I agree I am also from Keokuk and yes it is run down in parts but there are some beautiful areas as well. I miss what it was when I was younger. I really wish we could breath some life back into it again.I live in Arkansas now but go back at least once a year. Recently saw an old childhood home there burn down and it broke my heart. I will always cherish the memories I made there.
You definitely picked the worst parts of town to drive through. The north side, Grand Ave and the Rand Park area are beautiful. I sure wish something could turn things around economically for my hometown.
I live 45 minutes from Keokuk and enjoy going there. You missed showing the waterfront with the George M. Verity and the only hydro dam on the Mississippi and the fantastic depot. Even Marion Morrison (a/k/a John Wayne) went to elementary school there. You drove by the Pilot Grove Savings Bank which is located where Mark Twain's brother had his print shop. Many of the early immigrants to Iowa came through Keokuk as it was the furthest north you could go without encountering the Des Moines Rapids. The Keokuk National Cemetery is beautiful and we have chosen it to be our resting place.
My family and I have been living here about 15 years now. We moved in 2008. Hard to believe it's been that long. I know it's not perfect, but I honestly love living here. It's comfortable, and there's enough stores for me to be able to get what I need without having to travel far. (I moved from Bushnell, Illinois, where we had one grocery store and a bunch of gas stations, and that was about it.) We lived up near Rand Park and Grand Avenue. Used to go down to the park and play a lot. As we got older, I would walk through the park listening to music. Still do. I'm rambling on, but there's so many beautiful sights here, being along the Mississippi river, and I honestly wouldn't trade it for anything.
Our parents took us to the park there where the statue of Chief Keokuk is. It was so well kept and beautiful with steps that led you down by the river. We had so many family picnics there. This was back in the fifties when there were beautiful parks everywhere. We lived in a small little old town nearby in Ill. Called Elvaston. So many happy memories!
It would have been nice to turn right on N. 5th St. from High St, and proceed to and along Grand Ave and the Rand Park area. Keokuk has some nice areas, as well.

I lived in Keokuk in 1970-1973. We had a brand new house on the north side of town where there were new houses for several blocks recently built in the '60's. I went back for the first time about 10 years ago, and the streets that were new 50 years ago have not been repaired since. I was there again a few weeks ago, and now its even worse . Sad to see my where i lived with such fond memories just falling apart !

Fond memories of Keokuk. My step grandparents owned a bookstore/stationary/office supply store on Main St. up until around 1960's...Rollins and Company, I believe. Rand Park, watching the Mississippi River and its traffic, and general small town charm is what I remember. Last visited about 2006. Always though this was the smartest place to live in that general area, as it sits higher above the Mississippi River and isn't subject to overflowing and flooding nearly as much as the Illinois side.
Thank you for sharing this video with us. Your video was far more positive sounding about Keokuk, than was the video I saw earlier. While I never resided in Keokuk, I have visited it a few times in the 1960's. Like many towns of its size around America, I understand that Keokuk is not what it once was. In 1968, my last visit to Keokuk, US 218 (Main Street) was full of flourishing businesses, with no / few empty storefronts if any, with a decent array of places for the family to eat at, especially in 1968 when there weren't as many chain restaurants as there are today. After I was taken for a tour of Keokuk that year, I recalled only one home on all its shade-tree covered streets that was dilapidated and in disarray. If I ever need someone to do a video of something, like a promo of a small city or town, I'd pick you over that other guy - he was really negative and hopeless sounding, while you sound far more "middle of the road," and less offensive to those who still have cherished memories and a love for any town that they grew up in.

Have you noticed that all these river towns that are losing population are still fairly neat and tidy. You do not see the Detroit like ghetto landscape.
What I would say to that, is that sure, most of the residential neighborhood areas of Detroit look like the apocalypse, but those neighborhoods are surrounded by a region that offers a great job market along with big city amenities. Downtown Detroit is full of life and so are the Detroit suburbs. I worry about Keokuk's future and other simular towns because they don't have the benefits of being surrounded by other prosperous communities. Unlike Detroit, Keokuk and other failing small rural towns don't have much that will attract new companies into town. The only way for these small rural towns to turn around their economic downward spiral is to bring in new jobs, and that's proven to be quite the challenge for places like Keokuk.

