In Salem, Oregon school closes for snow or ice on roads because we are not set up for buses to be chained up. The other reason is schools do not get federal funding if attendance is below a certain number so they would rather cancel school and tack a day on the end of the school year. With the risk of injury for the school district this is the safe plan.

When I worked in a school cafeteria, I ALWAYS checked lunch accounts every morning to make sure all kids were able to eat. I put out over $100 a month to ensure that no kid was hungry. 😊

Here in North Carolina, schools close if it even looks like snow. Buses aren't equipped with chains, and most southerners don't have enough experience driving in snow. Many blessings to the Somers family.

My mom used to drive my bus in the late 80's. We would be leaving school after it started snowing or sleeting. You're right, if they think it might snow, school closes.

I remember after living in other parts of the country and then we moved to SC, even if there snow ferries school was close where it was different in Nebraska or even in Delaware. Just a couple of years the city of Tucson had to shut down the whole city and even block all roads and bridges cause they are not equipped to handle anything that is freezing temp

My son is significantly impacted by autism. Special education is a joke here in Oregon. National news has recently picked up the story that basic reading, math and writing skill requirements are no longer needed for regular education students to graduate from hight school. If that is the case for regular education students, it really shines a light on the education that children with special needs can expect from the Oregon Department of Education. It's basically babysitting. We began a charter/homeschool program three years ago and our son is thriving. Parents-there are so many alternatives out there.

Here in West Michigan we close schools during blizzards, below zero wind chill. But when I was school they hardly ever closed schools here. But I swear during the winter our granddaughter has a lot of snow days in January & Feb but we live in the country & they don’t like buses to run on our roads since we are the last to get snow plows. I grew up in the City so like I said they never closed schools I walked to school or my parents drove us

I work for a school district here in the Dallas area. Our kids get breakfast and lunch. We have grants so breakfast is free for all. Of course, low income can qualify for free or reduced lunches. Of course many children fall through the cracks and in our economy it's been difficult for so many. We are blessed with cmthe community that pays the debt. No money is exchanged. Our students have accounts. People can donate to student accounts. Children can "charge" their account so they always eat. I've put money on some accounts. We are blessed.

We use to homeschool through connections academy years ago. Kids liked it. They would have meet ups and go roller skating amusement park at the end of the school year. My son wrestled from 5 years old to second year of college. He still was on the local wrestling team when home schooled. They loved it and I got to spend more time with them plus I made healthier choices with lunches at home for them. 😊

I love VLOGMAS! I grew up in Connecticut- we had school with 2 foot snow drifts. In Georgia, school gets canceled if it’s icy out . We homeschooled, so we had flexibility.

    • @accountforwastingtime
      @accountforwastingtime 7 місяців тому

You wouldn't want to drive on ice in Georgia LOL when it's a state that gets snow at most once, maybe twice a year you become to see why school just gets cancelled. The infrastucture isn't even set up for it to get that cold, they don't even sell snow tires let alone the tires not really meaning much for ice (esp in parts of Georgia that are mountainous, too. It doesn't even get cold enough in most of the state for kids to need very heavy coats routinely. So if the freak storm does happen, you betcha they close! You don't want out in the chaos that is Georgia In Snow.

It is a blessing to my heart your helping with school lunches, here in Juneau the community posted how difficult it is to turn any child away from a hot lunch on a cold day.Our cold days are bad, not quite like yours but still, and then the cost is so high. So bless you ,bless you bless you and thank you! I walked to School in Anchorage in 66 in nylons and dress, no pants for girls then and frost bite got my thighs and knees, it was only 25 below but wind chill took it to 50 below. It wasn't that far but it was tooo far for me. It has become alot warmer since then, and clothing has come a long way . Thank you again for helping so many !

Then when he recovered and my 3 boys and I could go back home I just continued! I put them in our towns soccer program and my youngest was in 4h. He showed market goats, market hogs, pygmy goats, fancy chickens, fancy rabbits, ducks and even a turkey once. Then he did rifle, shotgun and archery. He took State in archery 4 years! So he was socialized!

