Gideon Vs Rossi: Who Do Criminal Minds Fans Like More?

- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- Criminal Minds wrapped up in February 2020 after 15 seasons on the air, but there is one fan debate that has raged on-who was the better head of the BAU? The first two seasons saw Mandy Patinkin as the grizzled Jason Gideon, but Patinkin didn’t like the violence depicted on the show, and he was replaced with Joe Mantegna, who played the much more easygoing David Rossi. It’s obviously not a matter of talent, as Patinkin and Mantegna are both great actors with charisma to spare, but there is still active discussion about who was better for the show. Let’s take a look at whether Criminal Minds fans like Rossi or Gideon more.

What do you have to say about the debate of whether Gideon or Rossi is better?
Of course Rossi is better. He has more heart, is funnier.
Rossi!
That's comparing joke of 1984 to the dark knight joker.
Gideon is the best character in criminal minds.
Gideon
Gideon is clearly the most underrated character on this series.... he was brilliant
I love Rossi too but Team Gideon
Rossi for the win
He was the best
Gideon for the win
i 100% agree!!
gideon was an ass
Love them both. Rossi is a great character but I like Gideon better.
Same, Gideon is just down to earth, when ppl say don’t base yourself of first impressions Rossi gave the impression of “I’m number 1 and the boss around here” but Gideon accepted that he had to step down a bit and let hotch take the initiative
I have to disagree but each on their own. I’d choose Rossi any day. Gideon was a bit too stone cold for me.
I love Gideon better
Gideon hand's down
Gideon was the soul of the show. He was tough on the outside sometimes but he was a softie. He brought so much compassion to the show. Favorite character ever. Stopped watching after he left.
Same left after hes death
Same. I really can't understand how people choose Rossi over him. Rossi is a great actor but his character is pretty underdeveloped thus far (I'm in season 4) and don't get me wrong I get the reasons WHY, but I honestly think it depends on your reasons for watching the show. I liked Criminal minds for it's more analytical perspective that it contained in the first three seasons where it really focused more on the psychology of these killers and had a good balance of character development within the team as well.
IMO, after Gideon leaves the show is way more washed down and mostly focuses on the drama aspects and completely throws Realism out the window.
I feel like Gideon has more presence, but Rossi is family
Its funny, Patakmin left the show because Gideon was probably getting to that darker side of his character and probably wanted change. But they probably didn’t want that to change. As soon as he left, they bring in his replacement and they change his personality to a lighter side, opposite of Gideon’s character. I think Rossi is a great character, but I think Gideon, if given the chance and a change of personality would have shined.
Actually patankin left because the show as a whole was getting to dark and violent for his tastes
Wow. Just yesterday I was telling my sister how much I wished Gideon had been on the show longer. He was just so damn interesting.
Very true
I wish that Elle was on longer.
Love them both honestly wish mandy didn't leave so early we maybe could have seen him grow like Rossi did.
I think when Gideon was in the show, the team was still pretty young, Gideon basically solved most cases by himself. Rossi were able to grow because the writers didn't make him the Sherlock of the team, but, as you've mentioned, the Dad of BAU.
The fact that we still have this conversation, is proof of what Gideon represents for this show.
Gideon. He felt more like an alpha male leader. Rossi was too soft and nice for me.
Rossi was never the head of the group.
@@oleeoleeoo2610 yes he was a few times, FYI
I love them both but it’s Gideon for me! I also think that he was caring in his own way. I really liked his personality. I think the BAU became a family very early. They all had different personalities but it’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other and you saw that very early on. At first, i didnt like Rossi but he did eventually grow on me. They tried to do the same thing with his character but it probably didn’t fit the actor who plays him. All of them have come a long way as far as character development as well.
NO WAY, GIDEON Was The Best.
Fr.
I love them both differently.
Well said.
@@Mikki220 i love all of them
Sometimes jj and garcia can get on my nerves, maybe even morgan, hotch and reid but i love all of them
Gideon for me I loved his intensity
You can't really hate either of them since they both started the BAU.
Gideon, by a land slide.
I watched the show in the early years with Gideon, but lost interest with the Rossi character.
Same...gideon is too great
i like the way gideon gove profile. he think and talk fast like a pro.. rossi take time like to talk, slow and steady.
Gideon was fun to watch but his actor suddenly leaving the show soured him for me.
Gideon just seemed sad all the time.
Well he was supposedly based off of the real John E. Douglas and if you don't know about him, at one point he was so swamped with work he fell into a short term coma from a brain inflammation. Can't imagine that guy was very happy either at that point in his life. Must be a stressful job.
Sad and, maybe, angry... Yeap.
Imagine seeing all those murders. It would change your personality.
That’s what makes him great! Depth of character. Seems like they just wanted the show to be more upbeat.
