- "The Fan Dance" forms part of UK Special Forces (SAS & SBS) selection. This test is used as the first major indicator to assess if a candidate has the physical strength and mental determination to pass UK special forces selection The civilian event follows the same 15 mile / 24km course that is part of special force selection and involves climbing up and down Pen Y Fan mountain in South Wales two times from different directions carrying a 35lb / 16kg bergen. The event is run by former members of the Special Air Service regiment. It is a tough challenge!
This is a walk in the park, try doing it with 3 grumpy kids who have no interest in being outdoors.
Stick them in a Bergen. Problem solved 😌
Try doing it with a Platoon of grumpy kids😊
Loving the music!!! I was half expecting Lewes Collins to come running the other way with a Heckler and Koch sub machine gun!
He was on the selection before mine, He was a fit lad
@@zxbob so it sounds like he was (a) hard, and (b) a nice bloke. Ideal Regiment traits.
Seeing this 'Tab' I'm extremely proud of the Fijian contribution to 22 SAS Regiment namely:
1-The Late Talaiasi Labalaba
2-Mr Sekonaia Takavesi
3-The Late Fred Marafono
4-Mr Tom Morrel
5-Mr Ilisoni 'Horse' Ligairi
6-Mr Jim Vakatalai
They joined up with my late father Mr Sikeli Vakalala who was a former Airborne man of 16 Parachute Brigade of Aldershot 1963-1974.
Thankyou 22 SAS Regiment for Laba's statue placed here in Fiji at Nadi international airport, the Pacific's gateway to the world !!!!!!
Sailasa Vakalala
There is also a bronze statue of him outside Sergeants mess in the camp.
Tough bastards. Glad they were on our side
@@thesaint8400 Fijians...fighting comes naturally to us like breathing air..street fight,a pub brawl wherever, whenever or whoever-Skinheads,punks we'll stop them dead in their tracks.
If you have a Fijian beside you during a fight....you'll win it 100% guaranteed!!!!!!
The scaring on Takavesi's back is a sight to behold. A 7.62 round wound that looks like a great white shark bit him. He is a lovely man, I enjoyed my time working with him, and learning from him.
Jim lives opposite us, lovely man 😀
Went up last week for 7 hours (hurt like hell) going up tomorrow....favourite place on earth
Jesus Christ, that’s only 45mins over the actual time for selection. Bloody fantastic achievement 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Congrats on finishing! I've been hoping to do this someday so it's nice to see the route from the perspective of a hiker.
Born and live in the Brecon Beacons , I ride my mountain bike up from tar fechan forest 🌳 then down into Brecon and back up again great mountain biking ,hiking beautiful scenery but the weather can change in a heartbeat,a blue sky then fog snowy rain ☔️ and it goes cold so unpredictable, make sure your prepared for every possible eventual and dress right proper boots and clothing food water , its second nature to me I know the Brecon Beacons like the back of my hand ,but it's still can catch you out , be safe and enjoy 😊
Good points - well made!
did this on roller blades last year towing a cement trunk, Im just hard a guess. Only drank 12 pints that night, and knobed a couple of birds... fuckin easy
beachboy13600 Lolololol. Bread and butter
PMSL
ONLY 2 birds??? ............p00f
I walked from Merthyr Tydfil with 25kg and when I got to the reservoir these guys were were heading the other way. They saw me and thought I was on my way back already. The look on their faces was priceless.
😁😁😁😁
Surely the first guy you passed, would be the guy at the front, and he would know he was at the front, because nobody passed him from behind, so when he saw someone coming the other way, he couldn't assume that they'd started where he started.
Did this several times in my military career luckily under 4 hours each time. Nice job!
Dave Tye - I bet you were hungrier, tired and more injured than these guys when you did it.
On ya mate!!!!
Frost Blade yes by and large,
Longer, Heavier Bergen’s and shorter times ( you’re never told the time you have to complete it in or the actual route, it’s RV to RV at best speed possible)
Frost Blade There are a lot of routes used during selection, not just Pen y fan. it’s a vast area of up-and-down bukits , as I recall the fan was crossed during long drag as well as included as a checkpoint RV on various other routes during selection .
Of course you did Mr Dits! 🤣👍🏻
And what was the make and registration of the white van parked to the right of the pub?
:-p
Love the music, brings back memories :) Well done!