🇨🇦 schools shut down at -45c which is around -49f. We have snow days but that's for buses. If you can make it even in ice, normally classes as usual but fewer in class.
Glad you could help the kids. Often in the past, that debt was expected to be paid off and eventually the school wouldn't feed the child more than a roll.
There is a large gap in the qualification for reduced fees and those that can afford a box lunch or meal. Those children slip through that gap in many communities.
We sponsored a few kids after talking to the principal. The lunchroom always knows the families that are struggling.
    It's worth fewer Starbucks.

I’m totally reliving growing up in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Schools “closed” at -40c which is -40f. In quotes because the schools remained open in case someone didn’t get the message and went to the school. Without the doors open it would be bad so “closed”. Funnier is the cool dressing teens. Was soooo spot on. I would freeze in jeans, and “bommer” jacket and definitely no gloves/mits, scarf or hat. Hahaha. We didn’t have a lunch program in our schools. I got frostbite walking home for lunch one day on my ears, toes and fingers. Worst pain. Thanks for the memories 😊

My kids school has a “snack bin” if you finish your lunch but are still hungry you can ask for something from there, in the past it was bars but now they have yogurt and fruit also. We can give money towards that though our online portal!

I sent one and have your address in my address book!! I remember in grade school having discounted/free when in grade school. I LOVED the pizza at school! Reminds me of schools in MT and ND! Busses would run, but sometimes it would be a late run or not run at all, but City kids would have to go. I rode the bus for a few years and one day during one school year, busses weren't running and I couldn't get in either and I lived along the main road between town I lived in and the next town. We couldn't get out of our driveway, but a neighbor (if I remember right) came and plowed our yard and I was able to get into town later to make it to choir practice for church.

I’m a lunch lady here in Michigan. Our governor passed a bill this year that all public schools have free breakfast and lunch. When I first started it was Covid so it was free then too. Last year was pay for your meal. They were allowed to go a certain amount in debt. I work at the high school and it was $15. Less for the younger grades because they have less options and it cost less. If they were at the $15 mark they could get a cold sandwich, fruit and milk. In my option, we are making these kids go to school, they should be fed. Everywhere always.

Hi from Norway!🇳🇴 School's don't close here....snow no problem, cold, not an issue 😂 The school bus might have a problem on the back roads. I have never experienced that the school closed before i was an exchange student in the US😅 SO.....the only thing that closed school's in Norway, was a global pandemic 😷
It's public school's in Norway, not to many private and definitely not many homeschooling.....
    Marry Christmas 🎄

I can support Bert. We're in Wasilla, we met our daughter's family for our grandson's birthday. Their middle and middle school son wore shorts and it's been hovering around 0 to 10° here. So I have seen the nonbundle folks, not just kids too. My husband who grew up in Anchorage, he doesn't wear a jacket to Walmart, he wears shorts and a t-shirt. I moved here from So. Cal 2 years ago, I super bundle, and I found you to find out what it's like here. Absolutely love it here! And Merry Christmas!❤🎉😊

I grew up in a tiny town in North Central Montana. Our school was always the hold out when others were shutting down. Never because of cold temps, typically only closed if a hard snowstorm knocked out electricity. Even then, the "in town" kids would have to go for half a day, while anyone else that rode the bus could stay home. I was only 2 blocks from the school so I never got to stay home 😂

It’s was interesting listening to you speak about Alaskan schools. Our son was a senior when Covid struck and his school closed for the remainder of the school year and we turned to remote learning. graduation was held outdoors with students walking across a stage getting their diplomas. We had to go in front of the stage driving by in our car. Our planned graduation party had to be cancelled at the town park. That was in NY in ‘20. We moved to Florida 7/20 and he started some online college courses. I do know Florida schools close for hurricane warnings. Other than that, nothing. Strange seeing school buses with AC and tinted windows 🤣. Thanks for sharing and continuing your acts of kindness this holiday season. Good night from 70 degree Florida😊
