I was born in 2002, so just missed being able to experience his characterisation in my childhood (at least, his characterisation prior to the mid-to-late-2010's)
I've heard great things about the characters in the older games, however, so I was very excited to see it return - and needless to say, I was not disappointed! Easily my favourite part of this game, and I hope they continue this moving forward!

What I loved about Sonic was that he always saw the best in his enemies and gave them the benefit of the doubt. Just look at Merlina from Sonic and the Black Knight for example. Instead of getting pissed with her or cracking lame puns, Sonic simply gives her a new outlook on life.

  • @darkkirb206

Why do I love Sonic? Simply put, he’s a character that should represent the best aspects of what people should aspire to be. His ability to look towards a problem and run towards it to find a solution, his “never say die” attitude to keep moving forward and do what he thinks is right regardless of what the circumstances are, and his desire for adventure and the freedom to go where he wants, do what he wants, and be the person (or hedgehog in this case) he wants to be. Yeah he will always have his flaws, but he always means well and will always do what he can to help someone out. And, in my opinion, these are traits that I feel are pretty consistent with the character (even if it wasn’t presented well at all in the 2010s) and are apparent in every other version and take on this character. But again, these are just my views. Great video to post on Sonic’s birthday.

I got into Sonic pretty recently. Last year actually, a couple colleagues of mine were talking about the second movie and I just kinda thought to myself "hey that's a pretty big franchise I know pretty little about maybe I'll look into it".
I think what hooked me is the relentless posivity alongside the sometimes darker themes. I think it gives a nice contrast that makes the positivity feel more grounded and relatable. As someone who's battled a long time with depression it's genuinely helped me gain a healthier perspective on life that even though things suck "it doesn't matter" I can "live and learn" and just keep going and even if these ideas are coming out of a silly blue rat there is clearly real merit to this philosphy.

Sonic says something similar to "Careful? Where's the fun in that?" In the first issue of Sonic IDW (instead it's "Sure but where's the fun in that?" when Tails tells him to not risk his life every 5 minutes) and considering that Ian Flynn is the writer for Sonic Frontiers and Sonic IDW, he must've snuck in that reference, and I find that pretty neat

I was a little boy in the 90s one morning I hear the sound of a clock on TV and Sonic's theme song in the adventures of sonic the hedgehog. I saw a blue hedgehog thinking why is he blue? My uncle didn't know the answer to that question lol. But he did know where the character came from. He showed me sonic 2. Then later S3&K . I saw his true character and that attitude but there was something more to that. I saw he wasn't just a little pissy rodent but he had purpose in a game that didn't need words to tell you what he was all about. Dr Robotnik was trying to take over his world and use the life of these animals to fuel his industrial schemes, sonic was having none of that wanted all his little friends to keep living the freedom he has. He's stopped eggman multiple times since then. He made his friends and he would put himself on the line for them at a moments notice. Sonic through the years has meant more to me because he cares more about an individual than any of my biological parents. And I appreciated at the times when my grief at that I was watching and playing a character that cared about the people he's supposed to care about he's surrounded himself with. Maybe deep down I felt like he looked at me on the screen and gave me a thumbs up because he cared about me. Cheesy as hell that is Bec he's a fictional character it is how I feel. You can call him just a blue rat that's not real. But if he's not real? Then how was he on the screen created by brilliant people? He exists in this world to entertain and uplift us in his own special way like alot of fictional characters were intended to be created to do. This is all why I love sonic the hedgehog. 👍

This analysis is very interesting and I agree. I was also missing the more serious Dark Age stories, I thought Sonic and the other characters would never return to their essence, but Sonic Frontiers changed my perspective. The recent Visual Novel The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog also made me see that the franchise has chances to go back to how it was before, because it once again brought the characters with their original personalities, for example, Rouge was acting as his character is , a famous thief; Knuckles, the hard-headed Echidna; Amy returned to the personality she had in the Dark Age; Team Chaotix has also been restored; and mainly, Sega brought back one of the characters that it had left in the corner, Blaze the Cat, I missed her a lot in recent years. I hope that Sonic Team and Sega continue on the right path, it seems that they have realized the mistakes they made with the franchise over the years, and I also hope that future games will not only bring new fans, but also that the stories will be interesting and do not commit the faults that happened.

