      @@user-cx5jj2yv3p This is speculation, but I can imagine a shitty childhood with multiple siblings where the one that got the least attention from family was missing on critical social nurturing, or even basic nutrition went only to the favored siblings, while the black sheep yada yadas through life learning that faking illness = attention/sympathy = increased liklihood of "success" in life. These lessons could go on to never be corrected well into adulthood, and a little monster within her that had convinced her, attention = survival, this thing is going crazy in her as she got none of the places she wanted to in life. She just needs more attention and people will help her. People will see her suffering, and who suffers more than a mother who's child is ill? Oh, and then there's the option of getting disability, or a charity assistance for struggling with this sick child. Time and habit turns one sick woman into 6 sick children who will go on to have their own problems in life, and lessons to learn about life without a mother, about who you can trust. A web of family members tied to this anchor of a woman who would see the world around her dragged to hell.

They tried to push hard on the voucher program to get as many kids out of public schools as possible to starve public schools of funds and force them to shutdown. This is the ultimate plan to completely remove federal money from public education, which will disproportionately impact low income communities. High income neighborhoods have the tax base to not need federal tax money for public schools, and have the best public schools as a result. This further feeds more profit for the private school industry. Republicans have been trying to kill public k-12 for decades.

I educated my kids on the dangers and always was honest with them about the effects. I told them that with smoking, it was better to never start. As a child, concerned teachers asked me if I smoked because my clothes smelled like cigarette. When my parents struggled with money, they still had to spend insane amounts of money on cigarettes. Sometimes, they chose it over bills or other needed items. I watched them attempt to quit at times, suffer, and ultimately fail. I've never touched a cigarette in my life and I've never been so much as been tempted, considering I was up close and personal with the downsides.

Appropriate education without zealous demonization has been far more effective on the younger generations. If what you do effects others in a negative way you don't have the freedom to do that anymore. Both freedom & banning is perspective.
      Also, your last comment is irrelevant & disrespectful. They stated their opinion just fine. There was no need to take it to a personal level and be rude.

      For people who aren’t in the medical field, Münchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental health disorder in which a caregiver creates the appearance of health problems in another person, typically their child, and sometimes (rarely) when an adult simulates an illness in another adult partner. This might include altering test samples or injuring a child. The caregiver or partner then presents the person as being sick or injured. Permanent injury or death of the victim can occur as a result of the disorder. The behaviour might be motivated by the caregiver or partner seeking sympathy or attention. The cause is unknown, and it’s very difficult to treat.

Luckily no one had tested positive for West Nile and overnight mosquito spraying should've killed any mosquitoes (and bugs) in the affected area. Making a drug illegal does not eliminate drug use. Banning cigarettes will put more people in jail, especially the marginalized, and do little else. Did no one learn anything from marijuana? The way to combat smoking and smoking-related deaths is through education, culture, and disencentives that don't restrict people's ability to live their lives, make bad decisions, and support themselves comfortably.

    • @Bunnybananabunny
      @Bunnybananabunny 24 дні тому +1

      You're misunderstanding the word banning. A bad doesn't mean the same as illegalize. In Finland where I live smoking is banned in a lot of places, for example many residential buildings have banned smoking on your own balcony.
      No one is going to prison for smoking, you'll get fined (and if you're being a dick and breaking the no smoking on the blcony rule one too many yines, you might lose your house (even if you legally own it)).
      The point of banning is basically to inconvenience smokers as much as possible. If they're not allowed to smoke on the balcony, the bus stop, outside the store, on the sidewalk, in parking lots, in bars and restaurants etc etc, it's gonna be a pain in the ass to find a place to smoke. The main thing is also to stop people from starting in the first place, which is of course easier if there's less smoking people on the streets or in bars etc.

So they can't smoke outdoors, or in their own homes, or in any designated establishment, because of laws preventing businesses that allow smoking indoors. So where exactly are they supposed to go in this hypothetical? I'd probably support that if they simultaneously started allowing establishments where you could smoke indoors too or making it so renters can smoke inside the place they rent

    • @HK47_115
      @HK47_115 29 днів тому

      @@amentrison2794 There are establishments that exist where people can go to smoke and hang out, but they're few and far between. Usually the most common establishments being a bar that also allow smoking. No for primarily talking about tobacco that's really the only designated establishment. As other establishments that do exist are for potheads. And again they're very few and far between. That's not to say if somebody was also tobacco smoker they probably wouldn't be allowed to smoke in such an establishment, but for somebody who's not into tobacco or vice versa, they may not be very comfortable with it.
      Ask for smoking in public areas, I really think this depends on what people mean. Because say if it's just somebody walking down the block on the sidewalk having a smoke, I think it's stupid to say you can't walk down your block and smoke a cigarette.
      But if it say like a public park where people will bring their families and I can understand such a ban in such a public area. I also find it funny when people say we should ban them in public buildings as if that's not already a thing. Not even just through the legislation, like it'll just be banned by The Establishment itself.
      I never heard of any public establishments whether it be a store, a restaurant, a gas station, a grocery store, or government establishments like a town hall, dmv, or social security office ever allowing people to smoke in such establishments.
      So such a regulation would not even be necessary. Can I see some people want to ban people from smoking in the cars which is just stupid. Because as you said if they're not allowed to smoke in their home or even on their porch outside, then where else could they possibly go to smoke
      It's not like weed or alcohol where it affects people's motor skills to the point where they wouldn't be able to drive. People can smoke a cigarette and drive just fine. It's not even like it would be a distraction because it's just between their fingers.
      In this reminds me at one point in time when the ATF wanted to put a regulation where people weren't allowed to smoke in their front or back yard or even on their outside front or back porch. Which is just so freaking stupid.

