Yes, even if auto throttle is active, the thrust can still be manually controlled by the pilots at any time
I'm guessing the boeing 737 thurst levers work differently?
On the a320, with the thrust levers in the same position during the entire flight, the autothrottle controls the amount of thrust electronically depending on what is required.
On a 737, the position of the thrust lever directly controls the thrust amount from that engine and the autothrottle physically moves the levers to the required position.