I'm not always great at articulating why I like something, but here goes:
Most of the other heroes that I liked as a kid, Mario, Link, the Power Rangers, the Ninja Turtles, they were pretty much all classic clean-cut good guys. Sonic stood out among them precisely for that attitude. He would sometimes butt heads with his friends (Knuckles especially), but still genuinely cared for them. He wasn't afraid to snark at his enemies, but he understood that they were serious threats and didn't belittle them. I never really read comics as a kid, but those other Heroes were more like Superman where Sonic was more like Spiderman.

      @orlandogarcia7084 10 місяців тому +1

That's a BIG ditto for me, man. All the franchises that you've mentioned do indeed focus on being inclusive to all audiences, in the sense that literally anyone can look at a protagonist and "see themselves in them." Where they falter is not focusing on character, but instead, on other determined priorities that the devs view as far more important. The biggest priority for a Mario & Zelda property, for example, is to perfect gameplay and establish levels/worlds that are nuanced and expansive enough to keep audiences riveted and engaged. Because of that, there's basically no room to explore why Mario or Link keep doing what they do, if they get tired of doing it, if there exist other ambitions/ goals they have, etc. Sonic, for various reasons I won't get into for now, has the luxury of being inclusive for audiences, but also being comedic, introspective, and all-around nuanced, character-wise
Addendum: Sonic's case has been helped by a recent wave of HORRIBLE self-insert protagonists in media like film, video games, and TV, but that's a whole other can of worms.

I feel like the biggest issue with how Sonic’s character changed is that it’s clear that Sega was trying WAAAAAY too hard to back pedal on the Dragon Ball-Like themes and writing in Sonic, which ultimately hurts the energy of the series. Even though I know they want to avoid copyright, I feel like they’re in too deep for that and they should embrace it. I can get wanting to back pedal on super forms, but basic goku-like parts of sonic’s character? Hell no.

    • @lioheart55

I feel like they should embrace that dragon ball like elements completely. They already were able to implement it into the series so well to begin with why not use it to its fullest potential. Those super sonic boss fights and his combat animations oozes that style and was what people used to imagine him fighting a long time ago with their fan animations and fan games. They shouldn't be ashamed of it if fans like it.

My very first Sonic game was Sonic Adventures on the Sega Dreamcast. I had begun really getting into Sonic, and wanted to play his games. My parents found a way to get me a Sega Dreamcast for relatively cheap and Sonic Adventure, so I was stoked. When I finally got the game, the opening movie had me _floored._ I was hooked from then on.
For me, it's always been about his personality more than the gameplay itself. That's why I love the Dark Era of Sonic. Sure the games were of questionable quality, but they _nailed_ his personality. My favorite moment's include both the Story Book titles. Like in The Secret Rings where he takes control of the magic lamp the Villain was bound to and makes wish after wish, sitting in the man's throne while _firing the Lamp's magic at him like a laser gun._ Or in Sonic and the Black Knight where he sees this little kid on the side of the road who needs a Dragon defeated to save his family, and Sonic doesn't even hesitate despite knowing it's going to lead to him failing the test. Mind you, I called it being the secret Fourth Test of character, but the fact he _didn't even have to think about it_ was what I loved.
Sonic is fantastic overall. Seriously, happy birthday Blue Blur. Keep being cool.

I got into Sonic with Sonic 06. I was three years old at the time, and with my only other gaming experience being Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Bros Wii, Sonic 06 was the coolest thing ever. I was sold on the open ended levels and the cool characterizations of Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. Just how unabashedly optimistic Sonic was really stuck with me, and seeing how his interactions with Silver caused him to start acting the same way was so cool to see. The scene at the end of Kingdom Valley where Sonic gives up for the first time in the game over Elise and Eggman’s deaths, only for Silver to pull him back up and give him hope again, completely flipping their dynamic up to this point, really sold how important Sonic was to the people in his world, and how important he is to me. He was cocky, cool, and also alarmingly wise beyond his years.
It was discouraging to see his character repeatedly deteriorate from Colors onwards, especially in Forces when we were promised a return to form that we didn’t get. As a result, I completely fell off the franchise until the first movie and the newly canon IDW Comics gave me hope again. When Frontiers released, and these characters finally returned to how they should be, I cried tears of joy. I didn’t sleep for several days and missed an alarming amount of college classes because of it, and I don’t regret a thing. Sonic is finally back, and I really hope he’s here to stay.

