    In 1970 my dad bought our families first new car, a Buick Electra 225, AKA a deuce and a quarter. Had a 455 that was rated in the Chiltons at 375 hp and 500 lbft. I was 8 when we got it and had it for 6 years, I remember that thing was big but it hauled ass for such a huge yacht. 455 Buick has always been one of my favorite engines.

    I put a lot of time and effort into my 70 GS 455, converting it to stage 1, with a cam, lifters, springs, rebuilt carb, hei ign Alum intake. Instantly the revs went from 3800 to 5500! She was a beast! Had to sell it. Someday I’ll build a 65 skylark, with a 430! Thanks

      My neighbor had a stage 1 fully black, in the late 80s I use to drool over that car, I’d like too get a 71 vette and build it to L88 specs. Any start on your new car?

    My Grandpa was a Buick man- Last one he bought was a '67 2 door deuce and a quarter with a 430- looked good for a big car, and ran/ drove like a mid-size.... I surprised alot of guys with that sleeper! Grandma traded it in, and I remember crying when I found out! It was an ivory/ eggshell, and had every damned option you could order! I remember he owner of he dealership was a buddy of his and he delivered it personally to him! If a full-size GM (body by Fisher) had an option, it seemed like the big Buicks were the first ones to offer it..... Vintage Detroit iron, to be sure!!

      I TOTALLY agree. Back in high school in the late 70's a buddy of mine had a Riviera GS with the 430 big block, I swear it was hard to tell from the 455 it ran so good. Big block Buicks were easy to build into torque monsters. I had my uncles old '63 Lesabre left to me, that old Wildcat nailhead ran pretty good as I recall, had to burn premium in it tho or she would ping cause it had 10:1 pistons.

    No love for the 1964-1967 300, especially the 1964-1965 4bbl version? Oh how about the all aluminum 215? Then there is the 364 Nailhead. I would have loved if Buick brought back the 340 with the technology of the 3.8 L Series II or Series III. What a monster that would have been.

  • @MostlyBuicks
    @MostlyBuicks 4 роки тому +6

    The 350 small block production started with the 1968 model year. In 1967 they were still using the 300 and the 340 small block.

    • @oswaldmontecristo1035
      @oswaldmontecristo1035 3 роки тому +1

      The 350 was an improvement over the 340, not simply because of 10 extra cubes. The real advantage of the 350 was its tall narrow ports, which gave the engine a broader torque curve. Compare them and notice how remarkably similar the ports of the LS heads are on the current small block Chevies.

    • @MostlyBuicks
      @MostlyBuicks 3 роки тому +2

      @@oswaldmontecristo1035 I agree. I built a Buick 350 for my 1965 Skylark with 2:78 gears that ran neck and neck with my brother's 1965 Skylark also with 2:78 gears that had a stock 1971 Buick 455. A 1970 Buick 350 and a 1971 Buick 455 both had the same horsepower: 315. But I still like the 340 for its fuel economy and smooth operation. Any and ALL of these engines are better than a Chevy from any era or displacement, small or big block.

    My dad was the head mechanic in our city's Buick Dealership. I remember our 56 Buick Special that had a nailhead in it. We also had a new 68 Wildcat with a 430 big block. I drove that Wildcat in high school and it was big and sleek. When the secondaries opened everybody showed up in the rear view mirror. Nothing said here about the Buick V-6 engines that went to Indy. The Grand Nationals had the 3.8L turbo that was very quick. I now have an 89 Riviera in my fleet with the non turbo 3.8L LN3 engine. It makes good power and is very reliable. I will be swapping it out soon to put in my 3.8L L67 Supercharged engine. I love my Buick but also love my Vette, Pontiac, Ranchero, Cadillac and Ranger truck.

      I had a '90 Riviera...I loved it. Only wish it was rwd. One of my favorite things was the license plate slot...never seen that before, or since. The digital dash was also really cool. That old 3800 N/A was a savage and ran great with well over 100k miles on it. Miss that Riv and wouldn't mind owning another of a similar year (90-93). Hope ur L67 swap turns out awesome, I'm sure it will.

      The GS400 through '66 used the 401 nailhead, superseded for '67 by a 400 cube version of the all-new 430. The 400 was quicker in a straight line, but the 340 gave the A-body better balance and handling. On the whole, I'll take the 340 or even the 300-4-barrel "Wildcat 355" in my Special.

