Do you explain in the lesson which substitution you use for the 5 (Dom) and the 2 chord ?
For the 5 you can always use either Dom, diminished, augmented, or altered

I never learn any lick in advance it is contraproductif of the spirit. Totally useless one exception if you want to honor a great solist and you play his licks that make sense, otherwise you should only work so that it can happen each time you play, and this has nothing to do to learn licks.