Love the music too. Expecting Lewis Collins (RIP) to turn up and fill someone in.
Fantastic video Simon , I thought it was going to be some kind of “here’s what they went through...so can I”, I’m sure you know it is a little different for them. Super impressed with the soundtrack (great movie ; RIP Edward Woodward & Lewis Collins), & very well done if I may say so in the great time. She is a hard nut to crack, so well done & again, a enjoyable video...cheers, Simon.
Thanks Simon. I wanted to give people an idea of what the event is like. Its obviously very different from selection but if people want a challenge the Fan Dance is a great choice!
The who dares wins soundtrack is amazing.
If someone as fit as you is hitting 167bpm... then I think my heart would literally explode :)
Love the music as the race starts from the Who Dare Wins movie. Classic
Awesome effort, I'll be doing this one 💪 oh and the music was cool 😁
At last a suitable soundtrack.
Doing the climb 2nd time.
Huge respect.
Wow so inspiring, well done guys x
Soundtrack lifted from 1982's Who Dares Wins... like it!
The best Regiment movie of all!
I have a lot of respect for the sas and pen fan dance Alan Hurst-thomlinson
Brill, very well done and remember.....its only pain!!
Respect! Guys had a good one
Outstanding!
Up the hill, down the hill, around the hill, airborne, easy, easy, airborne..... In my time Para´s used to sing this whilst running.
Great music from the film
Just returned from doing this...amazing event. July 7th 2018...Ken and the boys put on a great event
Glad you "enjoyed" it!!
This looks a great challenge
My backs hurting just watching
Great video I enjoyed watching
Had lots of sweaty ball moments on the fan dance. Storey arms for a liverner
Loving the music reminds me of Dirty Harry lol
Great walk did it once but instead of turning round continue to the lower reservoir then right up the trail and back round the ridge if the weathers clear it’s epic
well done 👍 great effort
This video is ace well done.
smashed it. good effort lads
Doing this soon im looking forward to it
Why "The Van Dance"? Sounds like every bugger is chasing a Ford Transit. Done the route many times but starting from car park below Lower Neuadd Reservoir (Pont Cwm Y Fedwen) - to Storey Arms and back.
I can see this mountain from my house and winter is best
If you fancy stepping up and trying the Fan Dance as part of an organised well marshalled event? check out "The Special Forces experience thesfexperience.co.uk The Winter event is 20th and 21st January 2018 and the Summer series 23rd and 24th of June 2018. look forward to seeing you at the Red Phone box.
Nicely done lads, how about an overnight version complete with scoff cooked with hexamine stove as a sequel? Pub run after everyone's in, of course!
I love the smell of hexamine in the morning...it smells like woodland 👍
@@colinstewart1432 wonderful!! And in my neck of the woods (Idaho) badly needed 🥶
Good work fellas
Wow, fantastic
"This is what's known in the trade, as..." 😂
the sas don't stick to the paths they go over the rugged terrain.
Nice One Amazing
Shout out to my step dad; bob Holbrook; one of the originals.
Fare play for completing that challenge, but back in the day the Fan Dance was 3 trips up and down and NO paths but compared to Long Drag, The Dance was reasonably easy, good effort though guys.
Neanderthal Outdoors __
I did it eight times the old way, or was it nine... and someone told me it is just twice to the top, but I'm sure it was three times in those days.
It can get severe up there. Someone I know was blown off the sheep track and got badly smashed up. He was lucky to have survived.
Parachute Regiment recruits do this in Week 8 of Basic Training with 45lbs bergan, belt order, and wpn. Average age is about 18. A 5 minute turn-around water break at Storey Arms, and then get going again back over the hill. It's a mental toughness exercise for reasonably fit people. Wear good, comfortable boots - and don't jack. Get a grip..................
Yes, I've done the Fan Dance many a time as have all Paras. It's a standard Trg facility. Brecon, the local town where the Beacons are, (I'm out now so it's probably all changed nowadays) was originally home to the Para Reg' Battle School. The actual Trg area is a place called Sennybridge. As well as a Trg area for Para Reg recruits, it was also where Jnr and Snr NCO courses are/were conducted for all infantry regiments (no longer just Para Reg' as it was, when it was just the Para Reg Battle School) ) and part of that training was/ is at some stage going over the hills of the Brecon Beacons, which includes Pen-Y-Fan.