Sonic is INTERESTING in Frontiers, and his compassion being front and center is SO important to that. Colors did try to show it once or twice, though it got buried in the jokes, and after that... nothing, really. Frontiers brought it back, and I am absolutely here for it.

  • @EvelynWn

My favorite thing about Sonic as a character is how he changes the people around him. That's why it's so important that the game has such a large cast of characters. The people that meet him are never the same again. He doesn't hold grudges. When Eggman stabbed Knuckles in the back, there was no judgment, no doubt. Sonic just accepted they were on the same team now. When Shadow showed up and announced he'd be taking care of the biolizard that was fine by him. He didn't see the conversation between Shadow and Amy. He has no idea what changed Shadows mind. But it didn't matter Shadow was there and helping and that was good enough for him. In the IDW comics he was even willing to give Eggman a second chance at a peaceful life. He isn't naive, but forgiving. And that's so rare in a protagonist to be both socially adept and forgiving. People become better because he believes they can be no matter how much they try to prove otherwise.

Love how Frontiers finaly treats the Sonic crew character wise. However it actualy threw me for a loop at the end when Sonic and Eggman didn't meet up again after the final fight all things considered. Espically after seeing Sonic's dynamic with his friends, it was actualy jarring NOT, to see anything at all between Sonic and Eggman, considering the circumstances with Sage. Hoping the DLC fixes that to some degree.

Something about Sonic made me love him a lot. My memory isn't that good, but... I was really, really young when I first knew about Sonic. I'm a teen now but I knew him for more than a decade. I watched my parents play the games. I played the games shortly after and I don’t really know if I liked it after that. Oh yes, a few episodes of Sonic Boom aired on Cartoon Network and it's never bern introduced again until I was bought another Genesis system and the memories came back. I grew up watching cutscenes of the modern games because I was too shy to ask my mom, who couldn’t care less about Sonic, to get me the games. I was in love with the franchise, no matter what game it was. It was just... inspiring. But then, some fan games and a lot of stuff messed up the franchise and I kinda turned my back to it for a couple of years. Plus, I didn't realize the downgrades of any other character except for Tails and Amy. Because, before Frontiers was released, Tails went from brave to weak. And Amy went from a sweetheart to a yandere stalker to Sonic. Anyway, after those couple of years, I decided to go back to franchise because the franchise I turned my back on Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't making me happy anymore. Finally, Frontiers released and now I'm a Sonic fan again!
Thanks for taking time out of your day to read my story! ❤

When I love about sonic was his voice, honestly I don't care who voicing him especially when it comes to his characterization to the stories been told.
Roger Craig Smith is very close to voice sonic by any case through acknowledge his purpose for nature and relevant to the voice of sonic in frontiers that I like the most, he's not that bad until 2010's felt down with Roger's work as sonic.
Jason Griffith is another example for voicing the character perfectly at times with unleashed and black knight are improvements to see Jason's voicing sonic was fantastic, same with roger in frontiers, even Ryan Drummond.
Speaking of Ryan Drummond was the only person who voice sonic in our childhood in early 2000's, he gave sonic's voice to life compared with two actors roger and Jason, people loved him as sonic because that way he sound iconic, to cool for school and slightly great nature of his attitude, after he came back voicing sonic in Sonic and Tails R, he sounds more revolutionary of sonic's old characterization turning into mature sonic who loves about freedom and New adventures.
So yeah, I apologize if this comment so long, you know what I mean.

I have a theory of why Sonic acted the way he is in the Meta Era. Well imagine this... : You kept fighting the same bad guy over and over, and over time it becomes too easy to beat that guy. You felt proud of yourself for doing it. I mean if I did the same thing, I will become prideful of myself, who doesn't want to become proud of themselves for doing something like that? That's exactly what Sonic felt in the Meta Era.! He became cocky because he is too proud of himself defeating Dr. Ivo. Eggman Robotnik.

