Peter!! I loved that video! 🎉. Im currently working on finding a practicum placement. And I don't know where to start. I was thinking a government job in social work. I only have school for experience. Feeling alot of anxiety. I found your video and it cheered me up.
Thanks for the comment! Theoretically that should be easy to find. Hiring a student for, say, 10 hours a week is easily done through the Casual employment mechanism and very cheap for gov. But current times couple with social work field - that will be tough. As I’ve suggested to so many, start with geds and see if you can find a contact using keywords or appropriate dept/agency. Or start with twitter. Twitter is a good place to find people and follow a trail. Think like Bourne.
Hello Peter, thanks for putting this video together. I appreciate it. Your cold email strategy works well in getting open and reply rates high. But I get asked to put my application in the AST system and I wonder if this is a method of dismissal?
Usually it is. But it really depends on the context. The objective of the cold email is to get a reply. Once you get the reply your new objective is a phone call. Target set. Goto work!
Hello Peter. Excellent video. The main problem is how to find the hiring managers contact information. I am interested at IRCC, but it's hard to find who is the hiring manager in my city.
Hi, interesting approach. I never imagined that myself, but it sounds really realistic. I just applied for a job in cybersecurity, the recruiter sent me a link for a technical test, I think I did fine. They advised that the whole process might take up to one year. I just want to know their timelines and if they will provide feedback during the process.
The process is often long. One year is very real for many competitions. There are very few questions answered during that time and feedback can be non-existent. But it depends on the hiring manager (contractor they've hired to run the competition). Like I said, the process is inhumane. Lol.
Very true. I had apply for IT position at one of the provincial government. As of now i am at 7 month of waiting right from applying to last inrerview round . Currently I am at last stage that is reference check.
Hi Peter, I just got in the pool. Where can I find the HR personnel who I can send email to. The pool I'm in is only specific to one agency. So is that mean I cannot look for other agency?
Hey Peter. Thank you so much for great content. I recently applied to a few jobs on the gc jobs websites. I am very interested in the same the status says that they have retained my application but i guess that means i am in the pool. Listening to your videos i believe i should email the recruiters or people working in the same role. Quick question how to reach out to these people should i use linkdein and put those key words?
You’re in the pools! Congratulations. Yes. That’s exactly what you should do. Good luck! I would be happy to provide more targeted insight; DM me through my website. robotsxrobots.com
Hey Peter, i had applied to the IT position at GNWT currently, I am at last stage of hiring i.e reference check the whole process took about 7 months and still going. Do you have any idea how long hiring process go for such government jobs. I read some of the reddit posts and they all mentioned that such jobs could take 1 year to be hired. Much appreciate for your insight on this one. Btw Great content.
It took me 2 years to get hired. Ridiculous. But mine is an outlier. It usually takes one year. Be patient. Pretend you forgot and keep applying to other jobs. Good luck!!
Hello! I find your video very insightful! I will try this method. I just graduated from a post grad certificate in Information Security. I have a few questions. 1. What method can you suggest in order for me to find the emails of the hiring manager? 2. What is the appropriate email subject if you are doing cold emails?
Peter, I am a 16 year professional in the private life & health insurance sector in US & Asia, plan to move back to Canada (Canadian passport holder) and looking to explore opportunities in Canadian government roles; my professional experience is very specialized and since Government roles are very new territory to me, i would like to research a bit further to maximize my chances instead of blindly just apply many roles and waste energy and time, would you have any advice? thank you so much!
That really depends on your goals. Do you want to stay in the same "domain" or in an area that allows you to use transferrable skills? I think the first step is to answer the question: what can you offer to the world/gov/others. Once you have a good understanding of that, then you can see who needs this type of offering. BUT and it's a big but, if there is a problem that you want to help solve, then the self assessment will come second. Hope this helps!
Any tip for canadian looking for federal job opportunity with disability? I'm hoping to get a job, but as a person with physical disability, it's been very hard.... it seems like publis service agencies are only places that remotely care about employment equity... but I'm having trouble making my application stand out... any tip would be appreciated
Unfortunately, they also don’t care. It only seems that way on paper because of public perception. People are the same everywhere. They discriminate. They’re bias. They’re selfish. I would do the same as any other person. Focus on your strengths
How I can contact u Peter ?! I have applied couple of roles and my application got retain , couple of roles I really think that I m good fit for the roles , can u pls help me with the guidance for the next step

Subject has to be you. Be creative. But at the end of the day subject doesn’t matter. It’s about how many words you use
