I read the original book in 2 days...becasue I was soo intrigued and sucked into the book. I realized that many people have problem s with the science aspect of the book, I think it did a great job explaining things. I think this is down to the language, where as in English if you aren't familiar with latin, a word would have no meaning when you first see it, yet in Chinese the Chinese characters itself have meaning, that when it makes up the words, it made them self explanatory...which makes reading complex concepts really eazy.
Yes, I think most people will find it's surprisingly easy to follow and very addicting.
ball lightning written by Cixin Liu is also good
Zifeng Zhang that’s the previous season of the SBP xd
I read the Chinese version in one afternoon c. 5-6vhours
@@haoyang4801 you sure had a lot of time on that particular afternoon, besides I don't think 6 hours qualify as a single afternoon haha, I certainly didn't have that much time in a day...
The third book of the trilogy....That was so damn cool. Believe me. The first book is just a prelude, only a beding for the later story . The second and the third books are so damn cool. If it is hard for you to comprehend the first book, it is very hard to do with the later books.
2001 1004 the first book was quiet boring...
I believe! IMO was better than Arthur C Clarke and i love Clarke's hard scifi.
@@kerbodynamicx472 Maybe there are some translation issue. Because among the readers in China, people also enjoy with first book as well.
there are 3 story lines in the first book. and one of them is at 1960 ---- the Chinese version of "Great Purge"or"Большая чистка". Many plots in the book are implicating some phenomenon in that era, which is very hard to be understand for western people. You guys (i mean non-chinese people) can understand the words, but you can't taste the feeling.
I'm a Chinse lit major at SEU in Nanjing and my graduate thesis is on this trilogy. I didnt even think book one was all that great but i was like "ill push ahead cuz this author's a big deal and I need to be familiar with this stuff." Books 2 and 3 blew me the fuck away. They're romantic. Action-packed. There's mind-bendy physics shit and space battles and I almost cried during book 3. STILL manages to be one of my fav trilogies ever despite the first one being meh.
I feel like when you say "hard science", so many people will be scared away haha. I read the Chinese version and didn't feel like the science part was all that out of control. I myself have absolutely no astrophysics background whatsoever, and believe most people can enjoy reading the astrophysics "dump" if you allow yourself to just understand the high concept of it, rather than trying to study like it's a textbook. Imagine watching Interstellar or Gravity. The concepts are fascinating.
+Zhewen Dai For me, hard implies more complexities than something like the Old Man’s War series. A lot of friends I have like to be able to wrap their heads around things easily, so it’s a good thing to let people know, I think! It’s definitely a fun read though. I need to continue on soon.
the only hard scifi I read was Greg Egan Diaspora
Yeah when I tried to recommend this series to friends they all set they weren't interested in fear of it being "too technical". I was worried I wouldn't understand it in the beginning, but found no issue throughout the series. Perhaps the only part I had trouble with was the sophons.
The first book is more like an appetizer for the second and the third book, both characters and plot wise.
+victoria zhu That's great to hear that the next two continue to deliver!
i read the trilogy, didn't really like the first volume all that much, felt it went too slow, but what ends up happening in the second and third books are a looot more interesting
+Lambda Well that's good that you liked the second too better, so maybe I'll like them even more than the first!
yes. The second and the third are so amazing. 3D to 2D attacking
I pretty much fell in love with the second book, I can't stop thinking about it... the third book is amazing but such a sad ending :(
Strange thing is, different people prefer different sets of the trilogy being their favorite, it must be the content speaks more to the mind for some people but not for others. Most people find the first book more appealing and think the second book is a bit confusing. But almost everybody think the third book was mind blowing. However my opinion is that the trilogy cant be read separately or you will lose the essence and the grand scope of it. As I personally prefer the first volume and the third installment, but without the second book the story would have made no sense, so people should read all three books to understand the story and have a thorough opinion about it.
But only volume I won the Hugo award, damn
I'm a Chinese reader and i wanna tell u that once you start to read the book, u just can't stop. This book tells a story about the whole universe
I am with you!
the most amazing book
发生啥事?
国人前来为大刘打call!
fun fact : Cixin's pronounced more like Tzzz Shin =), (in the sound of Ci, i is silent. C is like Ssssssss with static lol, so Tzzzz), (the sound of X is like midpoint between English S and Sh). Wang is like "Wahng" but anglicized as "Wehng" often, which is fine too. Thanks for your review, i'm about to pick up this series one of these days, cheers!
I just finished this and loved it. I agree that the cultural aspects were pretty cool. The perception of the West was interesting and didn't seem like it was written by some communist propaganda minister. My favorite character was Ye because she was cold as ice and gangster for an old lady.
+BitsyTheNinja Yeah it was really cool to see my culture through a different lens. Ye was seriously so badass.
BitsyTheNinja u should finish the rest of it and u will feel surprise more things ever u seen
This book is awesome, I can’t stop reading this
The trilogy is excellent, it hearkens back to your Asimov and that heavy 70's/80's sci fi you used to have. 5 stars for the ideas, 3.5 - 4 for the characters. The last book is utterly nuts.
The second volume is a lot more intense than the first one, if you haven't yet read it, you should! By the way, I'm from China and read through the entire trilogy written in Chinese. The logic and philosophy behind it just intrigued me so much as I read through it! Highly recommended for anyone to finish the trilogy.
If someone is still here and still love the books :/ Here to let u know: Official Three body’s first series’ preview got uploaded with English SUB
The cultural revolution part was so insane and vivid. If you know the history of it, the stories made so much sense that they sound real.
Why are you foreigners so interested in the Cultural Revolution
Because it’s exotic to us.
只争朝夕 呵呵,毛泽东杀了这么多中国人,难道让外国人帮我们记住这段历史吗?
