Also only connecting whole areas only to the highway simply does not work. More interconnections between areas are needed...
At 7:00 I believe the cars were despawning on the roundabout because you had not changed the lanes when you changed the direction of the one way road. Therefore on the roundabout the cars were unable to enter the loop as the lanes did not allow for it and every vehicle who wanted to enter the loop suddenly could not reach their destination anymore.
Love watching your fix videos of fan cities when they follow your advice and tips however miss small things and you fix it up. Is soothing to watch and im sure it is more calming to you 😂
@7:18, the first road in the round-about didn't allow to turn right, so it was impossible to enter. They were despawning since it didn't exist any path for them. You can see the arrow on the road only shows straight forward.
At 17:00 when dealing with the toll booths I found to speed up traffic significantly you turn on the policy for the auto tolls and you set the speed limit on the toll to the same as the highway and it doesn't congest it up.
RE: Why traffic doesn't react to changes - I think the game determines the path a vehicle will take at "x" distance from interchanges, and when we make major changes, like in the One Way situation in this video, only the vehicles that are outside the "x" distance actually see the change, and are able to make the new turn. I have seen this behavior a lot while modifying my Bunker city to compensate for changes .. :D
7:12 Fixing traffic by having them all drive into the void 😂 The problem was the lane arrows -- they'd been manually touched before for "one goes off", so were only straight-on at the junction where things were coming in before. Upgrading the roads reset all the arrows, which is why it fixed it.
My experience with connecting the metro loops is that one needs to keep an eye on those stations. If the density of the trains in the loop is high enough every "infraction" from the connecting train will have a knock-on effect, throwing the timing and spacings off and causing backups that won't go away. Solution: never put more than 2 lines in one direction, in other words keep the actual stops from overlaping (applicable to busses too). May be trickiy if following the CW/CCW rule. Idealy one wouldn't use the connecting lines but make the loops "touch" instead.
Hey Biffa, just a small correction on your one lane change. You need to do it in two layers both sides so that cars can switch two lanes through two nodes. So they go from lane 1 to lane 2 on the first node, then lane 2 to lane 3 on the second node. Then on the third and fourth node you do it the other way around.
7:13 I also get that sometimes, I think it may be a bug in trafic manager or it's interaction with other mods or assets. It usually goes away after some time, if not the clear traffic button usually fixes the issue for me, but I dislike that cause all my public transport respawns at the depots.
Hey Biffa, I have some advice with your roundabouts. I've noticed that you have a tendency to set the right lane to go off the roundabout and the other lanes to just keep going straight. I've noted that this is a bad practice with roundabouts. What I've done with a lot of my roundabouts is to set EVERY lane to be able to move off the roundabout at some point. This practice ensures that cars won't lane switch too often [edit|"AT ALL"] on a roundabout. So no inner lanes on a roundabout that can never exit, they're essentially pointless. Of course, this doesn't matter on roundabouts with little to basically no traffic on them but it's ideal on bigger or busier roundabouts. I'd honestly like to hear about how you prefer to set them up. Because I still don't 100% understand how you like to setup the lanes. Anyways cya m8! Have a good #biffaday!
Another thing that could greatly help people with traffic is not building sprawling cities. Which means dont make a huge residential, business, industry, areas separated from each other. Mix them together. Use business area as a spacer for industrial section. Helps with noise pollution
07:30 i think the cars were despawning on the roundabout because of a lane arrow on he roundabout was saying straight on.. not 100% sure but i think thats what it was
haven't been playing strategy games since SimCity 2000 and Total Annihilation... but I watched this vid from beginning to end. fascinating. might wanna give the game a shot. cheers!
A lot of the issues here where honestly road hierarchy issues with improper road sizes for a given application, (no offence to the owner btw, it's a fairly advanced concept and Bifa hasn't really done an adequate video on it, merely touched on it a little here and there across a lot of videos), plus a few little bits of roads configured weird.
i have this city that had a population of 102k, my traffic flow was at 1% and my population fell to 58k. that was yesterday. i have worked all day now and have managed to get the traffic flow back to 76% and the population is now 106k. without you and your tips, biffa. it wouldn't have happened, thank you
2:20 I think the people coming over the roundabout are then wanting to go back to the roundabout so you could have put a small roundabout at the end of the Street and stop them fr making left turns
One thing that I do that I haven't seen elsewhere is to ban trucks from the inner lane(s) of highways with 3 or more lanes. It's a common practice on US highways and stops those silly one lane queues. Since trucks run at slower speeds than cars, traffic can clear faster. It also cuts down on trucks blocking traffic with multi lane changes that block the road.
