  • North Dakota during the pioneer days was a very inhospitable place. Winters were longer and colder.
What a better way to learn history than to go to see where these people are buried. Try to learn a little bit of their story.
Because Jesse and I have studied other pioneers, and both of us have spent most of our lives in North Dakota, we have gained a certain feel of what it was like during those days.
We studied my stepfather who was a pioneer. He grew up not far from here. We found the one-room schoolhouse where we think he attended School. If we can make it back there I might film it.
Now I understand why my stepfather was so frugal with money. He always reminded us to shut off the light when we left the room.
I saw the farm where he grew up. It was a tough place in tough times. With 10 Brothers
and one sister, they were all expected to work. And they started young. They worked long days and endured long and bitterly cold winters.
These are the people who founded this country. Many died young. Others gave up and went home.
There are many Norwegians in this Cemetery. That I know for sure. We talk about a couple of them.
