I am still listening to this song, October 4, 2020. I graduated from high school, June 4, 1973. I have this song on Eddie Kendricks C.D. I purchased at Lexington Mall in Baltimore, Maryland several years.
Had some damn good time during this era. We would throw some house parties that was off the wall. No fight, no hatin just straight up parting. B-More and VA in the house all day long::)
I first heard this song 🎵 D'Angelo. Who did it justice. Didn't change it too much. Has no Idea it was originally Eddie's. Oh my goodness. What a Gift and a Talent. So sad he's died. I loved his voice.
Oh he had the prettiest smile! I had such a crush on him. I look at this and remember when I was a young girl when he sang, "CAN I" I just knew he was singing to me, lol . I cherish Ole Skool cause back then they werent playing, you had to come with it no studio stuff . You had to have that Raw talent. Those guys should have been millionaires.
This was one song that started with knowing that the Temptations wouldn't be as we knew them. When the song was about to end with its final crescendo, sadness rose in my heart, appreciating a dynamic group the Tempts with Kendricks had been and that an era was gone. Just then, as if on cue, the entire room was on their feet dancing in homage to the phenom that will always be with us: "What You Say To That!" Everyone in the room was on their feet!
GOOD TO HEAR THIS AGAIN....EDDIE WAS MY MAN...I SWEAR I WAS GONNA RUN AWAY TO DETROIT AND MARRY THIS MAN....LOL....AND I WAS SERIOUS...R.I.P. EDDIE THE LOVE IS STILL THERE
We probaly wouldn't heard any of these songs if he didn't go solo....... These songs were written especially for him when he went solo......... November 10th 2014........
May 16, 2010 OMMFG!!! This Eddie K joint right here, is and still gets me grooving when i hear it. Grew up on it, especially when the break part comes on, that's when u grab your girl dancing with u real close and start your GET THE MESSAGE GRIND, and make it history. Thanks for doing a great job posting this legendary jam, and with good sound quality, next time LOUDER, some of us who have partied to these jams, may have a little hearing problem O.K. lol. Thank you very much.
After 48 years i found this truly profound song about a man by a man to a woman that deserves being treated as she should be with honesty and respect. A man being what a man should be, honorable. This song is so applicable to this day and always will be. I have shared it again and again. I've been married most of my life.even after to divorces i still hold on to the truths love and devotion brings. How wonderful it is to be a good man. I love it. Never will i not be that. This song lyrics resignates my soul to help a young boy become a man to be honorable in many ways. thank God for the hearers of this melody. As men of color always be care takers of our Queens hearts 💕 it helps us to be stronger everyday in every way !✨️
Walking the rain is a secret love of mine and has been ever since my best beloved Father turned me on to it in 1976.... My Father and I kept it between us because others just couldn't capture the brilliance of the instrumental arrangement of walking in the rain...... But we both Loved every bit of it..... RIP Papa George !
I play this song when I'm working around the house. It's a good song, but not TOO badass. I can stay focused and not get distracted by powerful grooves. It is long,Introspective and thought provoking. Big ups Eddie K. (R.I.P.)
Have a recording of this played on Radio One review show when it was released as a single in the UK in October 1974. Always loved it, but only when I read Nile Rodger's autobiography did I realise its significance. as a founding disco track.
Going to the gay clubs i New York city in the 70's we would live for this song. Studio 54,Sanctuary, The Tamberlaine. It was an ecstatic time. Loved Eddie Kendricks.
The Young Senators rocked this. DC Summer in the parks, Those were the days 70's.. Mark 4, The Room. You could party and not worry about getting shot. DAM, This generation will never see it.
Two people, Eddie Kendricks and Patricia Neal, were born in Birmingham, Alabama some few years apart. Like close neighbors, both would end up with successful careers in the future. Eddie Kendricks would end up as a member of the Temptations and later, a successful solo career known for his Mickey Mouse high pitch vocals. Patricia Neal who would later go under the stage name Fannie Flagg would become a writer, comedian, game show panelist and finally, a best=selling author. Her earlier stage appearances often involved carrying a rebel flag, a symbol that often disturbs many African Americans even now. When Eddie saw one of her performances, rumor has it that he wrote a song about it. The result, "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind".
I use this song to introduce the topic "Black Women and Feminism". I use to illustrate how Black women often choose race before gender. However during the 1970's, some Black academics choose to align themselves with the causes outlined by White feminists. Without judgment, our brothers (as reflected in the song) come back to our struggle. Notice the African drums. Smile
@goldheart2 YES, I'm with you on that!! It reminds me of a Hot Summer Block Party in LI, partying with great friends and feeling good. If you don't know, you better ask somebody....!!!
Eddie Kendricks -- Delicious! Back in the 60's, if I had had the chance I would have thrown everything I HAD on you! Telling the truth, shaming the devil. Ida been sanging Dianna Ross', I'm Gonna Get Chah, Look out boy, cause I'm gonna get you! I could have ran away from home.
Eddie had the best falsetto/tenor in music...ever....PERIOD!!!