What do you mean by "Dont Jack" mate??
@CAPTAIN H.M. MAD MURDOCK yes. 1PARA Co: "pod" / RSM "Igor". 3 PARA. CO-Fletcher/RSM Evans. Happy days!
@@Liamhannam just means keep going - it will end!
@CAPTAIN H.M. MAD MURDOCK yes I remember after Falklands: 1 Para - non-combatant Bn!
The music. Who dares wins.
Thought I heard a Gurkha say "hold my beer" .
You have to run to do the time.
45lb, not including rifle food, and water. To be completed in 3hrs 45 minutes
My bet is that they still use the old Lee Enfield as well, not lightweight modern arms.
@@daddybeagleaz907 no, i am sure they use 555 rifles.
@@daddybeagleaz907 best rifle ever made
Are those two people in the photo at 11:22 brothers?
Look at there age thy did damm good
Testosterone highway! yet serving and ex sas guys still go unnoticed there, look out for the misfits and the old boys!
Deep respect 👍
I wonder how it compares to the rhodesian SAS selection course or that of the selous scouts at wafa wafa with dangerous game like elelhant lion ans buffaloe.
The danger of being eaten (as has happened) would certainly focus the attention. I doubt that any member of the SAS Regts (UK, Australian, NZ or Rhodesian) would get into an argument over which were tougher. They all produce great SF operators.
I see you've never encountered Welsh women...
@ 3:01 Pen y Fan is actually 886 meters.
Justin7036 😁
' I would like to do this event very much ! When is the next one scheduled for in 2017 please?Still recovering for a Sprained ankle but WILL be ready if I'm accepted to join ! '
Visit www.thefandancerace.com all the details are there.
Sorry to correct you but that is not the organisers of this event. It is www.thesfexperience.co.uk
What's the name of the tune you use at beginning. I know it who dares wins
Its from the Who Dares Wins soundtrack. Its called "Welsh Mountains"
Spot on, well done guys! How did you prepare / train for it ?
There isn't really any short-cut. We just got lots and lots of miles in tabbing up and down lots of hills with the full 35lb bergen load. Start with a reasonable distance and then just keep extending it. The longest training tab I did was about 14 miles and the actual event is about 15.5. Jacob's Ladder on Pen Y Fan is very steep so try to get some steep hill work along the way!
Also do try to do a practice session at Pen Y Fan following the Fan Dance route before the event as this helps you to know what you will be facing on the day!
I think 35lb is more than enough for most of us civilians! Total respect for doing it 3 times with 65lbs!! I think that would probably kill me off!
Not sure what the point of doing that is. Surely a lot easier turning up and doing it when there isn’t 200 other people getting in your way?
You haven't seen steep mountain trails yet if you call those "extremely steep".
Hopefully if I can get myself fit enough I shall be doing the fan dance in 2017
See you at the old red phone box!
A question for you how much does each Bergen way as it looks quite a challenging walk.
Bergen weight is 35lbs
Hamley times a year is the fan Dance done
Twice - one in the winter, one in the summer
Usual dumbing down so the general ‘I’ve done that’ public can have a day out
Not Bad not bad only 35 mins overtime well done
What OS map is it for that region?
Where was that path when I did it? Mind you we weren't allowed to use paths/tracks (man-made).
Only sheep tracks in 1962 , during "P" Company to join REME Para .
william carrington not much better in 76 but was scorching hot!
Anyone remember Farm 15 ?
Training for this now for the june fan dance
Im crapping it but im not gonna be defeated im determined to beat it
If my dad was alive today he'd be doing it with me he served in British army rct ,rip lance corporal
You’ll cotillions be in lockdown How are you training ?
Blimey, these guys use "SAS" to sell anything!
they been paid to walk with heavy equiment
I drove down from London many many moons ago in my TA days and did this without all the hype , 3 times up and 3 times down, with Bergen, was in my 20's then ! Great fun but Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers is by far harder. In my 50's now but still love the hills. Love the SAS music from Who Dares Wins with the Lewis Collins
brings back memories of when I was in the sas
🤥
Yeah I remember you, we were on the balcony with Fijian Bob.

How many of those people made it into the SAS?
