. He's a decent shoeshine puncher but a 39 year old roy jones has faster hands then he did in his prime, i'm not being biased here, just realistic.
wow dude that is a serious hardcore fan to name his YT account as that of a fighter. I respect that but you also need to respect that anybody who gets in the ring in front of thousands of people and pute his pride on the line (and health) deserves respect irrelevant of how carefully they been manged.

This was a serious beatdown. Lacy never the same. His confidence before the fight was admirable and scary. But Jo was electric, and deservedly so, went went on to greatness. Barry McGuigan was spot on also ;) Spitfire intro. Thought Groves came up with that lol
hi mohamud . i say jones in his prime yes there is an arguement for jones haveing the faster 1-2 punch hand speed but i think calzaghe put faster longer combo's in and did them more regularly
They really hadn't done their homework on Joe...Lacys manager admitted as much after the fight....Poor Lacy never fully recovered from this defeat.

lacy said this is the beginning for me .... but it turned out to be the end for him. It destroyed it all for him. Fired his management, his trainer, and his girlfriend after this fight and went into spiraling depression for 6 months.
WTF are you talking about. I love Joe and yes I am 100% WESTERN or yank or whatever you call us here. His style is different bc it is him. Thats why you can never immitate no one. Bc theyre not you, in all of us there exist a tune God gave us and we have to figure out what it is. No one ever became great by immitating. BTW he is very much liked in this side of the water too.

jeff lacy was out of his league and the promoter who got this fight should been put against the wall and shot jeff lacy wasn't even in the league of joe calazghe and you could see through the fight joe held back because he didn't went to hurt lacy.
I agree this should have been a TKO round 4, or any time thereafter. I disagree that Joe held back; it looked at some points he really did want to knock Lacy out. To his credit Lacy is tough and he didn't get KO'd, although the fight should have been stopped. The trouble is the fight ruined Lacy psychologically because he had a bunch of ignorant pussies in his corner who picked bums for him to fight and made him feel invincible. When he came up against the real deal like Calzaghe, GAME OVER.
