How Each Type is their Inferior Function

  • The life philosophy and drive of every type is ultimately embodied in the inferior function. Things I missed: ENFPs have this very traditional flavor to them, as if their life mission is to get people grounded to values. ExFJs are ultimately the smoothest operators when it comes to people (in this respect, stronger in Ti than Ti-doms). ExTJs can be very concerned about the subject of morality, and their Te works can express that in humanitarian ways. IxTPs almost have this puppy-dog kind of Fe, that is what I mean by Fe. INxJs can get kind of caught up addressing matters about how one needs to "get ahead" to be successful and survive in this world and how this is the unfortunate reality, whereas other types may be less concerned about this.

This is brilliant. It's almost like each type paradoxically achieves a goal by seeming to do the opposite. Now I think I can see what my Te has been up to all these years, lol! Even though the individual steps that I, as an INFP, take to get to a goal may look anything but logical and organized along the way, I feel a sober commitment to the goal and a strong drive to accomplish it.. Then when the goal is accomplished and I look back on it, I can see how the goofy-looking path I took was actually straight and efficient. Even if I couldn't explain it at the time, I had an underlying feeling that this is what would WORK.

So, I was making a video one day, and began by talking about Se, it being so prevalent, and until I saw this video of yours, I didn't understand why I would start and seemingly have so much more to say about my inferior function, even though I did understand what an important part it plays in my life. And I see your point and examples of my tendency and desires and ability with Se showing up all the time. And it fits in well with my ambitions and the actions I am proud of, because it can also be a considerable challenge much of the time. Another awesome video, Leon, and always much appreciated.

I didn´t hear the part about Ti as an inferior for ENFJs and ESFJs. I even watched it a second time and couldn´t hear you talking about it. But I could guess what it is. I´m ENFJ and my brother is ESFJ and we both have very different perspectives on the world, but the same goal according to Fe as a leading function.
Normally both of us are proactive types, who seem to never rest. But when we are very relaxed or sometimes under stress can we enter a totally different level. We get pretty calm and somehow emotionless and just see all the logic in the situation and what the most reasonable thing to do is. I´m often very suprised how simple things can look from one moment to the other. It just hits me like a flash.
I find some truth in it: We as dominant Fe-users always want to be reasonable. I very often found myself in the struggle to find reasons for my value-based actions. I have very strong beliefs through Fe and Ni, which I consistently try to grounf in logic.

Striving towards a function because it's your weakest and thus most illusive and attractive function is something different than "ultimately being" that function.. Percentage wise, we use so little of our inferior function that it's quite illogical to claim that we "are" our inferior function.. even though it may sound romantic, it's just not true.

    • @hugoclarke3284

Look at it this way. If you strip the mind of its ego you are left with the id. It's primitive, ugly, and kind of innocent. We prefer to associate ourselves with the ego that branches out with all its colourful feathers, but the id is the old framework that everything else is built around. It's brain version 0.1.
That is not to say the inferior function is the id, but it's closer to the subconscious than the primary functions. It's more infantile, but it's closer to that fundamental core, the root if you will.
So I think the message here is that the inferior function is closer to our subconscious self than our main functions... well that's my reading of it anyway. However, if we're gonna get philosophical, I'd say the true self can only be the sum of its parts.

Thank you for your insights! I think, I agree. As an INTP and a socialist, what you're saying makes sense to me. I may appear cold and detached from "humanity" in general, but in the end I just want people to have similar chances in life and that no one is forgotten about, which seems like an FE indicator to me.

I also effectively believe that inferior function plays a crucial role in the life of a person that normally goes unnoticed (even from the first years of our life), but this has more to do with the fact that is where fear/insecurity exists. Then, this fear serves as a brake or restriction to make certain decisions, and at the same time serves as a motor when it is faced or tried to overcome. Since the "fears" for each type are different, this invariably leads to a set of different but recurring decisions for each type, changing only the context, setting, time, culture, etc. A small variation in the environment, in relationships and in our experiences when dealing with this function, can make the difference between one path and another, sometimes it can be the trigger to move forward and others to sink us even more.
I have the impression that the first and auxiliary functions respond to the "how", while the tertiary and the inferior the "why", all in constant feedback with the shadow functions.
Maintaining a harmonious relationship with this function is a task that can take a lifetime. It's interesting to see how different types deal with the same problems over and over again. What if we reincarnate with the same archetype for eternity? Wouldn't Nietzsche's eternal return come true? What if we reincarnate into another archetype for eternity? The eternal return would also be fulfilled given the recurring and repetitive nature of cognitive functions and archetypes. What would be the purpose of experiencing life for eternity? Increase collective consciousness? Perfect cognitive functions? So that?