Most people taking part are civvies. Quite a lot have prior military experience and some former SAS / SBS folks take part for fun. It is a tiny part of full selection but still a great challenge to participate it and raise money for good causes.
I'm out! Ill leave the man stuff to the MEN-the REAL MEN> THANK you to all Patriots xxx
Wow Cameron Diaz!
Evening buddy 😁. Great video. How much were ya carrying. Hope ta be doing it next year. Thanks for sharing mate. ATVB, Andy
I was carrying 25lbs as I am in the veteran's (old git) category!
@@TheSimonHazeldine evening buddy. I'm doing the fan this year. 29 June.

@@TheSimonHazeldine thank you simon. It's people like you that left us. To say go on. Thank you 👍. Time to put the kettle on. Just had a run. Ha ha. June 29..

Next week - Long drag...
Going back up Jacobs ladder looks pleasant on the old leg muscles.. @8:26
Its a beast of a climb John!
Unfortunately there’s no ex special forces running this events company.
is it easier if you have tattoos?
Jeff Vader and a bald head too
Some proper Walt webbing there!
Just enjoying ourselves and raising some money to help ex-forces guys with PTSD
Simon Hazeldine Fair one. Only a gentle dig intended.
No worries!
SAS not SBS get back down and do it again
It doesn't start there and that's a fact.
I've wondered for SF selection if they use webbing aswell because that make alot harder.
They don't. Its not a BFT, They carry a belt with water bottles.
👍
I have been invited. Please can anyone who has been give me some info Please ? Thankyou in advance. I love Our SAS & SBS 💖💜
Train very hard - it is a tough event. 24km up and down Pen Y Fan twice! Enjoy.
Simon Hazeldine Thankyou. Are The DS there from SAS# WhoDaresWins from Channel 4 Please ? Respect.
No the DS are usually ex-SAS/SBS but not from the TV show/
Simon Hazeldine Thankyou & Respect.
Rosco Pico The .o.k never came to mind .... Respect.
The music kills the fun.
lee grant you dont need to be fit just determind in the mind
That's not the Fan Dance. Wrong route wrong weight.
Yes it is the Fan Dance used currently by UKSF Selection. Weights vary due to category on the event. Rgds, TSFE
Easy way up
My uncle was part of the that Iranian siege team
andy mcnab bring me here
I only came here because one time I was at delgrossos and saw a guy dancing with a fan
Civvies paying thousands for this.
It costs about £50 or so!
And you watch it.
Did that during RAF recruit training in 1987. Easy peasy. But I was 16 and fit as a fiddle lol
ashley styles stfu mate this video isn’t the actual fan dance test. If you’re with your platoon you’d all be working as a group carrying either a stretcher or a log which the sas or commanding officer would give u
banter4eva that's psbc
They should be yomping 😨
LOL 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Yomping...cabbage hat slang for walking.
In the Airborne parlance....tabbing !!!!
My late father and younger brother were both former Paras of 16 Parachute Brigade-1 Para & 216 Para Signals respectively!!!!!!
Oh you booty! Yomping us what you do when you've fallen in on the sea bed after your ship sank. Tabbing is what you do out in the cuds, tabbing.
Kick in the butt
What time do selection recruits have to complete this in?
John Knight I think it's three hours or so!
Under 4 hours is the cutoff time
Never mind, why should 'anybody or thing pay to walk on a mountain that has long stood their. Before most on you where here ? I walk where I want when I want ! Pay to walk on earths mountains🙈🙉😂
See your point but the Fan Dance event organisers provide directing staff, mountain safety teams, food afterwards etc so this has to be paid for. Nothing to stop anyone doing the Fan Dance route on their own of course (we visited Pen Y Fan a couple of times during our training) but the camaraderie of the event and the excellent organisation makes it well worth it in my book.
Simon Hazeldine don't answer the idiot I don't think his brain cells or lack thereof would cope
haha
'People. Could take their own food and the path I similar to the yellow brick road just like the wizard of OZ it leads you by itself. So if a man or woman is fit enough or built for the occasion the direction is not needed as the path is marked.' That said I wouldn't recomend novelty fit people or over consumers do it without the assistance of yourselves !So I see your point their to. But their's also the free will of the person or person's and if their's enough of them or they're clear fit anyway then they. Need not pay for mother nature's free views of the earth unless the need thsd assistance of people like yourselves 👍
