@@lightandleaves3858 nah I don’t buy the twice death bit at all. Dabi isn’t emotionally invested in the League. He isn’t even emotionally invested in his siblings or his mother. The only thing driving him is How To Get At Endeavor.
He filmed Twice’s death to bury Hawks’ reputation and by proxy add ammo to his Endeavor smear campaign. That smile? That was glee.

@@blacknoise He can be though. He acts like he doesn't care, yet he does small acts of kindness around him (I won't spoil which one is at the forefront of my mind). Even Toga says he's kind. Doesn't mean he LOVES the LOV, just that he's not completely indifferent. He's an unreliable narrator. They're not his main concern, that doesn't mean he feels nothing for them.
That smile could have been glee AND pain. You can feel multiple conflicting emotions at the same time.
He cares a bit too much about his family, but his vision is blinded by his rage against Endeavour. You could argue that he wants his dad to die because 'then everything will be fine' and in that sense it's also for his family. Removing the 'problem' that broke them all apart. He witnessed all the abuse and that's when his mind broke as well. We can't know for sure what he's thinking or feeling, but there are hints of it in the way he says his siblings' names, how he says 'Mom' and not 'Mother' or 'Rei Todoroki' and how he cries blood thinking about them.

Yeah, this was called “The wrong way to put out a fire” for a reason. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the main one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize it, it’s all just too little too late.

  • @Awesomefacecraft

I love how the Todoroki family is handled in this series
I love how Hirokoshi handles the Todoroki drama. It was an extremely difficult situation, and unlike some anime where everyone makes the absolute right decision all the time and it’s just like “whoopsie wasn’t my fault”, no one knows exactly what to do. Endeavor lit the fire under Toya to surpass AllMight before he started burning himself. After that he desperately started having more and more children, hoping to have one good enough to stop Toya from wanting to be a hero, because he doesn’t know what to do. Rei grows tired and resentful of the eyes of resentment given by Toya and Endeavor, where Endeavor doesn’t know where to turn to to let his frustration and helplessness out, so he turns it on Rei. He has to keep Shoto away from Toya to keep him safe from him and desperately tries to raise him to be a hero good enough to make his son quit, because he doesn’t know what to say otherwise. It wasn’t how he should have extinguish the flames of ambition he lit under Toya, it was the “wrong way to put out a fire.”
Also while it was mostly Endeavor’s fault for failing his son and his family, everyone takes a little piece of the blame to help ease the burden on the only one who can stop him.
Fuyumi pretends not to see the cracks forming in the family, and puts up a front of pretending everything is happy and alright to try and delude herself into thinking it is. Understandable for a child to want to ignore the problems of life.
Rei, who felt helpless and didn’t know what to do, could have refused Endeavor at any time. Right at the beginning she could have refused the arranged marriage, and could have stopped having kids and try and find a different solution for Toya’s problems. But like Endeavor she didn’t know what to do, and went along with him because of her unknowing what to do. Again, completely understandable, she might have felt she owed her family and went with Enji to help her family’s money, and didn’t know what to do but still festered resentment towards the eyes of her the source of her despair and fear, the eyes of Endeavor.
And finally Natsu. Natsu fully states that it was mostly Endeavor’s fault, which is true, but that he could have done more to help Toya. He was tired of Toya complaining to him and rather than try and help him he ignored his gripes and ignored his cries for help. It’s understandable that as a child he shouldn’t have the responsibility of having to deal with a complex issue like that and it was completely understandable to get tired of it and ignore it, but that wouldn’t stop an adult him from feeling the guilt of not doing anything.
In thr end, it was both nobody’s fault and everybody’s fault. Even though it was out of their hands, no one handeled it perfectly, like how an actual family in that situation wouldn’t have handled it perfectly either. Even though it was understandable that they couldn’t do something, it doesn’t stop them from feeling some sense of guilt for not trying harder. It’s like survivor’s guilt, it’s not your fault you couldn’t help everyone survive but you still wonder why you were spared and feel guilty that the others weren’t. They all feel guilty, and that’s exactly how a real family would feel in this situation.
Oh and Hawks and Best Jeanist were there. Kind of a weird for them to just butt into a family affair like that, should have left once they heard they were having a family thing. But I guess that’s realistic too, everyone LOVES drama.