Keoku has lost a lot of industry due to companies being purchased by overseas investors and being moved to another city or country. Keokuk's largest employer is a corn processing plant that makes base products for sweeteners and starch. It is owned by a French company. All small towns suffer. You could have gone down Grand Avenue and saw beautiful homes at near mansion level. You chose not to. It seemed that you wanted to only show the less property valued area of the city. Criminal reports used to consist of car keying and some vandalism. Now, because of a small police force, these criminals can come, do their dirt and leave. Very easy to escape to Missouri or Illinois when you only have to cross a bridge
Did you see the gas prices displayed on the flashing sign? $1.89. I live 30 mins from there and Trump gas prices were very nice. Go Brandon.
If you went across the bridge right by real cat man gas prices over there are so much cheaper
Wow. I'd like to know what your driving in Keokuks streets and not have even one jiggle in the video recording from the horable streets. Also you should do an update. Where you drove, so much has changed in just a year even down the main stretch. 😳😟
I have lived there for years thank God I moved out cuz that town sucked there's so many drug addicts walking around police officers don't do anything I love that stuff sealed out of my f****** yard it was awesome and I love the mayor he was awesome he likes to f****** give everybody the rich area of part of town everything like New Roads new houses then you got everybody else had crap roads everywhere that was awesome to drive on those roads I love the mayor who brings into new jobs but each time there was an offer to put a factory there the mayor says no we don't want that it was so awesome and not have jobs
Why do people always choose to drive thru the worst and not show the good side!!! So disappointed in this video of a great town!!!
I married a wonderful guy from Keokuk and both of our sons were born while living there! All I can say is Jim loved his hometown!!
Be happy I didn’t name the video as “The Worst City in Iowa,” as there are many lists that have Keokuk as Iowa’s worst city.

What good place the rich area what's a nice roads and everything tell me what road because that's the only place has the good roads everything else sucks around us
If you think this place is bad check out Clinton iowa
Did. Both are about the same imo.

Eyyy I seen my house lol
I am from Vancouver and looking to invest in real estate outside of my country as Canada is becoming dismally Socialist. Also, it is nothing for a condo in VanCity to go for 700k....which is absurd and completely unsustainable. What is the rental situation and occupancy rates in this town?
Going straight for the bottom of the barrel instead, ehh?
@BH-br4ee
Pretty nice places in SE Asia and in Southern Italy.... I would not say that is bottom of the barrel. We'll see if things change for the better when that POS Trudeau Socialist gets knocked out.
Call Elizabeth $200 rent now it's $500 rent to $700 rent now that sounds better but I would not go to this town with all these drug addicts police officers don't do anything and then we're f****** sucks
@wolverinee9089
Hey, thanks for the info...
I heard there are lots of hardworking trades folks with Christian values living there. Perhaps I'm wrong?
I plan to do a road trip into the Midwest USA to see how things look. An American fella I used to chit-chat with recommended this particular place because he is receiving steady rental income from 3 houses . Thanks for the info. It might be worth a look.

Good luck with that.

Did you actually talk to someone from Keokuk? It's pronounced Kee-o-kuck, not Kee-o-cook. Do your homework.
Not like civic pride is a high point, I live there for most of my life and I felt ashamed, still do.
That building on the corner there were the old a&w root beer stand it was tore down for a coffee shop and I miss that a&w root beer stand homemade root beer floats in a frosty mug was so good.
I'm across the river in Hamilton. No one is proud of keokuk.
Except, also growing up there, it was pronounced so many different ways, even by the residents.
You call it that I call I Keocock I hate this town
All of your negative reporting only deters persons or bs from moving there So you are hurting more than thinking of helping.
He's just being honest 🤷🏼♀️
I lived there for years and let's play this sucks there's too many drug addicts police officers don't do s*** and the roads don't ever get fixed and each time we get an opportunity for a factory the mayor doesn't want that and there's no point even working there because there's no jobs @@myszkaksiezniczka915
You are not giving this little town any favors. You are very negative!
Well I lived there for years this place has so many drug addicts everybody likes to steal stuff out of your yard there's a pawn shop likes to take the stolen stuff and sell it back to you
wow that place looks like it blows
That's because it does..lol..
Hillbillies
That's insulting
Nah, you got it confused with your mom.
Dawg..💀 did I just get insulted...
As a person who lives here no one lools like hillbillies, only the old people😐🤏