Gideon, all the way...
Gideon all the way!!!
Gideon was the best profiler
But Rossi was more of a father to all of them
Criminal Minds was more 'real' (dark?) Back then
I liked Gideon, but as you say he was there at the beginning and didn’t really have a chance for the whole cast to meld. When Rossi first came I’m I thought they had made a Huge mistake, but it didn’t take long for him to get into the character that I knew and loved. But the one character that for some reason didn’t get the recognition he deserved is Hotchner. I thought he and his character were great. I think he took us though the highs & lows that a man in his position would have gone through very well. And I only watched the show a few times after he left. With both Hotch and Morgan gone it lost a lot!
Both were equally important. Gideon was necessary for the team to grow confident in their own abilities. His influence on Reid is obvious, but also Morgan and the others learned a lot from Gideon those first two seasons. Rossi was just as hard and stubborn as Gideon in those first few seasons, yet the team had grown by then so they could overcome that attitude. Something they wouldn't have been able to do with Gideon as he was their boss. Rossi was never their boss. Hotch and later Emily were. The team learned their craft under Gideon and they learned to fly and rely on each other as a team with Rossi.
Gideon was never their boss hotch was in charge
Rossi feels like family and is pretty funny so I like him better
ROSSI FOR SURE HANDS DOWN. ROSSI IS MY LIGIT SPIRIT ANIMAL
I like both of them
Edited but Gideon more
For me hands down, in a heartbeat it will be Joe. his rossi the italian flavour was just the perfect mix when Mandy left. big shoes to fill. but Joe did it with such poise . My vote is with Joe"Rossi" Mantegna.
gideon was such an amazing profiller. he was really smart and so good at his job. I am on episode 3x06 now so i am not gonna talk about rossi since I dont know him well but I really miss gideon... he was brilliant.
Gideon will always be better
I loved Gideon when he played Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. You killed my father, prepare to die !
Are we going to point out how Mandy Patinkin left because this was too dark for him? But then joined the cast of Homeland?
To be honest. I think the true reason why he left the show is because he got tired of doing it.
Gideon easily Gideon
Gideon
TEAM GIDEON
You can’t really compare the two, it was a different show with Gideon. I love Gideon’s manner, he’s always very composed and exactly the kind of guy you’d want to run the BAU. Rossi is more fun. The guy’s a silver fox, he’s undoubtedly a very amusing character that contrasts Gideon so much. I wish Gideon had more development, the way he was portrayed was just so very appropriate for the format of the show. Overall I go back and forth, sometimes Gideon’s character is more entertaining than Rossi, and Rossi’s is occasionally wiser than Gideon. I love both characters a lot, and if I had to pick it would be Rossi just because he’s been in the show longer and the audience gets to know him better.
Gideon never ran the BAU though. Hotch was always Unit Chief both during Gideon's time on the team and afterwards until he left the FBI himself. I guess you could say though, that Hotch was the official leader of the team, whereas Gideon (and later Rossi) was the spiritual leader.
@@rebekahsegun8319 Gideon was Hotch's boss, in fact it is already seen in the series, and has been repeated several times, Gideon was the main boss, Hotch was the second in command, and Hotch commanded the others but not Gideon.
Definitely Rossi but really never got over losing Hotch (sp) to the “witness protection program” 😭😭😭
Rossi!!! Cuz he's Fat Tony too😂
Gideon was a one man BAU who the others done the leg work for. Things changed with all the characters after Patinkin left
Who was the Unit Chief? Who's office was at the top of the stairs? HOTCH !!!
@@nathankrush3289 that was after Gideon left
@@kevinramos4168 Have you not seen the first episode? The brass asked Hotch to assess Jason Gideon during the first moments.
Even when Gideon was there, Hotch's office was at the top of the stairs. The producers based it on the offices of actual FBI regional directors.
That's because Gideon wasn't a bureaucrat
Gideon was only replaced because the actor quit. There's no telling how far the character would had gone if the actor stayed on.
Gideon had a sense of humor, it was more sarcastic than most tv characters, a trait of the actor is playing him. The character had a level of intelegence and insight that will never be matched, which makes him much better.
On one absolutely on one played their role as good as Gideon in my opinion if he had stayed the show would still be on the air they couldn't replace him then it started losing everyone else by the end i could barely 👀 it
I like both. They're not the same characters. As was already stated, Rossi had 12 seasons to grow as a character whereas Gideon only had 2 and a half. We got to know Rossi a lot more. Heck, we learned more about Gideon when he died than we did when he was still on the show- especially because the earlier seasons of Criminal Minds very rarely touched on the character's personal lives. It was 90% the cases they worked. Gideon always had a stronger fatherly/mentor presence on the show- especially towards Reid. Rossi was more of the rich, cool and wise uncle who gives you some good advice here and then. I just wish we could have seen more of Gideon. He had a lot of potential to grow as a character.
