This 1965 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport is sporting a super-rare 396 engine, known as RPO code L78. This one was advertised at 425 HP, and it’s backed by a 4-speed manual transmission! I'd like to print a picture of that burnout and hang it, not in the garage but right in my living room. I've never seen a car fry the tires as good as that Impala did.
That is a rare car but i had a coworker who ordered a Chevelle SS396 with that engine. He waited over two months for it. It came with chrome valve covers, a close ratio 4 speed and 4.11 positrac.
He sold it after a year when the judge threatened to send him to jail for too many drag racing traffic tickets. Good times in the 60's.
I love the fact it has the period correct wheels/hubcaps. I hate when people stick those modern, sporty wheels on cars like this. But hey, that's just me. 😊

I can appreciate the OEM wheels/hubcaps but that body would look great in some modern wheels. Not the super-skinny "all wheel" look, but a tasteful wheel/tire combination. Maybe even some modern white walls!

My favorite year SS Impala!
I was a Chrysler fan back in the Muscle Car era, but the cars shown on this channel are top-notch cars that any muscle car buff should be able to appreciate.

This car brings back a lot of memories my uncle had a 65 Impala SS 396 350 HP 4-speed! And as a kid he didn't have to go fast just hearing that rock Crusher transmission was enough for me🤣
I love the big Chevy's of the 60's. The 65 Impala SS 396/425 might be my favorite of them all. The 66 SS 427/425 and 61 SS 409 and 62 Bel Air bubble top 409/409 are favorites of mine too
That burnout at the end was freaking incredible. One of coolest backdrops ever, whoever thought to do that is a genius.
I drove a 65 ss impala for a period of 1981-1999 . Turned it into a daily driver hot rod ! Big rear tires slightly built 350 with perf cam . Hurst 4-speed , headers with side exhaust . Loved that car and miss it every day !
Those 396/402 were no joke.
Back in the day my uncle bought a brand new 65 Impala SS 396 yellow outside black interior automatic beautiful car he gave me and my dad a ride in it when he first got it and that was totally amazed how beautiful that Car was I must have been around 13 years old

Big cars in the 60s rode like riding on a cloud sitting on your living room Sofa. My father had a 65' Ninety Eight Olds Luxury Sedan. That was one smooth riding car. Before that he had a 62' Olds Ninety Eight. The first car I remember we had was a 55' Olds 88 2 door, a real classic today . He had a couple of other cars before that, a 52' Olds 88 being another. Olds was all he ever bought.
My first car was a 65 Impala Convt. White, black top & interior with a 283 2bbl & a 2spd powerglide transmission...wich I purchased back then for $100...

I'm more of a Mopar/Ford guy but the 1965 Chevy's with the 396-425hp/4 speed combo are one of my favorite high performance full size cars ever made..... particularly the 396-425 Biscayne. The 1961-65 409 and 1966-69 427 powered full size Chevy's are all bad ass machines too. The coolest part was that you could order Chevy's hottest big block in any full size body style...even a station wagon. I think I saw a 68 Chevy Kingswood Station Wagon with a factory 427/425hp/4 speed combo. Now that's my idea of a family car
My first car I bought in 1978 & it was light blue 1965 Chevrolet Impala 2 Dr with 327 & 2 speed power glide
I paid $325 & sure wish I still had it..it was a fun to drive & drove smooth..

What a car and what a story
When I gave out of the US Army Signal Corps in 1970, I bought a used 1965 Impala Super Sport 2 door white with the deluxe red interior from Kenny Chevy town in Johnstown. This car had the L78 425 HP engine mated to the X2 speed Hydromatic Transmission. The car was super fast and we loved to go fast and it would shift out of low gear at 80 mph. I literally passed every car on the road, even in a 85 degree curve routinely. This car was the best drifting car I ever drove. The Japanese drifters would have loved this car, it was perfectly balanced for drifting. I could pass cars and drift thru curves at the same time. The car was so fast, I had to steer left of the car I was passing before I floored the 4 barrel carb to pass, otherwise I might crash into the back end of the car in front of me. There were no lines on the highways yet, so passing was at our own risk. I would love to own another one to fly again. My 1972 monte carlo with the 454 engine is not quite as fast.
Loved my 65 impala SS. It was a graduation present from college. Not a 396, but a 283 with power glide. Served my purpose though for 5 years.

I had the 66 model Impala SS 396/325hp/4spd, no emissions, My present to me for surviving my first overseas tour in the Marines. I spent half my leave in the garage getting it ready for heading back to Camp Pendleton. A set of headers ended up being a sportier cam some work on the heads an aluminum intake and a Holly carb to top it. Good thing gas was a $.25 a gallon in them days. A definite Sleeper except for that cam. A big ass trunk to haul all my stuff.

This could be why Chevy/GM struggles today! The 50s,60s and early 70s were the best! The style and the feeling these cars gave us have

My car was white on red with white top just like this one but had the 396 325 L35 with power glide, after rebuilding the car and engine and replacing the power glide with a th350 that car would smoke the tires for as long as you held the gas pedal to the floor. When cruising at 40 and pushing the gas you could watch the speedometer needle sweep across the instrument panel so fast it seemed like it would jump out the end of it. In spite of how strong the engine ran it was truly a gentleman's car. Once you experience a big block chevy making power up to 7K rpm it stimulates all your senses, and you never want to go back to anything less.

