  • From classic literature to pop culture; from pulp fiction to science fiction - American literature is well-represented on postage stamps of the U.S. and other countries. As a topical stamp collection, American literature is a channel for learning about stamps, as well as discovering new writers and books to read. Check these out, and put some in your stamp library.

Things I would love to see a philately channel cover:
-the history of cancellation marks, especially the onset of automation in cancellation in the mid 20th century.
    - The liberty Issue (there's a lot to this one but that's why it's so fascinating).
    - 'dunes' (probably not to most collector's taste, but I find the history there fascinating).
This is a nice video though, never thought to go looking for philatelic youtube before!

The San Marino set of stamps honoring Sci-Fi writers just shows that our postal service is ignoring the genre completely. Also missing are the mystery writers of recent vintage that have passed on. As I have stated in other comments bears repeating. Our postal service is tripping out on poor topics of late (a hideous series of fruit, for example) in stead of honoring famous Americans of the 20th century, writers included. The Bradbury comment was well taken. I concur with you 100%

Here's a bit of good news: The USPS has announced the 33rd stamp in the Literary Arts series will be released later this year, for Ursula K Le Guin bit.ly/38WH3Jg

Excellent as usual. Paul Dunbar, early Afro-American Poet, was omitted. Also: James Baldwin (“Go tell it on the Mountain”), Langston Hughes (Poet), JFK (“Profiles in Courage”), Richard Nixon (“Six Crisis”), Teddy Roosevelt (“Naval War of 1812”, “Oliver Cromwell”), Woodrow Wilson (“On Being Human”, et. al.), Thomas Wolfe, Robert Penn Warren, Winston Churchill, Marianne Moore (Poet) and there are probably others... Thanks again for making educational philatelic videos!

This was strictly about fiction - novels and short stories. There are a few I had to leave out, in the interest of length, though I did have stamps for them: Dunbar, Cather, Warren, Saroyan, Sinclair Lewis. Langston Hughes was shown, though, talking about the Black Heritage series.
      Thanks for watching, Randy.

The science fiction book stamps at the 10:15 mark looks cool.

They are pretty cool. There are 8 more in that set for non-American writers, such as Jules Verne, H.G.Wells, and Arthur C. Clarke.

Ted you didn't include the Maya Angelou stamp. Even more interesting due to the misquote included..

Hi Louise. The focus of this program was on fiction - novels and short stories. I did show the Maya Angelou stamp in the previous episode, Son of Bloopers, where I talk about the misattributed quote.

What about Scott #2538 for William Saroyan? Has a USSR joint issue. Armenia also issued a stamp to honor him.

I had a few more American stamps which I had to o mit, including Saroyan, because the video was getting too long. I forgot about the USSR joint issue. And I will look for the Armenian stamp. Thanks, Stephen.

The movie, Total Recall, is also based on a Philip K. Dick story called, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale."

@@byronsbrain Sort of. He wrote a column on stamps, for a while, for Linn’s Stamp News. Later, he compiled all the columns and published them in book form.