I got into Sonic years ago (2009?) after coming across some random Sonic Unleashed gameplay. After that I just needed to know everything i could about the games and its characters. But Sonic drew me in with his design and his confident but caring attitude, he was everything I wanted to be as a shy, awkward kid and he still is.

I think some credit should go to the success of the Sonic movies. They managed to blend in Sonic's then light-hearted appeal with drama without being melodramatic while also paying tribute to Sonic's history. Now imagine if back in 2019, Paramount went full "modern Hollywood" with the first Sonic movie i.e. double down on the ugly design and shove labels like "trolls", "haters", "manbabies", "(insert label)-phobic" etc to anyone who criticizes it. It would have flopped HARD, but the worst part is that SEGA wouldn't have seen the benefit of a Sonic story with drama and stakes. We really could have faced a reality where the Meta era would forever be the status quo for Sonic, and instead of Sonic Frontiers we get Sonic Forces 2/Generations 2.

The reason i love sonic is because of they ways he treats his friends, while also having friends that will always help, regardless of any danger. It's something that i envy, and can look towards sonic for comfort. After seeing sonic in an archive book, I started searching him up everywhere. I would look for him in stores, websites, and even on tv. He may not be my favorite character in the series, but he does hold a very special places in my heart that can't be outclassed by any other fiction character out there.

Why do I love Sonic: he and his large cast of characters were comfort characters for me, especially in elementary school when I was dealing with bullies and a crappy teacher I had in 2nd grade. My first Sonic game was 3D Blast on the Saturn and I saw glimpses of Adventure in stores via kiosks. I played a lot of Sonic 2 & 3 and CD on PC but my first and one of my favorites was Sonic Adventure 2 on GameCube. Eventually I got Adventure 1 for my tenth birthday. The Adventure games regardless of their dated flaws will always be my favorites. They were the first games in the series where I felt these characters were growing: from Tails overcoming his inferiority complex to Gamma discovering his humanity all the way to Knuckles potential discovery of love (for Rouge). I’m planning on getting Frontiers for Christmas and from what I’ve heard it seems to going back to being about the characters. I hope one day they go back to adding more playable characters in the games and not just as DLC

Fantastic video as usual! Always great to hear what draws others to a character, and it's hard to argue with anything that was said. It feels weird to say that Sonic is back because he kinda is back. Since the 2010s, the character of Sonic was there, sure, but the direction was so horrendous that it felt like we were looking at a different Sonic period. He wasn't snarky, he was downright sarcastic. He wasn't serious when he needed to be, and he wasn't the hedgehog that we grew up with in the Sonic Adventure games and Sonic Unleashed especially.

I became a Sonic fan in High-School. At the time Generations was considered a new game, and it was one to two months before the first trailer for Forces came out. What made me a Sonic fan was the story of Adventure 2. I grew attached to these characters, they felt multi-dimensional to me. Sonic and his friends weren't just blank slate characters, or cardboard cutouts, they had complex personalities. And Shadow, Shadow is my favorite character, his story was honestly the best in my opinion.

sonic may be close to a perfect character but i absolutely love Sonic X for hinting at some of his darker sides. One thing that stands out to me is his cleverness and mischievousness, and how he uses this typically villainous quality to defeat evil (tricking eggman). However, in the cruise ship episode, he actually SELFISHLY deceives his friends in order to get off the ship---all because of his fear of water. He throws a tantrum, pretends hes sick, says he thinks Amy's is cute when she "swings her hammer", and even uses Tail's love for machines against him. He was being a total brat and its one of my favorite episodes!! Sonic doesn't get what he wants cuz the people he was using his cleverness against was his friends instead of an enemy. And the story punishes him for it! I need more stuff like this

I like that Sonic is back to form but it would be cool to maybe explore how Sonic got that confidence and sense of justice that he's known for. Like a backstory. Everyone had to start from somewhere. He wasn't just born cocky and completely sure of himself. I think seeing him develop into who he is now would make me buy into his character so much more. But that's just my opinion.