Im a Rossi fan.
Just to change the subject.
Does it freak anyone else out when Hotch smiles?
My husband calls Hotch "butthole lips" 🤣
Honestly, GIDEON was the best profiler of the BAU, no one even comes close.
I liked Gideon's character since the 1st episode
100 percent Gideon
GIDEON!!!!
Gideon died by the one bird serial killer guy
they both bring something unique to the show, though i think gideons awkwardness was kinda interesting
Although they are characters, if I had a boss - I'd choose Gideon. I love Rossi, but Gideon in my mind told people what they need to hear. Rossi told people what they want to hear. I've binged watched Criminal Minds many times, but I've always preferred Gideon.
Team Gideon always
Gideon moved over to the CIA and defended the Homeland. Even changed his Identity.
Like both of them a lot but I like Rossi the most he brings in some energy and life to the team
Gideon. Rossi is funny, but he's fulfills a character archetype without much depth beyond that. Gideon is incredibly complex and layered, a unique character.
gideon is better.. reason why the show spawned new seasons over the years.. if you'd look back on the first season it was not as interesting if it wasn't for gideon..
i think gideon ruined it for me
The show became more popular after Gideon left.
I thought Rossi would be a god awful replacement for Gideon. I was wrong. They did it right. Rossi is different enough to be enjoyable in his own right. And the Gideon episodes have Elle, which is a strike against his episodes.
Criminal Minds? Rossi can't even kidnap a baby
I'm just here for Inigo Montoya, Rube, and Saul Berenson...
With Elle and Gideon's departure Criminal Minds became a Scooby Dooby-esq show to me. More so after Hotchner's exit. Wish Patinkin didn't abandon the show!
Rossi was good. But i prefer Gideon
Patinkin was best in Dead Like Me.
I don't know if it so much Gideon's character I prefer or Rossi's but I love the first couple seasons because of how dark they were. They didn't seemed to be as dark towards the end. And I hated when Morgan left. I had more time to grow with Gideon because I prefer the seasons up until Morgan left over the later ones.
I loved Gideon I think he’s my favourite overall character
Hands down Gideon. He delivered twists and story bombs so brilliantly that even though it was violent, I loved the show only because of him. Rossi was fine, he was nice, but he wasn't fitting of that main guy. When you think Criminal Minds, and you have to think of the main representative, Gideon was too compelling and dramatic and low-key made you realize he was able to figure out most criminal mindsets because of his own dark secrets, and Rossi would have been better loved as a side character.
I love them both but for me it's Rossi. His uncle style attitude towards the team, just made it better for me
Literally had this conversation last night how strange!
I love them both. They had their strengths and weaknesses and I loved them for different reasons.
Gideon did not have any weaknesses
Both, but Gideon if I had to choose
Whoever made this forgot Gideon is dead. How could he have showed up in the finale? Lol
Gideon was way better by a land slide
gideon > rossi
I like Rossi better as a character. Of course Gideon had a major impact on the team he helped them grow especially Spence. I also wish we had Rossi and Gideon.
A question for the ages
I'm only in the first season.I already knew he was gone. What I don't understand is why we watched a legendary character like Agent Gideon for 3 seasons out of 15… I knew he was different from other agents since I first saw him. His look, his way of solving events, his intelligence, his heart… It made me very sad to watch such a legend very little and then watch it die… As an agent, you will always remain my legend. Always Team Gideon, i will stop watching this show after he’s gone.
Gideon was the better character. He tied Reid into his personality. Once Gideon left and they realised Reid couldn't connect to anyone else on the team the same way they decided he was the one that needed to change which lead to us getting the blank slate, nothing special about him Reid we have in the later seasons. It's a damn shame that this show tanked as hard as it did. I blame it mostly on fatigue, because I understand how tiring it can be working on one thing year in and year out without ever changing anything up but the network should've pulled the plug a lot earlier than they did.
Yes Rossi sucks. Ever since he came in the show. It is all about family bs. And they never seem to disagree. Honestly what people like about Rossi is what I hate about him.
@@subwaysurfer5378 he's a dull character. Doesn't seem the slightest bit interested in their work. Has nothing unique about himself whatsoever and the few things that separate him from the other cast members is like... cooking, multiple wifes. It's almost like someone pulled up a catalogue of stereotypical old-man traits and picked them out for him. So boring.
@@subwaysurfer5378 I just watching the show so I haven't met Rossi yet, but Mr. Subway Suffer. I can already tell the kind of person you are. You're one of those people who say.
"My opinion is the only one that matters, and I hate anyone who disagrees with me".
