Album: Superunknown (1994)
Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by lead singer and drummer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands in the creation of grunge, a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle, and was one of a number of grunge bands signed to the record label Sub Pop. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label (A&M Records, in 1988), though the band did not achieve commercial success until they popularized "grunge" in the early 1990s with Seattle contemporaries Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam.
Current Members:
Chris Cornell (Vocal)
Kim Thayil (Lead Guitar)
Matt Cameron (Bass)

I am here beacuse i am scared of the music video
One of the Greatest songs of all time but I don't like the video so much. The song is incredible.
fear not it is merely pictures of horror over music that is meant to rend one's soul.
The video is befitting the subject matter from perspective of its time. Nowdays it looks silly but back than it was quite impressive (almost like it was made by same people who made couradge the cowardly dog)
Same
But more creeped out
Hahahaha
XD...Dude the Music Video is weirder than the Video of Heart Shaped Box from Nirvana
I adore the melancholy reverse-lullaby feeling of this song
What in the hell does that mean?? Yea I love it too.
Perfectly described

+Seiko Shinohara b/c deep down there is so many subconscious subliminal meanings in this song that mean so much of truth for humanity....research it a bit...black hole sun
Colleen Casey omg really
Seiko Shinohara omg yes really....I believe ALL music 'speaks' to our subconscious memories...some can be personal and some can be more collective in nature or both. Do you honestly believe that music is simply here for our 'enjoyment'? If so, that is your choice of course, however I would bet most people would disagree. Perhaps you may have read too much into my comment....anyway. Take Care!
+Seiko Shinohara Cause its Grunge Music and Grunge's amazing
Chris Cornells music still sounds like it could've been released just last week. Timeless is the word.
then you see the vid and its like “this is 80’s or 90’s but its also looking like a modern meme at the exact same time”
I agree, Tails!
Yea. This song is way ahead of its time

@@nsgmrsoul6641 Regardless, the melody is very calming.

@@nsgmrsoul6641 you okay ? You should probably learn the differences of effects that a certain spectrum of frequencies have on a human brain rather than just lyrics. Especially on a baby, just like he said.
“Hang my head, drown my fear, till you all just disappear” will probably always be my favorite set of lyrics in any song
Saw this comment exactly as that part played lol
Me too
This song is about Thelema and the Book of the Law. And that particular verse u wrote is a reference to the Rapture, I believe. It's about opening the gates of hell at the end times. It's about what they are attempting to do on the 8th
I won't lie about this: The music video
is freaky. No joke, I love this song, but
the video is fre-kay!
@calebsawyer0719 yep....like I said. It's about Thelema and where we are Now in the time-line....knowing this makes the video more creepy

Facts fly high Chris
He's really amazing
My grandfather would karaoke everytime we had a gathering at his place. He was such a good singer. Made all the good songs of last ages sound like they were released for the first time again. Christmas isnt the same anymore. I hope he knows how much I miss his voice, i never got to tell him.
I'm so sorry. He is still looking upon you and he knows you love him.
That is a cool grandpa!
You remind me of my grand parents thank youou:]
You can still tell him ... it's our love for each other that still connects us.
I'm sure he is proud of you:)
Artists have a way of tapping into the prophetic without even trying. It’s amazing.
I think Satan writes all the songs. He a pervert
I believe it's part of their gift of music! The Spirit just helped out with these lyrics
Underrated
yes. But it is HE who does HIS works within and thru us. you are absolutely right tho......there is a spirit that is working within and throughout humanity and it manifests in different ways and different places. like, the message in this song? Chris probably had a whole different story behind how he wrote it. lol. same thing with artists. there are always hidden images and many times they tell a story, but most of the time it's about mocking the Truth and Jesus Christ. pay attention and u will start seeing the signs and symbols in literally everything from songs, to art work, to commercials movies, specials....on and on and on. We were born into a War in Heaven and the battleground is within our mind
@@coldsteelrail1123 I agree with everything you just said.
I think the song is a longing for a better world, peace brought from destruction to an unworthy world
i interpreted it as waiting for death to come, perhaps by suicide. It sounds as if a person is suffering with depression and is waiting for the end of the world to wash away the rain like to wash away the tears. I don't know, that's just how i saw it.

Welcome back mate.
How I found this song too XD
I never expected this to be my taste in music but it is, this song is such a vibe
One of the most bizarrely beautiful, twisted, melancholy, and yet seemingly hopeful songs of all time. Small wonder that it's Soundgarden's most iconic song.

the irony in this comment
This song is fucking fantastic.
It means whatever you want it to mean. I've heard people swear it's about heroin, about bringing peace, about Jesus coming, about an abusive relationship coming to an end, or domestic violence in general.
In the end, that's art. Everyone hears the same thing, everyone has their own interpretation of it, yet everyone is struck with their own incredibly powerful emotions.
RIP Chris Corneil.
Agree completely. Even that it is in reference to nirvana.
All beautiful ideas from a beautiful song.