As someone who started with the Advance series and Rush, I initially didn't give Sonic himself much thought. He was the basic guy to play these games with, so I usually only went with him out of obligation. He was my option in Rush because there were only two characters to play as and my sis exclusively reserves herself literally any female character available so I had to be the Sonic to her Blaze, and in Advance and Advance 2 (and even specific third Acts of Zones in Advance 3) I really only played him to unlock the others, never really minding the dialogue.
It was actually Sonic & The Black Knight that got me interested. People like to say IDW and even Prime Sonic are too nice, but it's exactly the humanizing form of confident kindness that Sonic had in Black Knight that made me like him as a character. Obviously he was the driving force for my prior favorites like Tails and Amy and Silver (whom I only knew from the Olympics), but Black Knight showed me that Sonic wasn't just the smug bastard I knew him as from early Sonic X or the "default option" that kid me saw in him in earlier games (as far back as playing Ultimate Flash Sonic on a PC in middle school).
Is he too "perfect" and wordy in IDW (even so far)? I guess, but after a decade of him slinging insults and downplaying situations like there's no tomorrow, I just loved seeing a Sonic that just wanted to do what he saw as right, to push others in what he believed was the right direction, no matter how bad they seemed.
Sonic, to me, is an amazingly respectable protagonist. A "flat" character, but not a bad one, as the way his presence influences others for the best is undeniable. You can't just remove Sonic's friends imo, they show just how good of an influence he is, and that's as necessary for them... as it is for him. Unleashed has him help an amnesiac while Black Knight has him "recognize" people who aren't actually his friends but clearly ressemble them, and yet with the way he handles both situations, you can immediately tell his confidence isn't bad, it's a positive reinforcement.
Sonic is the freedom to be who you are, and do what you think is right.
Sonic CD, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Rush, 06 (yes, even 06), Rush Adventure, Secret Rings, Unleashed, Black Knight, and now Frontiers all are great showcases of that, whether they use words or actions to acknowledge it.
This, is the primary failing of Colors, Generations, Forces, and the entire Boom saga imo.

What I like the most about Sonic is his openness about other's redemptions. Like when Shadow shows up out of nowhere and tells Sonic that he'll deal with the Biolizard while Sonic and Knuckles go to stop the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic doesn't question Shadow. He doesn't ask why Shadow is helping them, he doesn't ask what ulterior motive Shadow might have, he just trusts Shadow. He trust that Shadow will do the right thing, and that Shadow will keep his word. Sonic also does this with Silver. When Silver stops attacking him and starts helping him, Sonic doesn't ask why. It's as if Sonic believes that everyone has the capacity for redemption, and that philosophy is one that gives me hope.

Why do I love Sonic? He’s different. Different from Mario, Link, Mega Man, and other gaming mascots. While I still love those other series, Sonic stood out as the snarky, cool guy. My first Sonic game was actually Sonic 4 Episode 2. I still remember playing that game in 2013, when I was 4 years old. I still love that game. Mainline, however, it’s Lost World, then Forces and Mania. I hated Lost World and Forces because I played those games at the same time I started watching Sonic TV shows, namely TAOSTH and Sonic X. Those Sonic’s were the Sonic that I gravitated to, the snarky, smart, cool guy who impacts the people around him in a positive way. That’s what attracted me to play the Adventure games and Heroes. It’s also what prompted me to watch internet videos about the characterization of Sonic characters. It actually took me an embarrassingly long time to appreciate the main man, Sonic. I had liked other characters like Tails and Shadow because of their unique personalities, but I always ignored the person who is a main factor to why their characters shine: Sonic. Now, Sonic is firmly in my Top 3 Sonic characters, with Shadow and Tails. Him and his world of characters that gravitated to him because of his attitude is unlike other mascots. Mario’s flat character is kinda the point, as are other series. While I still love Mario and his cast of characters, there’s something enticing about how Sonic’s cast formed from his attractive personality. That will always be the reason why I love Sonic. He’s different.