Old video, but still want to comment. At 20:26 there is probably problem for people turning right from the bottom, like they can't access the top most lane of the main road in time to hit their exit after the intersection so they go around the roundabout instead. As there are so many lane change restrictions on that highway. You can see that the they mostly trucks from bottom right.
I had the same problem with cars despawning after applying changes to a road like at 7:20. I think thats caused by huge amounts of cars being affected through the change so the game is too slow in recalculating the routes for all of them and thus lets them despawn. I had it on a highway on a 300k citizens map and it took several minutes or a save & load game to make them keep driving again. It even seemed to effect the calculating of routes for new spawned cars.. Dunno why :D
The biggest problem here is that cars driving on the right side should minimize doing left turns. Because they're basically crossing intersections that blocks other cars to move especially when there's traffic congestion
The issue with vehicles disappearing after upgrading/changing roads is an issue I occasionally get, basically somewhere in the city one of the nodes breaks which causes despawning with TMPE, you need to them run the broken node detector mod to find the broken node and fix it.
Why can't they turn left at 20:50 ? Is it a lane switching problem? Or vehicle restriction? Those intersections have lanes to make a left turn ... Very odd
Biffa the trucks using the roundabout and going all the way back up the highway was the lane management on the toll booth that you did, stopping them lane switching so they couldn't come off on the slip lane so the trucks were carrying on down to the roundabout to come all the way back up and then come off.
Using the small 4 lane roads in industry is great; you can use traffic manager to disable all turns at the end of the "stopping lane," so vehicles stopping for industry don't block through traffic
Its stuff like this that made me sub to you biffa you took a persons city that had everything done right and the traffic was still bad and you made it work. I can just imagine my self at my odds end trying to fix my city following what you do and it still not working and honest to god thinking i need biffa to take a look at this.
20:28 I'd love to know what's going on with the trucks here. The vast majority are coming from the south to head east (as we look at it) yet they don't take the slip road that would go directly there, but instead they all go to that roundabout way over to the west. You do see a few vehicles take that slip road so it's connected and working, so... what the heck?? Something weird with the speed limit on that slip lane maybe...? Or something with the lane switching rules that means they can't get to the exit they need if they get on the highway via the slip lane? If that was fixed it would clear up a huge amount of the traffic into that roundabout.
its because he did some lane management on the toll booth incorrectly which meant that they couldn't switch lanes to come off on the slip lane so the trucks were carrying on down to the roundabout to come all the way back up and then come off.
Ah it's not the toll booths, it's at 21:35 the no-lane-switching on the bridge. Every node has no lane switching set, so if they get on the highway at that slip lane, they have no choice but to leave it at the first junction, but they want to go on to the second one. If they had one node where they could pull out by even one lane, they could use the slip lane to reach that industry area and wouldn't need to go via the roundabout to get in an outside lane past that junction. (Not saying the toll booth lane management is perfect either but that's right at the city limits and that's not where the trucks are coming from.)
In fact I think it's both - the toll booth stops trucks coming into the city from getting there, and the bridge stops those coming up from the south in that same traffic flow view at 20:50 so it's funnelling everything from BOTH directions into that one roundabout!
Most of this cities could be fixed by adding more connections to increase the alternatives for the cars to go from a to b. That way traffic would spread evenly instead of concentrating in those bottlenecks. More highways exits and entrances and more connections between districts (several minor roads for local commute will lighten the highway traffic for example). Then, you spend far less time doing "efficient" intersections.
I experienced something weird in my city.. Putting in a roundabout caused worse traffic! I've created a city that's just a big grid, divided into relatively small blocks, with a couple 4 lane roads going through the middle, both vertically and horizontally, meeting up in a crossroad. I don't have any roundabouts in the grid. But I noticed some traffic buildup around the big crossroad, and decided to try a roundabout. But that made everything 10 times worse! Now the cars seem to avoid the roundabout, and use the smaller 2-lanes going parallel with the 4-lane, which is just causing much larger buildup of traffic, because those roads of course has less capacity. I went back to before I created the roundabout, and this time I tried upgrading the 4-lane to a 6-lane, and something similar happened again! The cars seems to be avoiding the 6-lane (almost no traffic there at all) and instead use the small 2-lanes going parallel... I don't get it. This exact thing happened in another city, where as soon as I upgraded a road to 6-lane the cars turned off at the first opportunity and instead used other roads, with less capacity.. Anyone else experience this? I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.
A challenge Bifa: could you fix a city feel like using TM:PE? It’s that I think it’s cheating to tell which nodes you can and when you can’t change lanes (since in real life that’s not possible, i.e. you take realism out). That is, building alternative roads, smoother intersections ...