I'd say I aim to be more Te in order to realize my Fi ideal vision. That ideal is often the best of the best so to get close to it, I need to be better with money, more effective in my career, utilize time more efficiently, all Te things. I don't think I AM Te, it's just what I view as necessary for my ultimate goal which is created by Fi. If I WERE Te, I'd simply be content to run a company, have successful businesses, get lots of things done, but those things are not actually the end goal for me. The end goal is freedom and being surrounded by what I care most about.

I think it's useful to think of the 1/4 slots as displaying a frequency ratio of 8 to 1. Considering the total number of hours in the day, and the exclusive nature of the two functions when in the 1/4 slot, you can think of Si as the ENTP's sitting on the stool between boxing rounds.

I totally agree with this, and have thought about this the same way for a while now. Its almost like every personality is a different recipe cooked with 8 different ingredients, the shadow functions are like spices that are hidden in the dish, but contribute massively to its flavour or something. I dono about this analogy, but its hard to explain

Love seeing INTP getting talk time (My type) in this video. I enjoyed it and I definitely think you have the Fe of INTPs down. I constantly tell my wife my little social rules and I start with a neutral standpoint that I want to help everyone and make their lives easier/better. But when the violate one of my social rules, I lose respect for them and will no longer go out of my way for someone.
I will hold the door for someone, I will be VERY mindful to be sure I am not in anyone's way or impeding them, I will heal in a video game or support... but if you barge in expecting people to move for you, or are loud and boisterous in public and disrupt everyone, or you mouth off in a game (even if it's not directed at me) you are completely cut off and I will never respect you again. It's a betrayal of societal social contracts.

Yeah I agree, realizing how truly thin skinned I am (INTP), and also seeing that I'm the last to know this. But there is another aspect of inferior Fe that sometimes come out -- it's fairly rare at this point, but I randomly experience an inexplicable love for all human beings from time to time. It makes no sense and as I said it doesn't happen very often. But this is the best I ever feel! Getting this feeling is what motivates me to adopt my "nice guy" role. Unfortunately it doesn't usually work, but that's a another discussion.

I like this. I've heard that the inferior function is the actualized version of self for each type, and I didn't think about it until I watched this video, but that's because of the relationships between the functions. For the primary to operate at its best, the inferior function has to be highly developed, otherwise the expression will be unbalanced.

Its funny how mbti continuously paradoxises itself (yeah its a word now) You thought the dominant function is what the type was strongest at? Val his language is also very wishy washy, every person can do everything and he is trying to notice where you can see that that is true
Im not sure that the 4th function would be more obvious when someone is stressed or rather happy
Ive found people dont tend to use 4th function, because they dont see the value in it (moment to moment) but havent checked to see if their 'deeper meaning' to life is reflective of 4th function
obviously if you compare 2 things you can rank them, and compare 2 things with those 1 will often have more extremes, this is the essence of mbti and how you can create your own models using other meta programs
      Si, Ni ordering perception
Se, Ne taking in information though perception
Ti, Te checking the reasons (doesnt have to be logical) of themself, group
Fi, Fe their own or group values

...I just had this conversationwith my SO where I really saw our lower function pairs coming out, and was reminded of your point in this video.
Him: "Let's meet up for a spontaneous move of passion! * unsubstle hormone related joke *" (Fi-Se)
Me: "Okay, here's this healthy homecooked meal I prepared for the occasion. Let me delight in your pleased reaction." (Si-Fe)
    Him: "Yay, surprise nom stuff."
Like, once you settle into a certain routine/comfortableness with someone
Other examples would include the local INFP who's pretty reserved with strangers but totally the responsible big bro everyone listens to, and an ENFP relative who always ends up in 'story swapping mode' once she gets comfy & relaxed. Then, of course, said story ends up consisting of how she dyed her neighbor's dog blue in her mischievous little girl years, reminding everyone who they're dealing with.