I love how characters in MHA are so grounded in reality for the most part. Other anime have characters who’s entire village is murdered, but I can never truly feel for them. Whereas seeing people with realistic problems like a father pushing his ambitions onto his kids and a son trying to impress and be acknowledged by his dad makes me feel so much stronger.
People also don’t realize how dark MHA actually is because it isn’t as violent or bloody. Characters like Shigaraki, Endeavor, Dabi, and Toga really show you how dark the series is and how messed up society is.

So we finally got a Todoroki age gap confirmation. When Shouto's 5, Fuyumi was 12, Natsuo was 8, and Touya was 13.
    Birthdays
    Touya - Jan 18
Fuyumi - Dec 6 (same year as Touya, 11 months younger)
Natsuo - July 1 (3.5 years younger than Fuyumi) - Touya was only 4 when Natsuo was born
Shouto - Jan 11 (born a week before Touya's 9th birthday) - Touya would have been 9 when he attacked baby Shouto. Meaning that Fuyumi was 8, Natsuo was 4.
So during the flashback of little Touya and Fuyumi, Touya was 3 years old. He was 3 when his hair started turning white and Enji shut him out. His entire life has been focused on beating All Might and making his dad proud of him, and now all of that was gone. And he didn't understand.
Touya was 13, maybe 14, when he burned on Sekoto peak. Touya is now 24. He's been missing, presumed dead for over a decade.

Honestly, when this stuff was happening in the manga, there were some really yikes takes from people. People saying that Touya didn't have it so bad because Endeavor never abused him. Like, news flash, neglect is a form of abuse. Not just neglect, emotional trauma. It felt like people were trying to shift all of the blame away from Endeavor and onto the victim, Touya. Because there are so many ways Endeavor could've handled this differently.
First, you should never try to live out your failures in life through your children. Side note, Endeavor seeking out Rei to create a powerful weapon is so yikes. It's not an act of love. It's an act of seeking power. Moving on though, once he found out Touya's quirk harmed his body when he went overboard, there are several things he could've done.
    A. Tell Touya that he'll love him regardless on if he can surpass All Might and that he loves him for who he is as a person and not his quirk
    B. Tell him that he can still be a great hero, just not the Number 1. And that he's fine with it because Touya tried his best
    C. Tell Touya that he can still be the Number One hero but only if he finds a way to stop or minimize the damage done to himself(like how the Nurse at UA told Izuku to find less self-destructive ways to use his power)
    D. Actually talk to Touya and stop expecting the problem to just go away, especially since he created it
If all of that fails and he still decides to have more children, there's always one final option(hypothetical if Endeavor had treated Touya somewhat better)
    E. Stop training Shoto and Touya separately. Some heroes become partners to cover each other's weaknesses. He could show them both love and have Shoto cool off Touya when he begins to overheat and have Touya go for more powerful fire blasts that Shoto can't do. Raise them as sibling heroes
But he didn't do that. He instead ignored most of his family. When he wasn't ignoring them, he was harshly training Shoto or yelling or hitting Rei. Touya saw that he was born and tossed aside for his father's ambition. He revealed that he'd been watching his family after he burned up too. And he likely saw that Endeavor didn't change even after his "death". Endeavor got worse. He was replaced in life. And his death didn't change anything. He probably questioned why he was born at all. Until there was nothing inside him but emptiness and hatred. This was the wrong way to put out a fire. And that's how Dabi was born.

I also think the fact that hero society places so much importance in Quirks is also part of the reason this happened: Toya could have trained to be a capable hero without depending on his Quirk as the only weapon in his wheelhouse. Endeavor also could have provided him with support items to help with body temp regulation, the same way Aoyama uses his belt to help with his Laser quirk. There were a lot of solutions here- maybe they wouldn't have brought us to the ideal that Endeavor had (raising a kid to surpass All Might), but let's be honest, that ideal sucks balls and shouldn't have been Endeavor's goal in the first place.