A couple of reasons; realism, used to doing it, wanting to convert it to a city with sustainable economy (possibly turning off infinite money), or Biffa turned infinite money on (unlikely).
Even with infinite money you can still have a budget with a balance. I play with infinite money but I still try to keep myself in the positive. You still gain and lose money, you just have an infinite pool.

Kid: Biffa, my nose feels stuffy.
Biffa: Ah yes that’s all chocka block.
The issue here was no right turns allowed at the first roundabout exit.
11:34 at least he had one of the give way signs
Lesson: If something is not working, r o u n d a b o u t
07:30 i think the cars were despawning on the roundabout because of a lane arrow on he roundabout was saying straight on.. not 100% sure but i think thats what it was
Ah those interchanges where you can't turnaround! Needs an updated version where you can (or at least a roundabout off every exit :D )
0:22 anyone else notice the phallic intersection or is it just me 😂
She got him good...
😄
IT'S A PAIR OF SCISSORS!!
Should of been in the Beaver district.
@@mgunter Should HAVE been. Seriously.
haven't been playing strategy games since SimCity 2000 and Total Annihilation... but I watched this vid from beginning to end. fascinating. might wanna give the game a shot.
I normally am a coffee drinker, but I'm home sick with a head cold /flu, so I'm drinking tea instead. This video is my density... I mean, my destiny.
Feel better soon 😁👍
i have this city that had a population of 102k, my traffic flow was at 1% and my population fell to 58k. that was yesterday. i have worked all day now and have managed to get the traffic flow back to 76% and the population is now 106k. without you and your tips, biffa. it wouldn't have happened, thank you
👍
2:20 I think the people coming over the roundabout are then wanting to go back to the roundabout so you could have put a small roundabout at the end of the Street and stop them fr making left turns
One thing that I do that I haven't seen elsewhere is to ban trucks from the inner lane(s) of highways with 3 or more lanes. It's a common practice on US highways and stops those silly one lane queues. Since trucks run at slower speeds than cars, traffic can clear faster. It also cuts down on trucks blocking traffic with multi lane changes that block the road.
Interesting idea 🤔
22:54 Homer, is that you?
Very interesting one compared to normal fixes
Hah, just you wait till i gather the courage to send you my city :p
Nothing to be nervous about. My cities have been bad, looked awful, bad economy or all three. Everyone has some problems. :-)
Brilliant as ever Biffa
Biffa, king of weird-a-bouts. Cool video, keep it up
Topic of this episode: Butterfly Effect in C:S
The person who made the city just put roads and building everywhere even skyscrapers in farm industries
Honestly since i do listen to you, i never have to send in my cities lol 75% + everytime, Thank You!
Very odd
Great work Biffa!
Biffa the trucks using the roundabout and going all the way back up the highway was the lane management on the toll booth that you did, stopping them lane switching so they couldn't come off on the slip lane so the trucks were carrying on down to the roundabout to come all the way back up and then come off.
wow Great fix Mr Biff.,, with only one roundabout pretty much fixed this city mental.. GG xx
smart tip when SOS-cars cant get thru traffic:
add a lane and make so only SOS-cars can go there!
Biffa, if this is smart
Well it sounds smart! :-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines YES I KNEW IT
Using the small 4 lane roads in industry is great; you can use traffic manager to disable all turns at the end of the "stopping lane," so vehicles stopping for industry don't block through traffic
Great idea 👍
So I sit at my computer yelling "ROUNDABOUT' at seemingly random intervals. I'm fairly certain my family thinks I'm insane at this point.
😁
Great job Biffa now its tea time
Most of this cities could be fixed by adding more connections to increase the alternatives for the cars to go from a to b.
Awesome stuff! Keep this series up.
I really enjoyed this episode of more advanced solutions
Very nicely done 👍
Lane mathematics and I never believed my teacher when she told a day would come I'd need math!
One thing that I noticed couple video's ago is that Biffa isn't using bikelanes. I think bikelanes will also helps a lot to reduce your traffic
A challenge Bifa: could you fix a city feel like using TM:PE? It’s that I think it’s cheating to tell which nodes you can and when you can’t change lanes (since in real life that’s not possible, i.e. you take realism out). That is, building alternative roads, smoother intersections ...
I love your vids keep up the amazing work ❤❤💪💪
Thanks 😁
I love the smile that I can hear in your voice :)
I will never understand why any city with infinite money has a toll road.
I don't know why it was on infinity money I never turned it on.
@@Sweetlyevil18 If so, then Biffa most likely did something. He also said he disabled autosaves in another comment.
I find that when the cars do that weird despawning thing, just use the move it mod to move the road slightly and it doesn't happen anymore.
Yes Biff 👍🏼👏🏼