As someone who is a Newer fan of Sonic My personal history With Sonic has been pretty wierd over the years. Originally i didn't even really think Sonic really had some story at all.
My first sonic game i ever played was Sonic CD on the PS3 back whe that came out. and that was just becaue well i could. it was a cheap game so my partent's didn't really care. so i played that on and off . I didn't really care that much for the story or gameplay. i was just amazed that the game had an actual Cartoon as it's opening.(which was something 6 year old me hadn't seen back then) and then i just really didn't care for sonic over the years. I managed to get my hands on the internet followed the stuff i cared about Sonic popped up here and there i played sonic 1 on occasion because i like Retro games.
But there was always that consistant negativity around the franchise. The fandom full of wierdos and degenerates writing wierd Fanfics. The horror stories of Broken games like 06, the overly endgy stuff that Kinda made me uncomfortable at the time. It was nothing like the Light hearted and silly adventures i saw in the Opening of CD.
it wasn't untill in 2017 with Forces of all things that my views changed a litte for sonic. I was at the hospital at the time because i had some Digestion issues and we were trying to figure out the cause. So i was just Laying in the hospital bed an just out of boredon Watched DanTDM's Play through of Sonic Forces. and was just entertained. i can see how the story isn't that Good with a lot of issues and with the gameplay being wierd with the Boost to win level design and Classics wierd physics. But i didn't care. It was just a fun Light hearted plot about Taking the world back from eggman.
so i after that life went on and i continued my life again not really caring about sonic but not really hating him either like i used to. Then there was the Whole Sonic Movie thing with Sonics design. and stuff every one had a good laugh about that one I went to see the movie with my brother bceause we wanted to see how it turned out.
then the biggest Changes came that i'd say turned me into a fan instead of just someone observing from the distance. It was the Initial Trailer Sonic central trailer For Sonic Frontiers that played at the Game awards i think it was, The second Announcement trailer in december and the second Sonic movie. once again you know i was hyped for sonic movie 2 and all No one new anything about frontiers so i'd occasionally check in with the community for any new info and then, but sonic 2 was the Big one. especially the post credit scene with Shadow.
The second i got home for the theater i gathered up all my Savings at that time and decided it was time to do a full Deep dive into sonic. I bought Both adventure games and Generations. and just played them for the next month or so. and that's when i officially fell in love with the blue blur. and His light hearted and Free but also Serious when the time calls or it I'll do what i want but withing reason attitude.

how i got into this series? this'll be a long one lol, well let it be known that sonic's design is so good that even if my first sonic game was sonic 2 game gear, i still became the fan i am today lol, so far i had only had a n64 and Gameboy, i then go over to my grandmas house, side note my grandma was awesome, she was slightly a gamer herself and is what got me my experiences with gameboys and the game gear, i owe my gaming history to her may she rest in power.
but yea playing her game gear is what got me into playing sonic 2, its just the one that stood out to me, this cool blue dude and this fox sidekick on the cartridge, and now i gotta try and save him with this cool guy, i never even got past the first level but kept coming back because i was drawn to the gameplay style and character, played sonic adventure my first 3d sonic game at a cousins house on his dreamcast and was memorized, eventually getting SA1 DX and the mega collection to finally actually play the classics and the rest is history
his character was always so fun to me, he was cool but he didnt have to try and force out cool sounding shit to be it, he just was, people often said "its just a funny cartoon hedgehog made for kids, isnt him having all this story and fighting these things kinda stupid? and this always ticked me off cus as a kid, the target audience, i was at the edge of my seat when i got to the important parts of the stories, tikal's tribe being destroyed, chaos flooding station square, the ark falling to earth, facing metal overlord like i was invested and i was like 10 or something, still within the target audience and i appreciated the stories, the characters and so on, frontiers really felt like i was getting that back and it didnt really hit me until fighting giganto, we were fucking BACK, i just hope that the revelations amy, knux and tails came to has a pay off at some point (probably a time skip who knows) but yea, thanks for reading lol

