    As a practicing Secular Buddhist, I want to understand Buddhism and Shaolin. How does training in deadly martial arts work with the ethical precepts, etc., including the admonition not to take life or cause harm? How does the martial arts aspect fit within the broader dharma/teaching? Do they cover this in the full video at all?

      The Shaolin Monastery itself has participated in multiple wars throughout history by the way of letting the government recruit warrior monks. In return, the government supports the monastery financially and building monuments. Even Zen Buddhist monks don't often agree with each other and have varying opinions on spirituality. You can check out Ranton's videos on his channel where he talks about his experience as 3 year being a disciple for the actual warrior monks and his conversations with some Buddhist monks. But TL;DR Shaolin is not this holy place with spiritual people whose morality transcends regular people. There are many monks who act on their own greedy and malevolent ideals, and some of them are in positions of influence and power within the monastery.

      they dont really train "deadly martial arts", they hardly fight or spar, they train performative martial art, they can still spar if they choose so, but a basic boxing gym would make you a more competent fighter than shaolin

    Pandas are actually no longer part of the group of species facing extinction, there are actually a lot of them now.
    Some people in the World Wildlife Fund suggested changing their logo (their panda), but they did not go ahead with it since the branding is engrained pretty hard into people's minds already.

      Lennon wrote a beautiful line for his plastic Ono band album; _God is a concept by which we measure our pain_ .
      I never needed to find religion when I was sick and dying as a teenager but I watched a lot of old people around be find the idea while they were cracking jokes about how dark their piss was suggesting how long they had left. Probably if you feel despair then religion has its comforts to some. I just listened to early Beatles, Alan partridge and played poker on an LCD handheld 😂 I wonder how many people
      Saw how quickly the sick and dying spoke to god and therefore try and create the worst condition they can handle. I think there’s a monk sect that torture themselves for closeness to god.

      @@Dinnizzel97 that album, John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band is one of the most philosophically and emotionally raw albums you’ll ever hear. It’s got some absolute gems on there. The back story is that Lennon and Clapton, who were addicted to heroin, formed a band and did a live show. Lennon then found primal scream therapy which you’re supposed to use to erase childhood trauma. You do this by slowly regressing to being a baby and then slowly make your way back to adulthood, processing your past experience with you adult brown and reacting by raw emotion outpouring. Only Lennon didn’t want to relive any of it so he stopped back at being a baby And against everyone’s advice left the programme in a state of vulnerability and unprocessed emotions. That album nails every single track to the wall in one hit. So good.

    For anyone thinking that Kung-Fu is a legit martial art, keep in mind someone could study Kung-Fu for 12 years and get absolutely destroyed by a 16 year old American kid that wrestled a single year in high school. Lose to a kid that had 6 months of competitive BJJ. Get absolutely stomped by an 18 year old kid that has been training Kickboxing or MT for a year and has done 1 smoker. Its BAAAAAD.

    • @Majorfuckinghero
      @Majorfuckinghero 2 місяці тому

      it IS a legit martial art. As in, art. But no, it's not very effective in a real fight at all. But I don't think that's the point being made at all either.

      For anyone thinking BJJ or Wrestling are legit martial arts, keep in mind someone could study BJJ for 12 years and get absolutly destroyed by a 16 year old Chinese kid with a sword that learned how to fight and cut for one year in Kung Fu School. BJJ doesn't even teach weapon techniques. Its BAAAAAD.
      (No honestly much respect to BJJ and Wrestling! I am just anoyed by Internet Warriors that can't understand that martial arts encompasses so much more then pure self defence and unarmed combat)