I was the second owner of a 1965 SS impala with the 327 motor. It was blue. Paid $899 for it. Sold it when the Navy got me.

I briefly owned (17yo at the time - senior in HS) a '65 SS convertible 327/250 w/4 speed. Body and interior were good. Motor was shot - was told it needed a tuneup - it needed an overhaul! Sold it for what I paid for it - $400. Mine had the fuel economy meter in place of the tach. Beautiful car being depicted.
My first car 65 bare bones Biscayne. Michigan car so a rust hole behind each wheel. It was my mom and Dads first new car after my dad graduated college. I was given it after I came home from Navy boot camp. Good memories.
So that end scene, that was one of those "car lover wet dreams" for sure !
Grew up riding in a 66 caprice wagon with woodgrain and the l-78. My dad had fun with it kids in car or not. Had an engine fire early 70s and a helpful neighbor poured sand to put it out. Straight down the holley carb. It was a fun car. Body was still fantastic when it was hauled away....
That's one hell of an Impala. Now let's see some more 1970 Olds 442 w30, 1970 Olds Cutlass w31 and 1971 Olds 442 w30 cars.

Ha ha that burn out will give a guy chills. I love the 61 Starliner, but I think I could find a spot in my garage for this beauty also.
I had a 65 4dr bright white with crager GT mags which were kinda rare because they had square spokes instead of rounded ones and I painted the spokes copper colored and they were 8" chrome dished and i put a 307 with all the chrome shit with headers and a carter afb and a powerglide beautiful car and used to cruise around the Virginia Beach ocean front with the hood off in 1983 I was 21 nuff said. Even the 4drs had nice lines beautiful cars. Thing about the powerglides is I could hit almost 80 in first gear so it just kept pulling.
I bought one of these when I was 20. Had to have my dad co-sign the loan all the while trying to talk me into something more...responsible. It was used at the time with 35,000 miles. I never even took it for a test drive since hearing it idle in the dealer's shop was all it took. Married with a kid it seemed like the perfect family car. It had the L78 with a four-speed so the natural thing to do was put a highrise long duration cam, tarantula manifold, and a Holly double pumper until I went to college 110 miles from home. If I was really, really careful I could get almost 8 miles per gallon and even though gas only cost $.28 a gallon I still couldn't get home every weekend. I really, really miss that car.
My old friend Jerry MacNeish, owns a triple white 65 SS convertible, but, his is a 396, 325 HP. Other than the interior, and HP, his is a twin, to this. Great car. The 425 HP version was rated at 375 in 66. The hauled ass in a lighter Biscayne. The 66 could be had with a 427, 425 HP.

My favorite Impala of all time the 65 in all of its forms from the 4-door sedan or hardtop to the mighty big block SS. For me it is the best looking car ever made.

NICE BURNOUT! I had a chance to buy a white '65 SS 396 4 speed impala several years ago, but passed due to a lack of funds. I'd sure like to have one.

Now that's a real beauty there ! Love the CHEVY Muscles ! I drive a 66 L78 SS Chevelle myself . It came as a bare bones muscle car , didn't even have a radio . I'm planning a video of it soon .
Now your talkin, this is gotta be a very rare bird. Probably a few more stripped Biscaynes out there than loaded SS’s with L78’s.

Awesome. I tip my hat to you for showing what the car was built for. As rare as it is, it's nice to see that you aren't afraid to get on it. I see so many people restore a car, and then never drive it let alone "abuse" it a little. Too afraid to get rubber on the paint, or a possible stone chip in the paint. It goes from their garage to a trailer, to a show, and back to the garage, never stretching its legs, so to speak. Never really get to enjoy the car anymore. I'm sorry, trophies at a car show can never replace fun behind the wheel.!
In around 2000 I worked for Graham Chevrolet in Santa Barbara. I had an elderly lady come into the lot looking at new Malibus. She told me she had a vehicle to trade. She went on to tell me about her 65 Impala SS convertible, 396, six pack with 40k original miles. She stated it was all original except for a matching colored repaint. I'd love to know what ever happened to that car. I told her that it would probably start at auction at $15k rather than the $1500 she expected a dealer to give her. She left immediately.
I bet the owner was a veteran with that 24 hour clock.

5he 1965 Chevrolet Impal 2as the best looking of all 60s Era Impalas ! Hands down !! I had a aqua marine with white top SS 396 convertible and of all 5he cars I've owned it was the most beautiful !! Had a "Corvette-type" style to it.
Mine was a 283 but ran very well. Miss that car.
I got $20 bucks that says the owner put 2 new tires on it following this.😄

I had a ‘65 327 auto in the 70’s…I was in the Marines and on the weekends, I’d pack my buddies in the back seat, my girl in the front, and a few more in the trunk and off to the drive in we went! Of course, who knew these would go for the money they go for today… These are great cars! Smooth driving and comfortable cruising! but, man I want one again! I sure do!

Drag raced on University Ave in St.Paul MN. Then hung out at Porky's drive in with the rest of the hot rods

1965 and 1966 Impala are the only 2 models of a line to ever sell over a million copies in one years time. By anybody, ever. This was my time frame, and the Ford 390, the Mopar 383, the Pontiac 389 & others were all rated close to 325 HP, but it was the Chevy that was the one to beat. I was an Olds guy, myself, weened on late 50's big blocks, the 371 & 394.
