    Insane work. I can't imagine how much time and effort you put into this transcription considering the fact that Brad is not like a typical bebop player.

    I first heard this recording not long after I started studying jazz over a decade ago... I come back to it every few years, thinking I’ve learned a thing or two and that maybe this won’t shock me as much as it did when I first heard it.
    I’m always wrong.
    Nice job with the transcription!

    this is an amazing solo by Brad Mehldau. The way he takes his time building a dialog and then swings like mad!!!! He akes it and doesn't stop, ON FIRE!!! Thank you for doing the transcription I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this and am learning from the transcription. Thanks for all your hard work Tom. Peace

      Bryant Miano lol insanity

    • @matthewnewton8812
      @matthewnewton8812 5 років тому

      Bryant Miano Wellllll yeaaaaahhh, but that’s not a useful comparison first of all because most metronomes stop at 208 so you’d set it to the half note, not the quarter note, but more to the point it’s not a useful comparison anyway because there’s plenty of jazz tunes at this speed (most of oscar Peterson and like all of phineas newborne, for example). So all you’re saying is this tune is similar to a lot of other ones. So let’s go with Half Note = 156. Or hell, if we assume he’s feeling this in 4/8, then in 4/4 the quarter note actually WOULD be 156. So, you know, whatever. Lol. Enjoy the music, I think is the moral of the story. It’s good shit.

    • @Jordarr8994

    Certain parts of this remind me of Brubeck, where he got way out on the rhythmic sense (4:56), while the drummer kept the train on the tracks; then everybody gets back together as the station comes into view. Extremely adventuresome! Meldhau has a kind of a weird rubato in the middle of a swinging monster.This is FREEWHEELLIN'

      Sorry, meant the #9. Seems like he's using the Bb7#9 as a kind of pedal throughout the A section, giving the whole thing a very bluesy sound. In fact he finishes the whole solo on an Ab - the b7 of Bb.

      Those are just telling you what beat some of the notes should fall on to help you get a sense of how that weird rhythm should go. So the 3 above the g in measure 100 is telling you that the g falls on beat 3, and the 4a above the f in measure 100 is telling you to land on that f on the and of beat 4, and vice versa👍

    This is a Charlie Parker composition...yet someone else's name is in the spot that is reserved for the composer.
    Everyone is mentioned EXCEPT the composer...UNACCEPTABLE!

    • @vova47
      @vova47 8 років тому +10

      +haroun elnil Yes, and while we're at it, let's not forget to give a credit to the REAL composer of this tune - I Got Rhythm - George Gershwin.
      Strictly speaking, Anthropology is just a variation on that song.

    • @haroun4165
      @haroun4165 8 років тому +4

      He didn't play 'I've got Rhythm', he played the Parker song. The copyright would read 'Anthropology'.
      If you want to practice law...get a license...

    • @vova47
      @vova47 8 років тому +13

      Nobody talked about copyright or law,so there's no need to be rude. You can't copyright harmony of the tune, only melody, so legally you're correct. But the tune and solos are based on a harmony and form written by Gershwin and without him there wouldn't be Anthropology or many other jazz lines using these chord changes. That's all I meant, ok?

    • @haroun4165
      @haroun4165 8 років тому +3

      There are only two things that the ALL the musicians in a band have on common...the tempo and the melody...NOT the harmony!
      By convention there is a place on the music for the composer's name. Just like meter and key. It's on every piece of music you've ever seen.
      The pianist could have just broken in playing running chords, but he didn't he chose to play Charlie Parker's melody. On the recording, that fact must be properly documented.
      ...and it was NOT properly documented on the music.
      Good Day.

    • @vova47
      @vova47 8 років тому +6

      I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you don't seem to know the most basic thing about jazz. In jazz we improvise on harmony of the tune and NOT on melody.The tempo is also optional and is usually decided by the leader.
      Bud chose to play this particular Parker' "line" because it's a good one and he liked it, but he and his trio still improvised on "I Got Rhythm" chord changes originated by George Gershwin.
      That's that in a nutshell!......
      On the second matter, I fully agree with you that composers (Parker and Dizzy Gillespie*s) names should have been stated and share in your disgust over the people responsible for failing to do so. We have no argument on this account.
      Good Day to you as well!