Elecplant and Cow Lady join the first responders, but allow the villains to get away after a short skirmish. They watch from the sidelines as All Might wins the day, and they learn about him from David Shield, then on World Heroes' Mission together with Hawks, Tokoyami and Godzillo on the U.S.
Since during the flashback All Might must've been on his early 20s, that would put him on his 60-70s age wise since AM is around 55-56 currently.

Quirk: Papyrus, his quirk allows him to turn his body paper-thin, allowing him to slip through narrow spaces and ride the wind, making him very fast.

From what I understand, most equipment for fire users are flame retardant to a certain extent but the problem is that, as All Might had said, if you rely on your equipment too much the moment they are taken from you or destroyed, you are at a severe disadvantage. And at the same time, Toya's body needs to tolerate the fire power he puts out or else he might not be able to tackle Endeavor/All Might level villains; if he's held back due to equipment and such, he won't be good enough.
This similar situation happened with Shoto in season 1, his suit had a built in heater to help midigate the ice he made so that he didn't have to rely on his father fire but after the sports festival, Shoto had to acknowledge that his fire power was more useful than relying on the heater.

I remember reading this part of the Manga almost 2 years ago.
I just couldn't believe what I was reading, this whole backstory is so complex with so many layers and prospectives.
The anime did a fantastic job portraying it, I couldn't be happier with this episode.
Here are my thoughts on Endeavor.
Endeavor is such a mess, it's incredible how he's portrayed.
At a basic level he has the positive emotions of "caring" for his children's well being.
The major problem in his life tho is that every time an issue arises his solutions are always wild.
    For example :
    "I can't surpass All Might?
Guess I have to buy a wife to produce a super baby!".
"My son's quirk is harming him? Guess he will be forced to never use it ever again, for his whole life".
    "Touya tried to harm Shoto?
Guess I'll keep Shoto isolated from all his siblings".
    "My wife harmed my son?
Time to put her in a mental hospital for ten years".
    "Natsu won't accept me?
I'll buy him a new house so he doesn't need to see me ever again".
    "Dabi is Touya?
Guess I'll just wallow in my own despair and do nothing to solve the situation".
Every time he runs away instead of confronting the issues directly or just takes the most extreme approaches possible.
He literally thought that by making more kids Touya will forget to become better than All Might on his own.
    Who thinks like that?!
And because he doesn't know how to convince Touya by talking to him he just hopes he will forget all by himself and when it eventually fails he just lashes out at Rei.
He tried talking to Touya, but it was too little to late (plus when Touya attacks baby Shoto it's heavily implayed that Endeavor had to knock Touya out to protect Shoto, judging by his burned sleeve in the next scene, which was definitely the moment when a line was crossed between the two).
When Touya "died" he felt that the only way to not be crushed by the guilt of everything he has done was to fulfill his dream anyway by making Shoto the ultimate hero, so at least it wasn't all for nothing, instead of learning from his past experiences he just marches forward trying to fulfill his goal without looking back.
    "Endeavor the hero is dead.
I can't fight my own son".
Even if it is more understandable this time, he was still going to run away instead of taking responsibility for his actions.
This is why it was so important for Rei and Shoto to confront him.
They needed to tell him that, even tho the whole family minus Shoto could have done something to help Toya, he is the cause of all of this and thus he can't run away this time, he needs to get up and face his mistakes head on.
I can't believe this is in a Manga.
This isn't fiction anymore guys, this is just real world writing we are experiencing.

To be fair on the Natsuo part, if Natsuo is completely intolerant to Enji’s presence and attempts at being a better father, to continue to force his presence on Natsuo is wrong. He cares about how his family feels about him and to respect Natsuo’s feelings of not wanting anything to do with Enji, Enji will do what it takes to do that. And remember, the house isn’t only for Natsuo. Enji also fears that bringing Rei back into a house where he is after she burned Shoto for reminding her of Enji after all his abuse isn’t good for her. That’s reasonable. Victims should absolutely have the right to not interact with their abuser if they don’t want to and Enji knows, understands and respects that. He can reach out all he wants but none of them have any obligation to accept him back into their life.