    Honestly, the idea that my kid won't be able to buy cig when they turn 18 (Australia) is something I'm all for. I'm hoping I can make sure he doesn't start young like I did.
    I watch my family smoke as a kid, and it normalizes it for me, along with a few other bad habits. I'm trying to do the same as my family and normalize it for my kid.
    We know smoking is bad, but we still do it. If I was unable to buy them at first I be mad, but after I got used to it, I would be very thankful that I had stopped. More thankful if my kid never started

      Your kid probably has already picked up on your bad habit. They can smell it and notice you going outside to smoke. Just having the smell in their noses when you walk back into the room normalises it. If they ban cigs then people, and probably your kid when they’re 20 years old and out partying, will get cigs illegally and who knows what the fuck will be in them at that point? No matter if they are illegal or not people will still seek them out and try to buy them. It’s so much safer if they can get them legally and know exactly what is inside it. I understand where you are coming from but you can’t blame your addiction on how easy it is to access the drug. I don't know where you draw the line on crimes where children are the victim, but it's easy and popular to go overboard. I think in this case it's clearly justified. Not to this level for just any crime though.
      The point is to try and bring people back into society (ostensibly at least) provided they correct their actions and don't do it again.
      Although I'm not sure that you can ever do that with some types of crimes, I think some speak to deeper passions in the criminals that aren't likely to change. My sentencing suggestions for those would be much harsher since there's really no chance for redemption as I see it.

    I can speak on the tobacco issue. I have a PhD in health promotion (a public health subfield) and I worked on public research analyzing specifically those tobacco 21 policies you mentioned. Any sort of tobacco policy needs to walk a fine line between reducing smoking exposure and initiation, keeping the tobacco industry accountable, and maintaining personal liberties. There's a rift in the public health field between those who want to do more hardline restrictions on tobacco use such as complete elimination of traditional combustible and e-cigarettes through bans and then there are people more in the camp of wanting to promote e-cigarettes to replace combustible products and to let people make their own health decisions with smoking similar to how people can make their own dietary and drinking (of alcohol) choices. There's usually not a good balance between things because it will either be too restrictive with bans or too permissive with easy access for youth for e-cigs and nicotine products. My personal opinion is policy should be there to at least restrict it indoors and in cars so those who don't choose to smoke aren't exposed to other's smoke, restrictions on advertising for big tobacco and nicotine product companies on social media since that was a big driver of early e-cigarette use in youth and big tobacco will try to get away with pretty much anything if you let them, and restrictions for those who are too young and meaningfully punish those who knowingly sell to minors.

There's a woman on UA-cam that told her story of reading a magazine article about a recovering anorexic, and that drove her to anorexia because she thought that being ACTUALLY sick would make her family care about her more (it didn't, and she also didn't HAVE to become a real anorexic to get her family to care, but she decided to commit to it) because the family of the girl in the article reacted with the love and care she craved from her own family. Anecdotally, I was a teen during the Tumblr boom of 2010-2012, and A LOT of girls developed various unhealthy behaviors because of what certain blogs were posting. A friend of mine turned to self-harm because of how romanticized it was on tumblr and fanfics during the Demi Lovato era of Disney. Some kids are simply more comfortable saying how bad things are for them, but other kids are just easily influenced for a variety of reasons, and they either develop something they didn't have, or evolve worst behaviors than what they would had they never heard about them. Both factors need to be considered.

      I think people do know that, it's more about the choice being made for people.
      I stopped smoking tobacco when my state (Masshole here) made cloves illegal because they're "flavored tobacco products" and am very aware that my health would be worse otherwise but I still don't like that it was forced on me. Dumb? Yup. But it's how people feel about a lot of things.
      We could make arguments for health and start banning caffeine too but that addiction is encouraged because it good for ✨productivity✨
      I'm not even saying not to do, moreso that I get why people take issue with it and find that where the lines are drawn to be arbitrary as far as "for health" arguments go.

      This. I'm currently quitting weed, going through some pretty shitty withdrawal, and working in an area where I interact with a lot of addicts. The best defence against addiction is knowledge and access to support. I've never met an addict who wants to be an addict, only people who never learned healthy coping skills, that are trying their damn hardest, and didn't know what they were getting into when they picked up their first substance (usually alcohol - which has a higher chance of killing non-users than any other drug - but no one wants to talk about banning that). And when they have to get their substance of choice from the black market, no matter how comparatively/relatively harmless (psilocybin, LSD, weed, and now nicotine), they put themselves at risk of having the drug cut with something much worse (ie: psilocybin with random poisonous mushrooms, LSD with NBOMe, weed with fentanyl, etc).
      The problem of drug use and addiction is so much more nuanced and complicated than simply its accessibility, and all aspects need to be weighed fairly or the opioid epidemic will just keep getting worse. And I'd much rather die from nicotine than fentanyl - which kills you well before you truly die.
