- EEEEK, where has October gone?? Less than ten days until NaNoWriMo starts and I. Am. Not. Ready!
It took a bit of spiraling & trial and error to figure out what my "streaming project" should be, but I think I've figured that out finally!

Do you keep physical track of your NaNoWriMo progress? (Maybe in a bullet journal or with stickers?)
Since I already changed my mind -- on rolling the dice to decide what to do -- let me know if you've ALSO changed your mind from your original prep plans. (As much as I loved the dice roll last year, as soon as I started streaming A Closet Full of Cauldrons, I knew that's what I needed/wanted most to work on!)
How do you plan on rewarding yourself for meeting/exceeding your daily or weekly goals? Or even a reward for participating and keeping going throughout the month, I'd love to know!! (I think my reward is going to be getting to start an entirely new story once I finish these two, lolol.)

This year I’m writing a cozy mystery novel for NaNo! There’s a librarian, her Great Dane, a murdered vet, and an animal smuggling ring. I’m really excited to get the words on the page!

As someone who is also fine-tuning their draft, I get the whole needing to get the word count down to accepted market range. It's difficult because I personally love books around 120k, and yet the fear that doing so will kill my chances in the query trenches is strong. But I think ultimately it's the story that really maters. Try your best to cut what you can, give it to others for feedback, and I believe that if the book is ready, whatever the word count ends up being, it's meant to be. At least, that's what I'm aiming for.
Absolutely!!! That’s exactly what the girls on the retreat told me too. Sometimes we need to hear it from others. Excited to make it the best it can be and focus on that alone. :) good luck to you too!!
One of the MANY things I love about you is you make me feel so much better about having multiple projects in the works at a time. I start to think I have no business calling myself a writer when I have so many ideas in my head, and nothing finished. But I love working on all of them. 🙂
I guess I did actually finish something, but I didn’t like how it turned out. I’m calling that one a practice run. 🙄😁
Congratulations on finishing though!!! That's huge and should be celebrated. It's the artist/creator in us that wants to tinker and make it better, so take all the practice runs you need!
What a treat! I'm so glad you are worrying LESS about the length of your standalone fantasy. Aren't those books heavy on page count anyway??? Can't wait to read it. Meanwhile, thanks to Zara's stream, I finished the short paranormal this morning. Going to send it off to my editor. And I still have 9 days in October, so I will finish the edits on my 2nd Lulu Wells lesbian romance. I'm obviously feeling more like myself with every passing day. This week: I will drive my car!!! Big deal, since my right leg has been the problem.

I think I'm going to rewrite my children's story this NaNoWriMo. I'm afraid I've put in too many ideas and not given them the time and space to unfold and create conflicts between my very different and often peculiar characters.

I think I'm gonna start a new project this NaNo. I was kinda hesitant because I have another novel that I'm working on right now, but I'll just finish it in December. I like to track my progress with a Bubble Tracker. Sarra Cannon has a cool one in her Preptober Planner :)

Reminding me that I haven't even officially joined this years NaNoWriMo yet... I have not done any work this Preptober at all, but I am aiming to finish OSASAOIT, (it's currently 60k. I haven't even reached midpoint. I'm scared of the length.) I love seeing your critique partner system at work, I can't wait to be able to do the same.
This Preptober (which is actually my first) I was planning on prepping 5 projects but I literally got some new story ideas and some ideas for some old projects on October 1st! So, those 6 projects quickly became 8, then they became 7 at the end of week one. Then they became two, but now I finally know what my NaNoWriMo 2023 Project is going to be! Now I just have to do some finishing touches on it for it to be ready to go on November 1st! As for how I'll be keeping track of my NaNoWriMo progress, I'll use my bullet journal for it. I still don't know what my daily/weekly rewards are going to be but if I win NaNoWriMo, my reward is gonna be a new laptop because my old one had a little accident early this year and I haven't replaced it yet, so if I win that'll be my reward and also my birthday gift from me to myself because my birthday is on the first week of December. Starting a new story sounds like a great reward, so maybe that'll be one of my daily/weekly rewards, prepping my projects and have them all ready to go on January 1st. An End of Year Prep-A-Thon? Outline-A-Thon?
PS: Your current problems with Project Death are making me a little worry for my NaNoWriMo project because it's also a standalone fantasy that is trying to grow a little too much. Oh, well. We'll see how it goes.
For nanowrimo, I’m writing my first novel (draft 2 and complete re-write) as my main project and also drafting a screenplay to submit to a BBC open call in December as my 2nd or side project. They are both romantic stories but very different to each other. I’m very excited.

Multiple projects FTW! This is the first November Nano where I’m not in school (did undergrad, MFA and PhD straight through for about 18 years, lol). I’m trying to finish another revision of my horror TV drama pilot (4th draft) and then I’m adapting it into a novel for Nano (first draft), but I think the novel will be YA instead of Adult. It’s about a disabled person investigating a haunted house and what she finds in it. I might have to go back to work on my PhD dissertation novel (4th draft), but I’m not sure how much feedback I’ll have from beta readers and critique partners by then.
Love the idea of splitting it into morning and afternoon work
It's working really well for me so far! Helps to have a sort of midday "reset"!

Ooooh, that sounds like a fun project! Do you have any gothic romances you'd recommend? I haven't read a lot in the genre!

I have no idea what I’m gonna do. This’ll be my first attempt at NaNoWriMo so I’m a little daunted. I’ve got two stories that both have been pestering my thoughts, so I’m just not sure which I’ll do. One’s a Canterbury Tales type story (except it’s the stories of how and why each member of this traveling party commuted a murder), and the other is a gay Dragonriders murder mystery. I guess I’ve got murder on the mind, lol.

Your not the only one, i recorded a video for preptober, had a whole list of things i want to do, and it feels like i blinked, and it was the 20th.
I didn't post it, and I only did like 2 things on my list. I dont know what project I'm nanoing either. 😂

I haven't decided yet STILL. I'm starting to think I might wake up Oct 1 and roll a die!!! I've got so many things that don't feel finished and a sea of things that pop up and catch my attention

@@KateCavanaugh I'm honestly thinking about picking a couple and then keeping the same wordcount goal, but cycling through them day by day, or rolling a die every day to switch up what I'm thinking about.
I'm writing a story about aliens from Saturn visiting earth and devouring people. Kind of gruesome but so much fun! 😊

It’s interesting seeing other perspectives when it comes to prep. I’ve found that if I do too much prep or leave it to sit too long before I start drafting, it becomes impossible to actually write, so a week to figure everything out is perfect for me :0