I enjoyed them both they taught me many things the, whole cast have over the years I would have enjoyed them having more screen time together
I'm still new and haven't seen enough of Rossi to form any type of opinion on him. So yeah Gideon all the way.
the show was undoubtedly at its best while Gideon was there. Season 3 and 4 were good as well. Rossi was a good addition to the show and I love how they tied these two characters together, later into the show. The later season became too much "generic american tv" imo as in contrast to the early seasons that were groundbreaking. And the characters felt more distinct from each other. Like they each had their own personal lives outside of what we see on the show. Gideon, most of all in that regard. Later on it turned into a "we're a big family and we're constantly feely with each other". Like one of those american family shows. It's not what the early seasons was about. I do like Gideon and I do like the earlier seasons more because it felt more real and less cliche. Rossi was quite a good replacement, but that character alone wasn't able to stop the slow deterioration of the show.
In a way I'm glad Gideon left the show the way he did because it felt so real. It made the events of the show more meaningful. And Patinkin had a presence that nobody else on the show had. With Gideon's departure, the other characters started coming into their own. But they really needed that carefully paced start. And it worked. My all time favourite crime-show and I love going back to those early seasons.
And I see a lot of people who don't like Gideon simply because he called Garcia stupid when she unintenionally leaked all that personal information on the FBI into the hands of the Fisher King. And because Gideon didn't remain as a babysitter to Reid, lol. So I'm yet to see any valid criticism against Gideon. I don't take the shipping-portion of the fanbase seriously, because when they're not fighting over who they want to hook up, they're posting pictures of Reid's actor on instagram. Both of which has nothing to do with the show itself.
Loved them both
Gideon was only on the show for 3 seasons but he was brilliant and was the soul of CM. So many characters come and go but he was simply irreplaceable. Had Mandy stayed on, his storyline could have been so perplexing...
Gideon, I love Rossi, but Gideon pretty much was the show when he was in it, and I loved his relationship with Reid
Gideon is more of a dad and Rossi’s an uncle
There was one episode in which Rossi pulled a full Gideon and solved the entire case by himself by playing the unsub like a violin. (I think it was about a college professor obsessed with golden ratio or smth but may be smth else i dont remember). That epiosde made me think "it's not about gideon, it's about someone taking charge in some cases and outperforming the team" that's why gideon was so cool. Cz he could recognize a dude while buying some gas. Cz he could fool a jihadist and have a last minute reveal. If they shot the episodes the same way, it wouldnt matter if it was gideon or reed or hotch. After season 2 most epiosed follow a structure where there are no shocks at the end. They build a progile and catch the dude, or kill, or he gets away. But the formula never changes
Rossi is not Gideon. And Gideon is not Rossi. They are diffirent people and both of them is good. But I like Rossi. He is looking so frank for me. (I'm sorry. If English is not your mother language you can not make true sentences. Sometimes.)
I loved both their characters 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Rossi! Not even a questionable answer for me! Rossi is my fave in the show, period!
Rossi was my favorite, he felt more family oriented to the team . ❤❤ Gideon seem cold to me
Gideon has always been my leader, and it’s 2021 after a year of virus!
I say, Rossi. But just because he was so much longer on the show. And he is more enjoyable to watch :D
Bring gedeon back 😭
I am on team Gideon
I can’t compare Gideon was my first love but I grew up off Rossi yikes I love them both
Mandy Patinkin hated being on the show. He found it's subject matter disturbing and soul sucking. His character couldn't have developed because he wasn't interested in it.
relax
Rossi for me!
Oh gosh, I'm *never* this early! I know I'm not first but, I'm so honored! I don't have a speech prepared, but now, I understand the excitement!😁
I hope you find a reason to smile today.🥰
I love both characters but I like Gideon more after going back and watching the the show I like how Gideon was the mentor? To ried but also respect ried as well go back to the first episode of the series and you see hotchner tell the the local police department as special agent ried and Gideon said Dr ried and the fact that he is very smart he just has a little ptsd from the 6 agents that die in Boston with him he also help them figure out most of their cases, like Ried in the later seasons and don’t get me wrong Rossi is a very good character to yes he was a little arrogant and had a bit of the ego. We first came in went overtime came love him. But I just at it in to different ways you got the one guy who was very smart like I said and could beat ried in chess, but also it’s a book of everyone he saved and the other one kept a charm bracelet of the three kids that’s parents were murdered. He also left for several years the right books about crime The other one stayed until his college friend died because he let the one criminal should’ve put away go
who of tehnb 2 is better a difficult question i think both of thm are great but maybe tossi is a little better because his actor was the voice of fat tony (the simpsons) but thats only my opinion
The connection Rossi had with the team outweighs Gideon in my opinion
