We used to have a huge car port and when any bird got caught in it. My husband used to go in and just put his finger down and those darn birds would sit on his finger and get a ride outside. I saw him do this with Robins and Hummingbirds. I think birds are smarter than we know and they grew to know my husband. Even the Martins when they came back would raise such a fuss until he put their house back up in Spring. The hummers would buzz around the back pockets of his blue jeans when he hung a feeder up. It was comical to watch. We backed against a forest area beside Lake Erie so we had lots of birds. Even a Carolina Wren nestled in the car port one Summer. That was fun to watch and we had 4 fledglings. We loved our birds and they loved us back.
I been putting up hummingbird feeders since 1990 for the Ruby-Throated, I notice they come back in April to the same spot the feeder was last summer before, some years I didn't have it up in time but they came to the exact spot. I have Purple Martins also and Tree Swallows such amazing Swallows to have.
Thank you! I watched this video and went and picked some flowers and was able to get the poor little hummingbird to suck on the flowers as I slowly walked toward the open window. It was a three hour ordeal and I was worried it was going to die. Your video saved him!!!! Thank you 💖
@@MarksBackyardBirds Took several hours; got a small ladder, hung one hummingbird feeder on it in garage doorway........finally it flew out......Happy it made it out :)
We tried everything, all day, even hanging the feeder didn't work at first. Finally at dark we had to give up. We had to close the garage to avoid any theft. I got up the next morning thinking he was going to be dead. When I went in the garage he was still flying up high as he had all day the previous day. What worked was, after 22 hours, the next morning I played a you tube sound video of humming bird sounds and set the phone near the hanging feeder. The sun was at a perfect angle shinning at the glass feeder and the sounds of hummingbirds chirping, finally worked. I can't believe that bird lasted that long.
Hi Mark, had a question. How do you get an aggressive hummer to stop guarding the feeder? We have one guarding 3 of the 4 feeders we have out. Thanks for any help you can give. Sincerely Jeff
Hi Jeff, It is a tough situation. The only real solution I have found is by breaking his or her sightline to the other feeders. Front yard/back yard of a hedgerow of trees or bushes. It is just what they do. Fortunately, the dominant birds are typically the first to leave in the late summer so things should settle down.
What does it mean when a hummingbird guards the feeder and doesn’t allow other birds to drink? It’s 105 degrees where I am and this little bully is not sharing. Please help 🙏🏽
During late summer, hummingbirds are trying to fatten up as much as possible for their migration south. Aggressive birds dominate feeders to "hog" the available food supply. Younger birds don't know the routine yet so they get bullied.
When a hummingbird went inside my church, I had to take it where there was light (that was my kitchen) and wait for it to tire out. Once it was tired, I gently picked it up and set it free outside. I think I'll ask my church to invest in a hummingbird feeder for cases like this.
Little hummingbird has been stuck in our garage for hours. He’s exhausted. Made it as dark as possible. Leaving one garage door open for light. Little guy will not look down. Keeps hitting his head on the ceiling. Any last ditch suggestions? We are determined to save him.
Wrens are famous for singing 365. I haven't heard a House Wren lately so I think they have moved out of our area but the Carolina Wrens are singing every morning.
I'm leaving for 3 days and the temperature is supposed to be around 80° my question is would it be okay to leave a hummingbird feeder out for three days in the shade or is that temperature too hot to leave it out for three days? I clean it everyday when the temperature is 90 degrees and above.
@@beckyclanton8033 it will likely settle down somewhere and sleep for the night. You can pick them up while they or sleeping or make sure a door is open in the morning
@@MarksBackyardBirds they're still working on getting it out, unfortunately. Apparently it has been in the store for the past 2 days, the problem is there's flowers inside the store that the hummingbird has been feeding on so he hasn't gotten tired enough yet to settle down! They are trying to use a net to capture it I warned him to be super super careful because of how fragile they are. The manager said that they will open up the doors in the morning when the sun comes up, but there's no way that they can turn off all of the lights in the entire store 😮💨
Hummingbird one time came in my house investigating artificial hanging fruit basket, cut all lights off, just open the door they will fly out, same as the garage will work.
Great tips and advice Mark!! Thank you!!!

I'm trying to create something of the same.
We were near Lake Erie shore.@@annette2326
So glad I found this video. It worked! Hung a feeder in the doorway and within 10 minutes the hummingbird was out!

Oh My! 😮And I was just worried about bats, in the fall. Thank you, Mark. I've never heard of this.
It happens more than you would think.
Great info. Thanks so much

Have you tried placing a hummingbird feeder in the doorway? Hope he makes it.
Off topic ,but why are the house wrens so vocal this time of year in the morning ,as the others are quieting down.

@MarksBackyardBirds Sorry I forgot to say I live in New Jersey, if that factors in. But hey we're enjoying it and thanks for a quick response.
Is there a way to share pictures of birds with you
@@alnbravo3159 absolutely. You can send them to my email at mark@backyardbirdcenter.com
i got one stuck in a screen in porch and put a feeder right outside but it just kept on trying to go through the screen. what should i do?
Is the feeder in the open doorway of the porch?

You should be ok to leave it out for that length of time at that temperature.
What if it’s dark outside now

It should work but some times they can be incredibly frustrating and just not go out the obvious way.