Same
Hang my head, drown my fear,
Till you all just disappear.
Gives me chills every time
The black hole sun symbolizes death, but I don't think he wishes death upon other people, only himself. "My youth I pray to keep" - the only way to do that is to die young. And "Till you all just disappear" says it all. We will disappear to him when he dies. Tragic lyrics from a tortured mind.
When he wrote Like A Stone, the band asked him who it was about. He said it was about death.
“In your house, I long to be. Room by room, patiently. I’ll wait for you there, like a Stone.”
I don't think so I think it's about washing away the pain from being touched by death 🤷🏾
Yes, making death as a freedom from all suffering, pain
He will never disappear from me. I love him.
Guys humbly and respectfully. Songs can be interpreted in any way YOU want, regardless of the writers original or true meaning. Whatever vibe or memories or whatever you attached to this song, in my opinion THATS what the song means. But it is interesting to know what the writers actually saying. hahahhahahhaa
Poor Chris
"No-one sings like you anymore" is so true
RIP Chris Cornell (1964-2017)

R.I.P CHRIS CORNELL :(
Jake Baca i agree with u...
I read that as the lyrics were sung
The 90s was a great decade for music. And this is a prime example
grunge 100
sound garden is the last grunge band now a days fucking lame as sins in 2016 work and all the rest can suck it
Anthony Long I think the 80s were as well, I go to school sometimes and get insulted and they say today's music is "better" than the 90s and 80s...(because they completely forgot what an opinion is)
Ryan Silver you're forgetting seether my guy, look up some of their songs
Anthony Long I was born in 99 and still agree 90s is the best
I'm gonna play this during the eclipse in Texas on monday!
Reminds me of growing up poor in the Westside of Grand Rapids. The grunge scene was still heavy for us, I was born in '96 to an 80s kid so this is all we listened to. We were emo in that household.
I was born in 98 I felt this
Grand Rapids also, early 80's born. This song is deeper than most can imagine.
I was born in 92 and this was my jam
@@jtgpfin It definitely spoke to me even as a little kid. I miss dark grim music like this. Just heavy and nasty.
I really like how they made the chorus more interesting. every time it's repeated it's played with darker instruments and sounds a little more... 'screamy' if you will
It's the details like that that was supposed to be implanted in your brain and thought about and analyzed and we can all have our own opinion about it. Undoubtedly we all share a love of the music how we interpret it is an opinion that we can share but not try to make other people see it our way just enjoy
That's for the Third-eye attendees
This probably isnt the meaning of it, but its how i interpretted it.
When you are very depressed, you look at how happy everyone else is, and to me, i wonder why they are so happy with their lives?...and as sick as it may sound...when im depressed, i wish others lives weren't so happy...wish something would wash away their happiness.
Michael Benedict I thought it was a guy having a bad trip on LSD and him wishing for the black hole sun is him wanting to wake up from it.
That's a very good interpretation, actually.
***** ....no
I like that interpretation. When we're miserable, we don't think it's fair. Even though we know it's wrong, we want everyone else to be on the same level as us. A drowning man will drag someone down with him. It isn't right, but he's drowning.
I've been pretty bummed the last few days and this song just seemed to reflect the way I felt. and would bring me solace. I guess you could call it "Mood Matching" for lack of a better term
“Hang my head… drown my fear… til you all just disappear…” burns a huge hole in my stomach to hear that from you Chris; especially considering…
it’s up to you brock purdy😔

***** Damn that's a good idea, get on that son! My favorite video game of all time might I add.
Too bad I changed my profile pic, but yeah, Majora's Mask is my favorite game aside from Ocarina of Time (It has a good story line and a really lovely lock-on mechanic that is harder to find in other games.)
majoras mask is my favorite over Ocarina just because it's such a deep plot. I don't know if you've seen the game theory video on it, but basically, if you haven't, if you pay attention to the names and the stages of mourning model, Link actually is dead the whole time, and the game is about him coming to accept it and basically easing the souls he knew in his life, and if you notice, a lot of the people from Ocarina of Time look really similar to a lot of different characters in Majoras Mask, like the mask salesman, the Skull Kid, Malon's father, Tingle, or the Gerudos, which isn't a coincidence, the whole theme of the game is redemption, and Link is healing the souls he knew by visiting their Doppelgangers if you will in the afterlife and helping them if you do all the side quests, and the theory is that Link actually dies when he falls down that giant hole in the beginning, because you couldn't possibly survive a fall like that, and when the mask salesman says, "You've met with a terrible fate haven't you?" He isn't talking about him being turned into the shrub, he's talking about him dying. More evidence can be seen for that in that every time you fail to set back the time and the clock runs out and it shows like being killed, the terrible fate phrase comes up, which points to the fact that he is saying the same thing the first time. Plus the name Termina field. Termina obviously means "death" Hence "teriminal cancer." Go watch the video, it's really interesting. Plus the score is absolutely fantastic, I could sit in clock town or Stone Tower Temple or the deku kings palace and just listen for hours. Just because of the plot and the symbolism and how deep this game actually is, it's my favorite. Ocarina of Time is great too, but it's really just about what happens in the game. Majoras Mask is so much deeper even with how short it is.
So very very true.
RIP Chris Cornell, Chester, Staley, Static, Steele, and I'm sure there are plenty others. Music is the only thing I connect this strongly with. They're at peace now

No disrespect, but what the f*ck is mindless memories? Is that like an oxymoron? I can't seem to compute. Danger, danger. 0.0
Possibly, Though you don't need to know a dictionary definition of a phrase to get a sense of atmosphere. Many poets and writers worked this way. It's like my own interpretation. Read it how you will. :)

I actually think nostalgia is becoming less and less common with each generation. 7os 8os and 9os babies are the epitome of nostalgia impact in our lives.
Even though I was born in 1990 I get what you guys are talking about. Things changed so much since 2000's. Like drastic boom and there goes away peace, simple hangout with friends or family, picnics, watching Mtv all day, landlines, cassettes, good economy and in comes cell phones, internet, social media, people staring at phones, unsafe world etc. Kids have no idea how different 20th century was.

Everybody is treating song lyrics like its a big FREAKIN' deal, especially about religion. Now, I am not going against God or anything, but just sit back and enjoy the music, because one day it will be all gone, and we shouldn't get something as silly as religion get in the way of music, because music, in my opinion, is slightly more unique than religion.

Same here. I always thought the effect could be a literal vaccuum around the user, making said user a recluse because everyone around him horrifically decompresses when he feels any emotion. Possibly like a more evil/apathetic version of Fugo.
