I am late to your channel but catching up quickly on all of your episodes. Your knowledge on jazz musicology informs me tremendously as I engage and enjoy all these artists and record labels. Whether you speak about history or spirituality it resonates with me beyond just music but also as a fellow human being. I plan to make a trip through Minnesota just to experience the cafe and have a chat. Best of luck!
Just starting getting into Jazz the last couple of years having about 100 titles so I am still exploring a lot. At first I couldn't get into Coltrane but now I am obsessed with his recordings. My go to has been Stanley Turrentine, for some reason his playing just hits me in my soul. I usually go with the recordings of the 50's and 60's and am amazed with the sheer amount of great artist.
I listened to this episode last week and I relate. Concerning the ten, I gotta roll Kenny Drew in there. Kenny and Tommy Flanagan are two of the most soulful players that ever sat down with the 88s. They made everyone in the group better…as a leader or a member. I can’t even imagine what Coltrane’s ‘Blue Train’ would be without Kenny.
Happy Birthday Shep! As someone who got into jazz in the last couple of years your videos have been my main source to navigate this new world of sound!
Belated Happy Birthday. I have listened to a good number of your episodes with great interest, and this one especially. Anybody who has Horace Parlan on their top 10 list is a friend og mine 👍 I believe, I have everything Horace was ever on, and he was my friend and mentor for 30 years. Keep swingin' and good luck with the coffee shop. Jakob from Copenhagen
Happy birthday Dan, hope you had a great day. Totally agree with you on your message of unity and lack of things to believe in. 🙏 Great list, with some for me to check out as always, really appreciate your insights every time. Got an idea when you review the new Sonny Clark TP, how about looking forward to the other TPs already announced and giving us some insight into some of them. Cheers Graham
happy bday -- watching you makes me continue to engage with and expand my record collection. i now have everybody digs bill evans queued up for my morning coffee tomorrow. peace piece.
Grant Green is an excellent choice! He would be in my top 5 favorite jazz artists! He was so consistent with his albums, which something you touched on in your video! Horace Parlan is another great one! Tough to find his Blue Note albums, but those are some killer sessions! Happy Birthday man!
Happy birthday and great list, it gives me a greater sense of your own personal taste given all the options you could have picked from your massive collection. I always enjoy these personal lists as I find readers' and critics' polls tend to lose the nuance as it becomes more about the usual suspects (Miles, Coltrane, Ellington, Louis etc). Was surprised there was no Monk given how often you talk about your love of Monk on the show! I was familiar with almost all of the artists on your list but had never heard Johnny Smith, that was a great discovery. That version of Mood Indigo from the album was tasty. Thanks for the tip!
Happy birthday! Your picks are very similar to my top 10s. I really got turned on to the Three Sounds from watching your channel. Absolutely love that Bill Evan’s album. I noticed a lot of the stuff you picked that I also love are albums that you don’t have to work at. I don’t know if I’m making any sense but some albums I like but I have to work at liking them by listening to them multiple times and analyzing them. But the albums I love most are the ones I fall in love with the first few notes I hear and and I can just simply chill and be immersed without putting any work in. Sometimes I just want to go into a near vegetative state after a shit day at work and many of your picks have helped. My favorite of your list is that Ellington/Coltrane album. Lucked into an early press for 10 bucks and absolutely love that album. Thanks.
Thats exactly it, some records are hard work and require being very attentive... Garland is just relaxing AND never corny ... its easy listening plus has soul!!! A rare commodity
Shep Happy Birthday Dan!! And I wish you many more. It’s your birthday and yet you gift me with Horace Parlan?? That just doesn’t seem right. First rounds on me!! Paul
we should be nicer to each other, NONE of us have been chosen.... there is no special group or religion... the humility of space would do the world some good
Hey Dan, Happy Belated Birthday. Kind of random question but I wasn't able to find any definite answer online...what is Kenny Burrell's heritage/ethnicity? Conflicting accounts say he's 100% black but fair skinned, some say hes mixed raced, and others say he's white. It's not that important for me to know but just something I've been wondering. Thanks!
Great job as usual. My list is different, but I like every guy on your list too, and like you said there are hundreds of others that everybody should know and listen to as well. Red Garland makes me think of Hank Jones and he makes me think of Ray Bryant and he makes me think of Duke.... Well you know how it goes. I do want to talk about Art Blakey a bit. You mention him quite often and you and I are in complete agreement about his importance to the entire jazz canon. Cheer leader #1. He is a sharp instrument as a drummer too. To place him in perspective with a contemporary you recently compared him with Max Roach. Another sharp instrument. In my youth I was privileged to have met and studied with Max briefly. Max, schooled in traditional drumming, inspired by Kenny Clark, could be compared to a surgeon. Very precise, disciplined, under control at all times. By comparison, Art, inspired by Chick Webb, self taught, teetering on the brink with wild abandon many times, was like a chain saw. His enthusiasm was contagious, he was an unstoppable force. Two great drummers and not everybody knows this, but great friends too. Take care and happy birthday. Oh and just to throw more guitar names out there, I'll take Joe Pass any day too, and let's not forget to mention the incomparable Django. So much jazz, so little time.
Horace was a very great player, he recorded a lot ! in Europe and Japan from the mi 60's to his dead, 2017. Kenny just got 90 this week by the way but Johnny is very near to Kenny in terms of style and touch ! Most of the trumpet players that I knew and know, for them, the very best Clifford's album is this one with strings. Great choice, great presentations ! Again ! TOP !
that Clifford with strings is so beautiful!!! I love kennys playing so much... aND HE IS A GREAT SIDE MAN AS WELL... i JUST FEEL JOHNNYS BODY OF WORK IS ALWAYS SOMETHING I AM ON THE MOOD FOR.... BUT ITS A VERY TOUGH CALL
Happy birthday Dan.. You're a treasure, the world needs more folks like you, have a good day!

I like how you put that a small species group occupying a small blue marble and a huge universe
we should be nicer to each other, NONE of us have been chosen.... there is no special group or religion... the humility of space would do the world some good