@@pj_spirit thanks for the comment, I hoped someone would bring me some challenging arguments👍
I'll give my best to try and explain more clearly my stance on this one decision Enji made.
Enji definitely meant to respect Natsu's wishes by suggesting that and didn't want to impose.
He definitely already had a huge amount of character growth by that point and had come to realize just how much he hurt his family and that usually nobody that does stuff like that could ever hope for forgiveness.
My point is tho that by isolating himself from Natsu he was also harming any chances of ever having a better relationship with him.
How can you expect anything to change if you're not around to show that you care.
That was his mistake with Touya.
It was easier to say "I suck, so I'm gonna leave you alone" and justify it as the right thing to do because it was respecting Natsu's wishes, even tho there were other options, like Idk facing your mistakes and maybe show Natsu slowly how much you regret what you've done.
I hope I made my point more clear.
Honestly I had forgotten that it was also for Rei so thank you for reminding me, that is definitely something that needed to be managed more slowly and by a distance at least so I don't have anything to reprimand Endeavor there.
The meeting at the hospital could only work because she asked for it, Enji knew not to rush things there.
My overall point was that Enji's actions follow an internal (at times very strange but consistent) logic.
Man, it's crazy how many angles his relationships take.

@@silveratlas2706 I understand where you are coming from with the Natsuo thing, but you are just completely wrong when you say that an abuser constantly being around one of their victims will show that said abuser is repenting their actions, imo. Natsuo even said that every time he looks at endeavor he remembers the abuse. It would be cruel of endeavor to force Natsuo to be in his presence even after knowing how much it affects him. Victims don’t need to interact with their abusers unless they themselves want to, period. If anything, it’s better for Natsuo to be given the chance to interact with endeavor out of his own free will instead of just being forced to do it because of their living situation.

This is an incredibly complex episode with lots of nuanced emotions. I was CONSIDERING going through this whole thing point by point and cover the in depth nuance, but it got SO long even I realized, “No one will read this.” And I scrapped it. XD there goes an hour of writing. So I’ll just say the bare bones.
This STARTED as a quirk marriage, this STARTED as a passion project to surpass All-Might. But became a large scale effort to prevent the golden child Touya Todoroki from endlessly pursuing a route in life that would most certainly lead to his own death. Each effort got blunter and blunter making another nail in his coffin instead of a deterrent and accidentally creating a sociopathic murderer hell bent on destroying what is now a somehow more functional family now than ever before. Rei hated Endeavor, but has come to realize she never took it on herself to understand him. (And won’t give him leeway.) Her mere presence from a situation she DID have the power to walk away from and take the kids with her is the sign that she DOES still love Endeavor. And I see that flower she brings in as a “Let’s start over.” Not for the kids, but for her and Enji.
Endeavor has INCREDIBLY weak empathy making NONE of his methods work correctly because he didn’t use them with enough care. Even though each choice DOES actually have logic behind it. The ONLY thing that you can tell how much he empathized with was the absolute terror of Touya’s quirk recoil. He knew EXACTLY how much it hurt him because he considers his OWN recoil the exact reason he’s not Number 1. And as All-Might got better, it showed the gap for Endeavor, but also how hard Touya was pushing himself. He was struggling in vein to stop this, but didn’t have the emotional capability to do it. He also has among the WORST emotional traits. The trait of showing sorrow and fear as anger. He is DESPERATE to not show vulnerability. And I think that is EXACTLY why Rei knows he IS trying. Because it’s a mask. And he can’t maintain it forever. This crash is years too late for the kids to see. But considering what kind of man Endeavor is, it also shouldn’t be surprising it took til THIS happened.
There isn’t a single family member that doesn’t feel guilt of the events. But there also isn’t a single one that doesn’t desperately want to fix things. Natsuo is the MOST resentful of his dad, but even that doesn’t spell to me he will cut him off once Touya is stopped.
The chances of Touya Todoroki having the ultimate irony of being ANOTHER half cold-half hot wielder is TERRIFYINGLY high he could have grown to in his adulthood. I have been curious about how he cried when he got excited. And that may have been melted ice for all we know. His hair STRAIGHT UP matches Shoto for a year or so. Natsuo lost his red hair, and Fuyumi stayed the same. Touya’s went through a LARGE transition. And while Shoto’s hair has no connection to his quirk, (DNA is not constrained to one side of your body. If he has both, it doesn’t mean it HAS to stay on one side.) that doesn’t mean that it’s exactly the same for the other siblings. But it would be the ULTIMATE irony and nothing would hurt the Todoroki’s more that he ACTUALLY transforms his quirk more. (This is an unproven theory, but I do VERY much so believe in it.)
But if there’s one thing above all I love, it is the mere MENTION of the term One For All blows the lid of more than a CENTURY of hiding from AFO, the government, the public, and all other villains. The MOMENT Shigaraki says where is OFA, Endeavor asked what it was. And Deku IMMEDIATELY ran from the evacuation site and Shigaraki went after him INSTANTLY. It wasn’t the extra quirks that gave him away, it wasn’t Bakugo revealing anything, it wasn’t Deku being registered quirkless in elementary school and middle school. It was JUST the fact that AFO found out Izuku Midoriya was the 9th wielder ALL THE WAY back in season 3. He used Search and shouted at All-Might. The worst case scenario had ALREADY been laid bare 3 seasons ago. It’s a MIRACLE it lasted this long. But the unknown connection to All-Might, AFO’s grudge with the man. Deku being hunted. And just…there’s no more hiding it. Thank GOD only the Todoroki’s have become aware with the top 3 heroes. Everyone else just believes it’s a connection with AFO. Which it is INTEGRALLY. But Deku becoming the new Symbol of Peace and All-Might’s successor HAS to be prevented from being FULLY leaked because then Deku gets blamed for the war itself. Because ALL OF THIS. Was for the sole purpose of hunting him down to kickstart the Dark Age AFO created before the era of the 4th holder.
It breaks my heart seeing Bakugo in a state where he likely would have barged into Deku’s hospital room and he would have screamed at a comatose Deku. (Such loving friends willing to do anything for each other right guys? I know he’s made strides, but that is PURELY Bakugo development. Not their relationship. I have to say it again.) But Uraraka and Iida would ABSOLUTELY be in the hospital room waiting for Deku to wake up if All-Might hadn’t asked for the room to himself so he can try and sense the OFA conversation. (Not at ALL a signal this man might just still have the prime power. It’s ANOTHER signal I can’t ignore.) It would make it SO much harder to see because the two of them care for Deku’s well being more than any other student.
And last but not least, get me a poster of Iida holding his chest. Because I am throwing that on the Iida chop gold medal pile. What the hell is he doing? I don’t know but I love it.

