Wow what a store! The desire for vintage instruments makes me chuckle though. I started playing in 1973 and you could find used Fender precision and Jazz basses hanging on the wall for a couple hundred dollars used and maybe 400 new (not cheap but within reach). We didn't think anything of it, they were just used basses. It's not like we looked at them and said "wow future museum pieces". In fact there were a lot of bad ones. Warped and twisted necks were more common than you'd think. You get so much instrument for so little money nowadays. You youngsters are lucky.
The Dusenburg was the most intriguing to me, never seen one of those before. Had you not thrown that curveball in at the end I would’ve said the blue p bass
That Duesenberg has such a warm and around tone. I think it was the perfect choice with the acoustic guitars you were playing with. The truth is any of them would have sounded great. You, Rhett and Roofman have such a great vibe and sound together.
I loved the Suhr for the traditional basses you tried out in this video. But that Duesenberg has not only great tone but is paired with stunning aesthetics.
The Duesenberg sounds and looks amazing, if I had the 3k in my pocket on that day, I probably woudn't have left the shop without it =) The white Pbass also was super nice, Thanks for sharing
If you want a vintage feel on a new bass neck, wire wool does a perfect job of relicing as many years as you want. I know some people get their necks sanded but I used a very fine grade wire wool to create a lovely satin finish rather than super vintage feel on the back of my classic StingRay's high gloss neck. So much nicer, smooth as silk and importantly, no scratches! No need to remove strings or neck ☝
The duesenberg is sweeeet. Love that pickup combination. Seems like you could dial in tones reminiscent of a hoff or a tbird, plus an added bonus of some p sounds with the middle pickup. Since I too, own a jazz and a p, that would for sure be my pick. Nice video Mr. Phil
Wow, I have actually bought this particular '64 Jazz bass (0:47) 2 weeks ago! Such a great bass! I haven't realised Philip has played it as well when I pulled the trigger 😀
My fave bass of all time is a P Bass. A close second would be the Hofner violin bass. That being said, when I was shopping for my most recent bass, I decided to try something different and bought a Mustang bass. Love the combination of P Bass pickup-placement with the short scale. Best of both worlds.
As a guitar player who has been trolling your bass channel since day one, after all of the great advice you give all along the way, I would have to choose the Pro II as I feel like I could not walk by that Bass without picking it up. That blue is so striking.
So much fun to go into a room full of basses and pick one. To answer your question, I'd pick the one that suited the song and how I was going to play it. Love a Jazz but that's not what would have fit that song. To my ears the Duesenberg lacked a distinct personality despite the variations. Didn't care for the Suhr. The Hofner has tons of personality but not right for that song. The White Falcon was soft and mellow and the P fits most anywhere. Either of those would have worked but since your approach was to play whole notes with sustain, I'd recommend the P.
Guitar player here so not super knowledgable on bass tone but that hofner has such a distinct sound and for me that tone is super recognizable if you know what i mean. But that duesenberg was awesome with how many tone options you get with the switching and was really cool looking also. Those custom shops are cool but at the end of the day hearing all these different basses at different price ranges the custom shops were kind of forgettable.
I’m a p bass guy first & foremost but these were all nice basses. I have a Pensa Suhr jazz bass formerly owned by Lloyd Cole & can attest to the quality of their builds.
Cool beans, I bought a Dusenberg D-Caster electric guitar on a whim some 10 years ago at a night sale here in Stockholm and I'm not even a guitarist :P Just fell in love with the extremely low action, cool looks and this weird chorus type spring loaded rod thing.
I like the Hofner, because I like a short scale (guitarist), but the Duesenberg sounded cool and didn't look as big as a P-bass (plus I already have a decent short scale).
For me, the Duesenberg - it won me over with the sound, little of it I may have heard. The versatility seems huge, too. And it came as a surprise, because I'm a P-bass fan myself, so I was 100% sure I'd choose the miami blue Precision Pro 2. Up until you started playing the Duesenberg, I was still choosing the miami blue P-bass.
Triton is a great bass, own that same gold one. You didn't mention the other switch on the Triton that changes whether the pickups run serial or parallel giving you an even further range of sounds. Did they not have the Duesenberg Motown (semi-hollow, also with 3 single coil pick ups) to try? Both fantastic instruments, extremely well made. I happen to be a big fan of the White Falcon as well (again, proud owner)...I forgot what you called it in the video but the gold fleck is called the binding. For me, the Hofner doesn't have a hope in hell competing with any of the afore mentioned basses & honestly compared to the others, when you sat down with it, it looked more like a toy or "my first bass" from Sears or JC Penny (in an alternate universe where they still exist). Lastly, rather than either Fender model I'd go with a Thunderbird every time! So...did you go home with one & if so, which did you decide upon? Tip: If you ever come across the Washburn AB-40 give it a look, great semi-hollows from late 80's/early 90's, even the step down AB-20 is also worth checking out (there's also a Stu Hamm version of the AB-40 btw).