Okay, you too are sensitive and contemplating life, kind of a Byronic hero etc, yet my Te polar Makes it incredibly hard to continue the conversation (or even makes me hostile, i hide it) when they push Te and talk about idk computer science and how to make chairs not rub the floor... It hurts my brain... They say J types are strict and arranged, but for me the infp comes across as way more adult than I am in such a distinct way, even if they might be fucked up drug addicts, they just have that Te focus that i just can't deal with. Te is so hard to me that it might feel like Si for a sec and I might like it if it has to do with the Si agenda like googling the scientific consensus on what is a good skincare routine.. For some reason delta quadra people talking Te hurts my brain more than estp:s talking Te. It really is stigmatizing to be such a strong Te polar, it makes me look dumb and naive, always avoiding filling froms like a motherfucker even at 26... But I digress, sorry.

That was very interesting! I'll have to think about that for awhile. I'm an INTJ and it's true that I am going for a beautiful home and garden one day; but, I think I'm even more passionate about my business where I help people be true to their dreams and I help them express their dreams through their websites. By dreams, I mean their own passions and creativity and desires. I really want people to experience that happiness and self-actualization. It is what fuels me. The inferior Se is more of my relief. My NiTe goals are my reason for being and my Se is my source of relief or escape when I need a break but it's not my ultimate reason for being. You are correct that it is strong though. It HAS to be strong to balance out my passionate dominant/supporting function's pursuits. I need an equally strong ability to relax/escape.

I knew u was an INFP... xD
I realized this too, people kinda feel pleasure in their inferior functions, they jump between their type and their "opposite type" a lot, specially when they're not very self-controlling. It's like, a recurring addiction that can go too far and uncontrolled sometimes... That's kind of a love-hate relationship. You hate your inferior function, but you need it, you overindulge in it, you are a bit of it. Sometimes we hate people who have our inferior function as their dominant, but actually, we are a bit of that as well, we're just projecting our self-hate into them sometimes... But now always, though, sometimes it just happens that we really have reasons against the way they use it, but anyways... I guess we suppress it to be ourselves, but it gives us pleasure too in a way, it's kinda like... A psychological complex!

Basically, I think our inferior function is our balancing function. Mine (Se) brings me relief when I (an INTJ) need an escape from all my NiTe pursuits. Like I'll work for hours or days straight towards a goal and suddenly I'll just have to step away from my desk and go do something Se, like watch tv or do a chore. It's my relief.

    • @tehflooper
      @tehflooper 3 роки тому

That's not Se, it's actually Si. Why? You are not performing for a group or audience, but simply enjoying a personal experience. The same for example, for someone who plays an instrument, it is different to go to play with a band or a group, than just playing alone. INTJs have many secret hobbies (Si), but they don't show them in public (Se inferior). He mentions this when he talks about the eighth function of each type, where he says that it can be used for leisure and relax. In the end you are partly correct, given the fact that the fourth and eighth functions interact with each other, the introverted function feeds the extraverted.

Do you think getting drunk can make some people get access easier to their inferior function? (What I mean by easier is something like without being anxious about messing up using their inferior function, because getting drunk as a person who normally is kind of (socially) anxious can (and in my experience and what I saw, tend to) become much less anxious. It seems like alcohol cleans up social anxiety for many people (whatever type they are, and that way they are able to use their weakest frontstack function, the inferior function). Im not totally sure about this at all, and I dont advise drinking alcohol to not-afraid-to-use-our-inferior-function-while-being-at-some-party, i dont advise anything like that, I just thought I share what I saw, although my Ni is tertiary so this might be a miss instead of a hit :)

    • @kaisfp
      @kaisfp Рік тому

I think its common sense but I thought i put it here that of course alcohol makes every function (basically your whole brain and body) function worse then normally would. I was simply thinking about the "removing-social-anxiety-effect-of-alcohol" thing, because I personally think it's a thing, although I didn't do extensive research or anything close to that :D

Why do the socionics reverse functions of each type? for example, SEI (isfp) is according to them SiFe, which is ISFJ according to MBTI/Jung. I don't understand...

    • @TypeTipsLeonTsao
      @TypeTipsLeonTsao  7 років тому +1

This is kind of a controversial issue--not all socionists agree with me that socionics simply reverses the functions. Socionics call SiFe an ISFp because they are ultimately a perceiving type, having Si, a perceiving function, as a dominant function. An FiSe on the other hand would be called an ISFj, with Fi, a judging function leading.

