      Charlie was treated distantly by both his parents, always handled by a nanny and sent off to schools. He had, in fact, an often contentious and bitter relationship with his father. As a result, the Prince needed a father figure and adored his uncle. It was Mountbatten who gave Charlie his "facts of life" speech at an early age and later advised him on his marriage to Diana. Charlie knew that his uncle was bisexual and that was fine with Charlie who was always a bit swish himself.

    What needs to be made plain here (though it is not) is that the Prince of Wales was here on a visit to Ireland in the company of his wife, and is speaking at an arts centre in Sligo. In this we are four years on from the 2011 State Visit paid by Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinbugh to Ireland, at the invitation of then President Mary McAleese. The point to be stressed here is the huge amount the Royal Family have done both officially and spontaneously to nurture and improve Brtitish-Irish relations, something that is of considerable practical and emotional importance to most people in the British Isles, and something that Charles, his parents and other members of his family (including Lord Mountbatten himself) have proved uniquely qualified to do and good at doing. The reconciliation has involved sacrifice, honesty and forgiveness on their part (albeit leading the way for the rest of us with hearts most likely hardened over many years of death and violence); and it is abundantly clear that what they have been doing is God's work. As the Lord Jesus would wish, the British and Irish must extend their love and forgiveness to each other - it can be done, and the benefits in terms of warmth, wisdom and wonder can be plain for all to see.

    Lord Mountbatten planned the Dieppe Raid of 1942, and when you think of all the allied soldiers who were blown up because of his arrogant stupidity, it's almost poetic he died in a similar manner.

      Marvin M. Messier The Dieppe raid was necessary to keep the Russians on side. The Russians criticised the British for doing nothing in the early war, whilst they suffered. Losing the Russians as an ally would have proved absolutely catastrophic during the war. Of course it is terrible that Dieppe caused the deaths of so many but Dieppe was essential.

      @@queenelizabethii8216I agree that some kind of aggressive action was warranted, however, the plan and execution of the plan was completely suicidal, and you could almost chalk it up to a callous disregard for human life. I suppose hindsight is 20/20, but when you evaluate the strategy - it was a very amateur / foolish type of raid. I don't know how Mountabatten slept at night, knowing he was responsible. I suppose one coping strategy is fool oneself into believing it was a resounding success. Nevertheless, it must've been demoralizing in the extreme for the 5000 Canadians fighting there. What a bloodbath.

    • @queenelizabethii8216
      @queenelizabethii8216 4 роки тому +3

      Messy Marvin I don’t disagree that the reason for the failure at Dieppe was poor planning. However, it wasn’t just Lord Mountbatten that was responsible for the planning of the raid. He should be held accountable for that but no more so than every other military leader who has planned suicidal raids. Churchill, Haig and Major General James Brudenell should respectively be held to the same degree of blame for catastrophic results in Gallipoli, The Somme and The Charge of the Light Brigade. The devastating nature of planning a military raid or invasion is that you are the ultimate cause of the deaths of many young men.

    I like Charles. Everyone loved his young wife like we adore hot Hollywood types that love attention.
    But prince Charles took a backseat to her grandstanding, in my opinion.
    Diana's secretary must've been busy informing the press that she would be at this and that hospital or aids clinic every time to curry favor with the public.
    While Charles seemed to do it out of duty, with less press. Again, in my opinion.

      In my opinion Charles is a wacko that was still dating that dog Camilla.. Of course he’s genuine in this speech he’s talking about his dead Uncle/Grampa.. Dianna was the people’s princess and one hundred percent kind and loving. Helping rid land mines and touching aids patients as a role model to help the stigma they have.. Yea she might not have put the king of England first all the time wiping his a;$ like he is used too but she put her people and children first cant say the same for him when phone conversations leaking of him “wanting to feel up Camilla’s tank” and no I do not mean gas tank... It may just be your “opinion” but mine is Charles is a clown and Camilla a thirsty home wrecker.

    The Earl Mountbatten was frequently accused of being a vainglorious man , also prone to arrogant pomposity and pompous arrogance . Furthermore, he harboured an understandable resentment opposite the way in which his father Lord Battenberg was treated during WWI - a man himself , devoted to the then British Empire, the Monarchy , the British Isles and the Royal Navy . The impact of Lord Battenberg’s humiliation had a marked and determined affect upon Louis - causing him to strive harder , prove the family loyalty and to achieve the post of First Sea Lord , in his fathers name . It encouraged his determination to “ get things done “ , to exercise “rank “ opposite govt ministers and so forth and to impress upon them , his undoubted capabilities , which would have been helpful , had he not always been in such a rush . And despite the degree of his wife’s “champagne socialism “ (which some thought bordered on communism) to which he succumbed , I strongly doubt that he would have approved of the state of this country today , to include the decades of naivety shown by The Queen and the general conduct and direction of the RF , today. This, possibly a subject for an “unhampered “ and honest analysis and appraisal by , perhaps , the highly estimable Hugo Vickers ? Imo

  • @philipford6183
    @philipford6183 4 роки тому

    Louis Mountbatten was a remarkable man - very much a case of 'the right man, at the right time, in the right place'. From his early inter-war naval career to his time as Supreme Commander Allied Forces SEAC (Southeast Asia, WWII), and then as the last Viceroy of India, he was uniquely pivotal in so many landmark events in 20th-century history. He was a vain, often pompous man, yet by all accounts, he was also much-loved by the men who served under his command, and he was a very effective communicator. In the post-war independence struggles across Asia and SE Asia, he was a public supporter of the break with British colonialism, often in the face of heated criticism back home in the UK.