I would have picked the Duesenberg bass too. I liked the tone of that bass with all the settings. It sounded like something I could get comfortable with quickly, and the overall look of the bass was killer.
What a fantastic music store! (great video as well!) I'd probably go with the custom shop P Bass, but man that Duesenberg was way cool too. (and sounded amazing)
I picked up a demo Hofner Cotemporary Club bass bass and refuse to sell it. It's a one trick pony but damn that trick is great. German pickups and center block so you can play it loud!
@@philipconradmusic - If Fender sends you some basses to check out, I would love to see your demo/ review / thoughts on the American Vintage II series Ps and Js.
Hi Ryan! Thanks for watching. I recorded direct into a recording interface through a nice preamp. All the sonic info is there; maybe try some different speakers or headphones? Glad to have you here! ⚡️
Ill echo that comment. Playing audio is incredibly low. Even with headphones, if you crank the volume to hear the playing, the talking audio comes in and blows your head off. Just a big volume contrast. Love your vids
The Hofner sounds great, but I enjoy 34" scale and a wider body. The Duesenberg does sound great, but I always go back to my 68 and 73 telecaster basses.
I'm partial to the Am Pro II P-Bass, but that's partially because it's what I play currently (different finish, but the same bass). The Dusenberg looks amazing and very versatile. I'm curious if it's active or passive (and I'm too lazy to look it up right now). I understand the love for Hofners, but I just don't like how they feel in my hands. It may just be the arch top on the body that feels weird for me.
Hope you and the EB-0 find your way back to one another! I love that as a complement to your other go-tos. For me overall, if it can’t be a vintage P, gotta be the FCS P - although I might go for Journeyman rather than Heavy on the relic. (I love the J sound but I’m happy with my Rumblefish)
@@philipconradmusic I was hoping they’d have a Burns bass there for you to play because I’ve been kinda fixated on burns lately … but with the three pickups I think the Duesenberg was definitely in the ballpark!
My choice from a visual standpoint would be the Dusenberg (a ‘29 Dussenberg auto is also a beautiful thing), but my question is how comfortable is it compared to the Fenders, probably the most comfortable design for playing. I play a fretless Elrick, which I love and am particularity partially to fretless basses in general.
Great question. All I can say, is while I was playing it I never thought about it being uncomfortable, just that I liked it, which I think speaks for itself. Thanks for watching! ⚡️
It's a hard call. Ideally you would have them all on a rack changing to suit the song and the mood...... I say as I'm noodling in my bedroom on my €118 Harley Benton bass 🤣 Just to suit my tastes the Custom Shop Jazz, but like you suggested Mr Conrad, taking the ashtrays off and leaving them somewhere safe for the hand to float between the pickup positions. Thanks for the video btw.
That Duesenberg looked and sounded fantastic, but (through good headphones in a not quite silent office) I was hard pressed to hear any difference between the different positions.
Very cool video! Thanks! As for your question on which basses I would prefer, yeah, I'm not really into the whole reliced thing. It'd be like finding a mint vintage car and taking rocks and hammers to it. Now a custom shop reproduction of a brand new vintage piece, might be appealing, but other than the snob factor, will it really play or sound better than a new American Pro II? I'm doubtful. Plus, I have a Pro II P-bass in Olympic White, tort pick guard, and rosewood fretboard, and I love it! The thing is gorgeous, sounds great, and any relicing is going to be done by me over years of play. And to me, that's priceless. I do aspire to own a hollow body, but not a Gretch. They're gorgeous, but they feel cheap to me. I'll hold out for a Gibson Midtown or a Guild Starfire, old or knew. Lastly, my favorite bass you held up - it's got to be the EB3. I love the SG Bass. They look awesome, and, at least in the hands of Jack Bruce, sound like nothing else. Some day, for sure. Looking forward to the next great vid!
The Duesenberg. Everyone has a P-bass & a Jazz bass, Fender or copy or almost a copy wit ha different headstock but not even I have a 3-pickup bass in my collection and its green, which I also haven't got - well not yet. However all the basses you tried were well outside my price range, it does look like a really cool shop but a trip to Basses R Us would be more relevant to me, that said the trip was worthwhile if only to see the Duesenberg, such a lovely look. I assume its not the same company that made the classic cars?
Hi Philip, If you and your band ever play gigs in Holland or the area in the future and you don’t want or can’t bring your own bass, you are free to use one of my P’s or my Guild Starfire or Höfner CT Club basses. No worries. 🖖
I play guitar and i LOVE relic to the point i even tried DIY. Not to the best result but anyways it was fun. OMG that plastic Gretsch bass skirt is nasty. Duesenberg is the winner IMHO (I habe a Starplayer 2 from 96) , followed by Fender.
I'm totally a Fender J or P but the Gretch sounded good. I don't think it looks comfortable though. I have one short scale, my first bass a 66 Gibson EB-0 that I love playing but it's kind of retired. It seems like ever bass player has some kind of Beatle bass. My favorite bass is my 75 Fender j, I lean towards Jazz basses I think they are more versatile. The 64 J is my choice, love the sound.