to be honest there is something i wanted to tell for a while , which a bunch of statements NOT made by me but from a certain analysis made by a twitter user named Sephy regarding sonic's character after he watched a youtube video named "whay is it about sonic" that i believe every one need to hear :
I highly recommend this video, especially to people who do not understand the problem of characterizations and are really interested in knowing why it is important that they write a "blue rat that runs a lot" well. By the way I will develop a little more
The themes linked to characters that he talks about is not something new... In fact, it is intrinsically linked to shonen manganimes (that's why you have seen me comment several times that Sonic IS a Shonen).
One of the things that characterize Shonen is that they normally seek to convey messages to their audience, which are generally teenagers, through their characters and stories.
The themes tend to vary but they almost always touch on topics such as friendship, self-improvement, teamwork, and what sets us apart from others. Surely some of this is going to sound like the most regulars to the genre
Since there are some ideas that want to be transmitted, the stories they tell cannot give rise to gray areas. There is always a part that represents good, and another that represents evil. No nuances. without chiaroscuro
This is not to say that their characters are flat, it is not that they are always good or always bad. It means that in these stories it must be clear what is right and what is wrong.
What's more, in general they always tend to play with the good/evil duality in the characters.
This is where the video comes in and it explains very well that Sonic himself represents the good and good that is in each of us, and I agree 100%. He places a high value on protecting and saving anyone in need.
From the very Sonic 1 his main motivation is to save animals and at all times he does not hesitate to help those who need it. But he doesn't do it because he wants to be a hero. He does it purely and simply because he wants to. He comes naturally to him.
But I would like to dig a little deeper, because the character is much more unique than just being "the good guy" by virtue of being it and that's it... and thus avoid falling into the trap that everything he does is good just because he does it " the good".
Sonic 1 shows us something more than good and bad embodied in Sonic and Eggman... It shows us nature vs. industrialization... And specifically of a value that has been present in any Sonic work where they have respected the character as it should be: FREEDOM vs CONTROL
Freedom is one of those values that define Sonic, and he carries it as a banner. His actions, to a greater or lesser extent, always have to do with protecting this freedom from those who want to control everything. Just as Sonic considers himself to be someone free and that it is he who decides for his own actions, for him and for him, he also recognizes and what is most important, PROTECTS the right to freedom of others. However, he is not someone naive, and he does not ask or expect anyone to change anything that does not come from themselves, because he himself often does not know what is correct and what is not. He does not brag about being the good guy or believe he possesses the truth or the status of being above others. And this is why he is never seen recriminating the actions of others... he never criticizes or reproaches the past actions of other characters, not even Eggman. He only does what he thinks is right at that moment and if he has to stop someone he does it. This is why he never blames Knuckes for anything that has to do with his duty as a guardian, not even if he decides not to lend him a hand at any given time.
This is why he never reproaches Silver for not having helped him earlier in 2006. And the one that I think is most evident: he never blames Eggman for being the way he is... He knows full well that he is evil and that he wants to control the world, but that does not mean that he violates his right to choose what he wants to be and what want to do. And why is this? Because it is going totally against the theme of freedom that is trying to be transmitted with the character. Sonic knows that he cannot and should not decide for the decisions of others. And this is something that is also reflected in his own vocal theme of Adventure and the theme of Open Your Heart. Sonic proposes this in his own character, a message of freedom and deciding for oneself, quite unique and sincerely, I am very sorry that this, which is so fundamental from the beginning of the character, is being lost