    • @oswaldmontecristo1035
      @oswaldmontecristo1035 6 років тому +5

      Amazing how people are so misinformed about Buick engines and their derivatives. 300-340-350 are all of the same family and are small blocks; 300" has a 3.75" bore and 3.4" stroke;. 340" has 3.75" bore and 3.85" stroke: 350 has 3.8" bore and 3.85" stroke. All of thee are derived from the 215". In fact, a 300 crank and 300" bore can be used in a 215" as well as its heads that gives it larger ports. 350 had different intake-exhaust valve order due to major revision of the cylinder head that featured a tall port. The famous Buick 225" V6 was also derived from the 300", sharing its pistons, rods and valve train components. The 231" in newer v6s had the 3.8" bore the 350s had.
      400-430-455" engines are big block Buicks and share no components at all with their small block cousins. Their arrangements are similar, like an inflated 350" motor, but rods, pistons, block and valve components are not interchangeable. Both small and big block Buick V8s have the same type of external oil pump arrangement and internal oil passages in heir blocks, and have similar oiling issues at high rpm's. Big block engines are more susceptible in oil issues as their extra large crank journals act like pumps to force the oil back against its pressure into the block
      Small block Buicks have torque similar to other brands big blocks. Big block Buicks couldn't be beat for torque. 510 ft.lbs. at 1800 RPMs was the most out of Detroit before the current generation of LS motors and Hellcats hit the scene
      Both small and big block Buicks have a distinct weight advantage over the competition. All iron 300-340-350 engines weigh in at 450 lbs. 400-430-455 series big blocks weigh in at 600 lbs, or about 25 lbs more than a small block Chevy.

      @@theeoddments960, We had a remedy for that engine not breathing with a simple fix. We would unscrew the breather cap top, flip it upside down and screw it back. Hence giving us about two inches of clearance, therefore sucking in cooler air to generate more horsepower. And that little 2bl carburetor loved it. Outstanding engine that 350cid was.

      Wrong. The 340 was the first generation small block that was introduced in 1966. It was a derivative of the 1964 300 motor but the 340 and the 350 are both the same color and look pretty similar. Best way to tell the difference is the staggered exhaust. The Nailheads were only in buicks, the 425 was in every Riv and a few wildcats i think. Oldsmobile had a 425 and Cadillac did too but they were different 425's. The 264,322,364,401,425 were all nailheads. Nailheads were available in every buick from 1953 to 1966. Quite phenomenal engines. in 1964 Buick's R&D put a small turbo on a 425 and it made 708ft-lbs of torque at 2800rpm... With a turbo about as big as a cantelope and no intercooler.

    So Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Chevy all made their own versions of a 350 small block, what's the similarities and differences in all of them? I know the Pontiac block is the same 'size' as all their other V8 blocks, as Pontiac doesn't make big/small blocks, they're just Pontiac blocks.

    • @oswaldmontecristo1035
      @oswaldmontecristo1035 6 років тому +3

      Ah yes, the days before the corporate V8 (Chevy small block) in the middle,late malaise era of the 70's. Since each 350 had its own brand's block, they all weighed differently and had different horsepower/torque curves. Each division had their own style A, B and X bodies that utilized them, so they all had their own distinct spring rates and shocks to refine their rides. That is why they were each more distinct from each other. A Cutlass was different from a Skylark that was different from a Chevelle that was different from a Lemans. And a Nova was different from an Appollo that was different from an Omega that was different from a Ventura

      Pontiacs, like Buicks and Olds, did not have big block/small block. They had large journal/small journal, which is an interior feature. So they all looked the same on the outside, except for casting numbers, paint color, and decals.

    • @oswaldmontecristo1035
      @oswaldmontecristo1035 6 років тому +2

      Not quite right, Jack. Both Chevy and Buick were small blocks with center to center bores in common with other small displacement engines in their respective family (215-300-340-350 Buicks) and (262-265-283-302-305-307-327-350-400 Chevrolet). Neither the Buick or Chevy small block engines would interchange manifolds, cams or heads with their big block brethren, unlike the Olds and Pontiacs did with theirs. All these different displacements were obtained by changing bores and strokes.
      There were some journal sizes variations and deck height changes, and rod lengths from the 215 to the 300 and from the 300 to the 340 in the Buick family.

    • @jordanwiley4582
      @jordanwiley4582 6 років тому +2

      That was only p0ntiac. Buick, chevy, and olds had distinct SB and BB engines.

    • @theeoddments960
      @theeoddments960 5 років тому

      Oswald Montecristo Trust me those “little” changes made all the difference with the personality of the engine. The small block Chevy is a high rpm screamer and the Buick small block is a small journal torque monster. Buick is done at about 5 grand. I should know I’ve got a 72 skylark myself. You can’t really go passed 320 without losing that torque way down low but if you built both engines build wise the sbc you’d get 350 horse 360 torque. Buick you’d get about 300 horse and 420 torque. The stroke on the Buick is bigger than a small block 383 stroker, so that says a lot.

      Yea they did! Available for '54 and '55 in the Special only. It was a small bore 322, 3 5/8" verses 4" on the 322. The 364 had both a larger bore and longer stroke than the 322.

    • @jamesbosworth4191

    "Small block"? "Big block"? The 350, 400, 430 and 455 were all the same size block.
    The 350 had the longest stroke, so it was often mistaken for a 400/430/455, due to its width.
    The aluminum 265 engine had the same dimensions as the Chevy small block.
    Research, people. It's not hard.

    • @oswaldmontecristo1035
      @oswaldmontecristo1035 6 років тому +4

      350 Buick was not part of the 400-430-455 family, which were big blocks that superceded the famous nailheads. It was a small block derived from the 215 aluminum motor (215-300-340-350)

      No, GM produced buick nailheads in 1952. the 1953 buick had the option of the 264 nailhead or the 322 nailhead. The straight eight was not being produced in 1953 so there were only nailheads. CHEVY didnt make a v8 before 55, buick did though.