I think it is said in one of the bonus page of the manda that Touya/Dabi actually have a big resistance to fire too, but it's not enough to resist against his fire quirk (who is even stronger than endeavor's) and his resistance to ice is a lot better.

I know I keep commenting, but I keep thinking about new stuff as you guys discuss! 😆But to the point about separating Shoto, you have to also think about how long Endeavor did that, and that it wasn't just or Shoto's protection. We know that he hurt Shoto himself in the name of training him. Something the other kids also noticed. Natsuo and Dabi both called him out on it. And that the fact that you separating the kids will only make their relationship WORSE. Now Toya never got a chance to get to know Shoto, never formed any bond with him. He even admits later that him attacking Shoto was wrong and that Shoto himself had done nothing wrong. But even after 5 YEARS, rather than just talking to his kids or spending any time with them, he continues to ignore them, which is what is exacerbating the situation. In the end it really wasn't about being a hero or about Endeavor protecting Toya. Toya wanted a purpose, a reason for being, and as far as he knows. His only reason for being is to be a hero that can pass All Might. That's all he knows. If he can't do that, then basically in his father's eyes, he is worthless. He's nothing. He has no identity. It's that, that crushes Toya the most. Its that, that makes him so desperate. He want to have worth. And his father says he only has worth as a tool to surpass All Might. And now, he won't even look at him.

But even if he could, he’d be entirely reliant on it. If his support items got damaged or destroyed then suddenly we’re back to the original problem. All Might told Deku in season 4 that support items are good to have but you shouldn’t be totally reliant on them. They’re supporting your existing abilities and minor needs, not a full on cure.

I was surprised too, but @blacknoise is probably right. Enji is waaay taller than his wife so Fuyumi took her height growth trjectory but Natsu grew took Enji's though he's not as tall as Enji. He's halfway between the two.
