if you can't move the main photo folder from external hard drive, what happens when that drive begins to nailer you want to buy a better larger external drive?
Hey so I have a question about storing your catalog on an external drive. Would it be best to store it on the computer hard drive? What if you stored it on an external hard drive but then filled that drive up, got another hard drive and wanted to put more pictures into that catalog? Do you just copy and paste the catalog to the new hard drive?
Hi Frank. Question about the overexposed photo you chose not to import. Am I right in thinking that because it's a RAW file you could have fixed the overexposure in Lightroom? Or could you only do that with an underexposed shot? Thanks!
Hi Sue. Not exactly. You can rescue a partially over exposed photo. However a fully blown out image simply has no detail and cannot be rescued. It is easier to rescue shadow detail in an under exposed photo but pretty impossible to rescue blown out highlights. Looking back at the video I guess I could have imported the over exposed image as it wasn't fully blown out. However I simply used it to demonstrate how to avoid importing photographs using the uncheck box. Hope this helps : )

In the first video I saw of yours (Understanding the Lightroom Catalog System), you said that when you inport photos, you use the method to keep the original extension and then have the XMP file that tracks changes. but in this video, you said that you import and convert to DNG. I see that the first video was in 2016 and this was in 2019. Have you changed your process? If so, why? Also, are DNG files somewhat universal? I.e. what if I ever decide to use another Lightroom-like software? I've finally got a camera where it makes sense to create raw images and I'm thinking of beginning to use Lightroom as part of my flow instead of just Photoshop. They are just family photos. Just trying to weigh out the process vs just using Photoshop. I think it would be better since it tracks what I've done to each photo and doesn't mess with the original. I like that. Anyway, I hope to hear back from you.
Hi. Yes I now use the convert to DNG option.To be honest either is fine, but I guess switching to DNG is keeping up with the times. DNG files can be opened in Photoshop too so I believe they would be fine in non Adobe software. Thanks for the question and take care. F
Slow is OK for a lot of people. There are faster tutorials out there I am sure. Fast or slow, we are lucky to have great teachers like this guy who spend hours making video tutorials which we then watch for free.

Hi Crystal. No Just one Catalog and simply import the photographs into the Catalog.