I wholeheartedly agree that Sonic's characterisation and the writing in general fell off hard in the 2010s. Colours (Wii): trash, Lost World: ass, Forces: don't even get me started. But Generations I don't actually accept was nearly as bad as either of those.
That "we beat you every time" line doesn't hit nearly the same as Baldy Nosehair or total bonehead partly because it comes off the heels of the Egg Dragoon fight which is so genuinely spectacular with the nonchalant way he brushes himself off at the end showcasing how he is still that effortlessly cool guy he used to be and in the context of Generations it's a growth moment from how Classic Sonic was startled by the explosion after beating the Death Egg Robot. Really it feels like a moment of reassurance to his younger self that would help him to face all the obstacles in his future with confidence, echoed with his encouragement when he tries to do the boost for the first time and his last line in the game "enjoy your future, it's gonna be great". That both reaffirms Sonic's status as someone who inspires others to be their best selves and grounds him in a way as those self-righteous qualities were ones he'd have to live and learn in order to embrace more fully.
And treating Eggman like a joke regardless of the heinous things he's done is kind of his whole schtick even in better written games like Unleashed "if you played nice I wouldn't have to break all your toys" and Frontiers "whatever you say Dr. Ego-man". If he started treating Eggman like a monster who urgently needed to be stopped no matter the cost, that would be even less like Sonic than calling him a doo-doo head.
So I dunno. Generations, it's not Ibsen but for a game meant to celebrate Sonic in all his glory I personally find it pretty inoffensive. And lumping it in with the other meta games as if it turned its back on everything that came before could not be further from the truth when the whole game is about celebrating the past.
And additionally, Lost World for as ass as it was did contradict the notion that he was entirely one-note in the meta era and could never take things seriously albeit in ways that felt like tonal whiplash. He feels remorse for kicking the conch and letting the Zeti run rampant, and teams up with Eggman in spite of Tails's misgivings out of a sense of personal responsibility for it. When his recklessness gets Tails kidnapped he feels absolutely heartbroken enough so that he even begins to show self doubt which feels very unlike him but also reflects how much Tails truly does mean to him. Right afterwards he bucks the devil may care attitude and confronts Zor with complete seriousness. He likewise shows nothing but genuine concern when it looks like Amy, Knuckles and even Eggman might have actually died.

8:38-9:35 You just compared him to Goku just a few minutes ago. Also, other fictional characters are like that, Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Spawn, Storm, Batman, Nightwing, Link, Spyro, Crash and Mario.

@@AceCardGaming It’s just that you make Sonic out to be this *Diamond in the Rough.* Which Sonic is just that, but there are plenty of other Diamonds that are just like him. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Cause given the opportunity, many other good hearted characters in fiction would do whatever it takes to save the day, just because it’s the right thing to do.

@@porobotboyxxx Sonic has many similarities to other characters across many series’. But he also has many characteristics that are unique to him, or at the very least, are a part of a unique combination of traits. Tie that all together with his abilities and design, and you end up with a pretty unique character.

As a character??? No. movie Sonic is his own thing and I enjoy him a lot after the second movie but in a lot of ways he’s different from what Game Sonic is, was.
As far as game Sonic is now. Idk if it’s the script or Rogers performance but everything that made Sonic cool is missing from him now. Sonic has zero attitude, his snark is so flat, I don’t really buy a lot of his emotional moments. I know they’re going for a more mature Sonic but the best version of that is still Black Knight.
It’s sad too because I love Ian Flynn as a writer but I was really let down by the dialogue in Frontiers for the most part.
We’ve made some progress at least Sonic isn’t a quipping idiot like in the meta era. But the core features of Sonic is gone he’s just kind of a generic hero to me now

I mean, if I had to pick my poison, I much prefer Sonic as he is now, much more than "WohOHoa CoOL oFf thEre EgG Duuude" kinda 90's snark, and more than the "Baldy Mc. Nosehair" kinda immaturity

@@leritykay8911 well, the thing is, a lot of people don't see/hear the difference between the "baldy McNosehair" and the Ian Flynn written scripts. Sonic speaks the way people expect Tails too, but with more douche to him. He's nerdy and its used almost like a punchline 0 something to deliver the writers jokes - but when someone explains something that isn't any more complex than the thing he just said, he says things like "dumb it down for me" and it's inconsistent to the point where I get it if someone says its "trying too hard"

@@leritykay8911 Also, the comment referenced Black Knight as the best version of a mature Sonic. That "WohOHoa CoOL oFf thEre EgG Duuude" Sonic wasn't even remotely a thing in that game or the 3+ games before it. It's honestly a different generation of Sonic... different voice too. Not sure why you took it that way

@@theinktician I didn't say anything about Black Knight or games like these. I only said that, well, I am counting my blessings. I said that I prefer Sonic's Maturity and Serenity in Frontiers over the attitude of the 90's or the hyper-rogerness of of 2010's. I haven't played Black Knight so I don't know enough to make a comparison, but what I'm saying is that Frontiers is already BETTER than A LOT of the things we've gotten.
And don't get me wrong. I do like smug Classic Sonic from the OVA. I do like the snarky dork Sonic from the Sonic Boom cartoon. Part of that is being able to separate them from the mainline Sonic.