I do like the new perspective on things but for me it feels sliiightly off or maybe i misunderstood what you meant but let me try to explain from my INFP pesrpective:
I noticed I use Fi and Ne as my dominant functions however when experiencing new things e.g meeting new people or job interviews because of the unfamiliar setting the inferior Te function surfaces more and so in interractions i will sometimes appear outgoing, almost extrovert like, and someone who just does things since conversations are usually centered around things that one does/thinks of doing. However upon getting to know me, people will see my more introverted reserved side and ultimately my true self, its just that their first impression of me is that of a Te user. And here is where i disagree with the video since the way you made it sound is as if the inferior function is used too often around friends but, id say if its someone im close and comfortable with they will be aware of my Fi Ne side and deffinately not Te, ask my close friends and ENTJ mum who think I am a lazy mfka for a reason 🤣 they know i just daydream and talk big but am short on action. (any INFPs with similar experiences? Im very curious)

Oh my god I really relate to the inferior Se description from the INTJ. I want to express my true self. I know that it’s in me somewhere inside. I’m always thinking about that “true” me inside. And talking about how I want to become a butterfly which has undergone a metamorphosis.
I strive for beauty in self. Also I’m always seeking for the ultimate reality of the world.

I guess you could say that the dominant+auxiliary functions are the basic self; and the tertiary+inferior functions are what people thrive towards.
In that sense, a person's personal development can be seen by how satisfied is their inferior function; comparing the function hierarchy to the Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

a wonderful perspective! Could you perhaps take it farther and connect these ultimate goals to the Enneagram types' core motivations, the arrows, and the Virtues and Holy Ideas? The Enneagram types are also looking for something missing in their souls. Although there aren't exact correspondences between MBTI and Enneagram types, I think the ways the Enneagram type flavors the MBTI follow your descriptions. Just some thoughts about something that struck me as an INFP type 5 who doesn't usually look like the stereotypical 5 (like yourself, lol). Take a look at the Enneagram Institute's website for the details, or listen to videos by Sandra Maitri.

Very true! So I'm an ENTP but you can find me reminiscing about the times I used to hang out with old friends (we all graduated from college and moved on) and wishing for things now to be as they used to be. Also at work (Post Office), I become familiar with my coworkers and supervisor to the point where I feel a letdown when I have to work with people I am not used to, but usually the sense of familiarity comes back after a short period of time, hehe. While my Si is very weak, I often aspire for positive change (wherever that happens to be) and hope to change the system and leave it better than when I came in ^_^

This was really interesting. And I feel like it was very true as well. As an INFJ I'd say my ultimate goal, what makes me want to live my life even though it can be sad and boring and frustrating sometimes, is understanding the world. Figuring it all out, how it connects, how people behave, how societies work, how love and feelings function etc. I want to figure out the raw truth. And I want to see the beauty and the ugliness of everything. It's sort of a thirst for knowledge, but something I ultimately want to figure out on my own through my own observations and analysis.

Teleology...you just taught me something! Thank you and for everyone else...because an INTJ is in the house and a lesson tax must be collected... ABSTRACT
Aristotle is commonly considered the inventor of teleology, although the precise term originated in the eighteenth century. But if teleology means the use of ends or goals in natural science, then Aristotle was rather a critical innovator of teleological explanation. Teleological notions were widespread among Aristotle’s predecessors, but he rejected their conception of extrinsic causes such as intelligence or god as the primary cause for natural things. Instead, he considers nature itself as an internal principle of change and as an end, and his teleological explanations focus on what is intr ...

I guess the only way you could be sure is learning how your cognitive functions work together on their positions (for example as leading or as creative). If you want to test that you pick the right one, just watch your own behavior. I would first watch out, if its introverted Feeling or Thinking wich is placed in your Ego. The other one of course exists aswell, but its in the subconscious. So you might recognize it aswell, but you are normally not aware of it.
If you figuerd this out you are down to two types. Than it´s only a matter of deciding between Introvert and extravert and thats a matter of your energy-level. Be honest about it: Does it help you recover your engeries hanging out with people or having alonetime. Don´t missunderstand me, a human beeing always needs to do both, but it´s always one which gives us the energy to do the other...
