For decades I've had a pair of 10" no name slip joints that are just the thing now & again... for all the reasons you mention. They are springy though. Also have a pair of Snap-On's pricy 3 position 10" slip joints... the 49ACF, who's teeth are almost too aggressive; but in reality use the cheap no names more. Another use for the no names is the (round Weber) BBQ... I load most of the coals & cook on one side. When flare up's happen, just rotate the grill with the long pliers to mitigate; works great!