The ‘64 Jazz was great! It had a vibe. Jazz basses imo sound best with really old roundwounds instead of flats. I’m really a P bass person, and I’ve been fighting jazzbasses (their tone) for years and years, especially live. I mostly want to use the neck or both pickups; never the ‘Jaco tone’ with the bridge pickup solood. That fight with the Jazz got me to the plan for ‘23: only play my ‘71 Jazz and nothing else: like a marriage for a year, 😂. What is a little bit strange, is the ‘64 CS Jazz had stack knobs. That’s strange..., because these are ‘61 to early ‘62 specs. I guess you might love a Höfner Club bass. Doesn’t have to be a German made one, the HCT does the same job. The Club is easier to play than the Beatle bass. Just put d’Addario black nylon strings on it, and enjoy! 🖖
Another great video! How was the sound of the basses recorded? You captured amazing sound for those basses in settings that I wouldn’t expect an audio interface.
Thanks! I am using a di with a battery powered zoom recorder (F6). Want you to be able to hear the real bass and not just a practice amp in a small room ⚡️
Hi Nelson! I understand your opinion. They are high quality designs with premium printing, and the cost to create and ship them is not insignificant. I feel confident they are priced appropriately 🤘
The Duesenberg is my favorite. I admit I am jaded. I love the sound of a fender bass, but I can not connect to them at all. Personally, I am playing a Reverend Meraccoli 5 and love the big beefy tone.
I was hearing a fender rumble in the room, BUT you are hearing a di into my zoom recorder. I had the origin effects bassrig set to very clean as the di, but maybe a tiny bit of saturation if I remember correctly ⚡️
I haven't been in market for a while, but I am shocked that and American professional costs 2000$, Fender are getting really pricey, I bought my American standard second hand for something like 800$ second hand, just a few years ago.
The custom shop 64 jazz - I feel quite conflicted about these artificially aged models. They do look really cool but at the same time it’s all fake which is quite odd to me. I would also remove those covers - they would be immediately annoying :-) But if I had the money that is the one I would go for out of this selection, but the Dusenburg is also very interesting

7:05 duesenberg ❤
Anyone see the price of the Duesenburg?
Love the channel, love your content, love the Höfner....but the prices for your merch are far too hefty dude!
Hi Nelson! I understand your opinion. They are high quality designs with premium printing, and the cost to create and ship them is not insignificant. I feel confident they are priced appropriately 🤘
Tough decision, but I liked the two Fender Custom Shop P basses and Dusenburg the best.
Great choices! ⚡️
The Duesenberg is my favorite. I admit I am jaded. I love the sound of a fender bass, but I can not connect to them at all. Personally, I am playing a Reverend Meraccoli 5 and love the big beefy tone.
The dusenberg or the second relic p bass.
What amp were you using? All basses seem to have a very nice growl.
I was hearing a fender rumble in the room, BUT you are hearing a di into my zoom recorder. I had the origin effects bassrig set to very clean as the di, but maybe a tiny bit of saturation if I remember correctly ⚡️
It's a toss up between the Suhr Classic J and the Pro II P for me.😊
Great choices!
I gotta say the EB0 was the one for me. But im not the one buying it bro. Duesenburg definitely has a wide tonal palette
That gold top is a Deusy!
Hahah nicely done ⚡️
The Doose 🤙🏽
I would have liked to hear the hollow bodies played closer to the neck.
The Duesenburg, or the Custom P... The P because.. it's a P ;-) And the Duesenburg because it looks so damn cool!
Nice!!
Dusenburg!
Loved the Duesenberg, so unique! And easy on the eyes.
The Hofner
I haven't been in market for a while, but I am shocked that and American professional costs 2000$, Fender are getting really pricey, I bought my American standard second hand for something like 800$ second hand, just a few years ago.
The custom shop 64 jazz - I feel quite conflicted about these artificially aged models.
They do look really cool but at the same time it’s all fake which is quite odd to me.
I would also remove those covers - they would be immediately annoying :-) But if I had the money that is the one I would go for out of this selection, but the Dusenburg is also very interesting
Not much of a Fender fan, like the more modern styles, Wal, Warwick, Jackson, Sterling, Ernie Ball, Spector. The Duesenberg hands down!
Nice!
Isn't that Gibson an EB-3? if that's an actual 69, that price is nice!
I think you are right! The two pickups make me think it is a 3. Good eye ⚡️
Hofner for me love that thump 🤤
Nice!
Custom shop P Bass.....❤❤💯
I am a Hofner guy 100%, but I use rounds on them.
Nice! ⚡️
The custom p
That one was pretty sweet ⚡️
That's an EB3
CS P-Bass! 💯💯💯🤪🤪🤪👍
Cool store, too bad they charge a massive premium over other shops.