I have just read the book.
It is a very good book, specially the second half of the book.
The books is a long series of real scientific ideas that are stretched into fantasy territory.
Unfortunately it does try to explore any of those ideas in detail.
And there are lots of plot holes.
A solar system with 3 suns would be too unstable to exist.
All planets in orbit would sooner or later completely fall apart and not only an advanced civilization would be impossible, life itself would never exist in such a system.
If an advanced civilization wanted to relocate to another planet, would they bother coming to Earth?
All they need is a habitable planet, it doesn't need to be Earth.
I've never read any heavy science fiction but this sounds like a really good book so I am curious. Great review :)
+carolinethereader If you give it a go, I hope you love it!!
That sounds like a recent Doctor Who episode, where scientist (everyone really) were killing themselves after reading some mysterious text. Turns out the text proved to them that they were not real but a simulation, so they were just killing themselves.
Thanks for the review. I am now looking to read the series.
I have never heard the story until today when Lin Qi was murdered.
How dry is the first half of the book ? I made it through “the fellowship of the ring” fine when a lot of my friends gave up on the books.
The best part is the second and the third book, the first one is just a beginner. but they need to be translated to English.
I am a junior year student studying electronic engineering. I've just started reading it for 2 days, in Chinese version. And actually, in my point of view, most of the science part is quite understandable and easy. Maybe it's because I already got spoiled earlier.
As a Chinese reader, I find it really interesting to see what people outside China thinks about this book, as it's probably considered as the most important sci-fi book in China in many Chinese's eyes.
Reading this trilogy has been such a cool experience in terms of being immersed in a different culture for a change, especially in a first contact story. The third one is my favorite but the first one really drew me in for the rest of it.
I've yet to continue the trilogy. I really need to continue. I tried a different book by him but wasn't enjoying, so I should jut pick up the second book already.
第一部的时候,哎呦,不错呦,我们是虫子,不过还得好好活着。
第二部,唔,宇宙好他妈的黑暗,活着没意思。
第三部,累了累了,大刘牛逼。
总结,大刘我爱你。
😂
Good review. Thanks for the tip of not reading the back. Have you read the other two books yet? I would also recommend Michael McCollum's Gibraltar Earth. Steve Gibson on the Security Now podcast always talks about him. He seems like an indie author but excellent science fiction and not too much info dumping. He even has books on how to write science fiction.
I hadn’t noticed; yes his family does disappear...
These books are quite similar to the Three Body sim within them in that once you’ve experienced them it’s very hard to stop thinking about them. Contains the most horrific solution to the Fermi paradox that I’ve ever heard.
Hah! I also wondered about Wang's family and why they were introduced and then completely forgotten about.
CIXIN are two chinese characters. CI is 慈. (pronounce CHEE)XIN is 欣(pronounce SHEEN)
Dude, I’m sold. Not gonna read another word about the book, just gonna dive right in . Thank you for the warning
I read that book back in high school during class, got caught by teacher, but it turned out he's a fan of Cixin.
Enjoy it!
Thanks for a great review. About 100 pages into the book and wondering if I should continue, you convinced me. I have the print and the audio and move back and forth. Love the Chinese aspect of it, that is what drew me to it but it is a little dense and hard science fiction, not my usual reading pleasure. Yet I love, love a reading challenge and think in the end this will be worth the time spent.
Just finished all three within a week's time. Repetitive in some parts but great plot, storyline, imaginative thinking.
When the choice is available, it's actually much faster to read in Chinese. Also, the beauty of the written word is so that you can know a person or Jesus himself so well, without actually seeing his appearance, this is much more so in Chinese than in English.
I completely agree, considering Chinese to be my first language.
I have to hint you that his name pronounced like Leo Tsushin. LOL
+Augustus Zeng Thanks! Goggling the pronunciation did not help me at all
Connor O'Brien hahah
we are all creeps in other guys inspect. But in our star,we also have west culture, east culture.Even in same religion,we also different groups. We realize that we are infinitely small within the scheme of things
I read this earlier this year and really didn't enjoy it. I felt like the main character was useless and never actually did anything. I would've preferred if Liu kept the plot in the cultural revolution like the beginning of the book. I'm looking forward to seeing your review for the next book and if it's worth continuing with the series.
+Pickles Reads Oh wow yeah if it had just been the revolution, that would have been more suspenseful probably!
Amigo el problema de los tres cuerpos es un libro con una historia muy buena algo lenta y retorcida pero es increíble por todo lo que pasamos a leer este primer tomo, que es el comienzo de una aventura catastrófica e incomoda
Just finished this. It has so many interesting concepts, and I found the plot exciting. I also enjoyed the Chinese perspective.
Immediately got The Dark Forest afterwards.
The author of this book. He is an engineer. At Niangziguan hydropower plant in Shanxi

第一部其实给我的感受非常深,充满了历史的宿命感,平淡却暗藏波澜。
@Felix 哈哈哈哈哈,这句话有点难翻译噢
@Felix Yes, this sentence posted by Liv Su is quite, quite hard to be translated...Personally it can be "The first book hits me deeply. It is fiiled with the sense of historic fate, though smoothing, but waves undergoing" XD
第一部有点恐怖……三部曲都有种压抑的感觉
I've heard of this author and this book from other sources. You have gotten me really fired up though. I need to read this!
Spoilers:
I got this book based upon a friend's recommendation and your review when I searched for a review on it. I love it so far. The kindle version is amazing. Right now I'm only 20% of the way through and he is seeing a countdown appear in his field of vision. I still don't know that much about what is going on but so far so good!
I haven't read much sci-fi and it's definitely a genre I would like to explore more, so I might give this one a try. It sounds very intresting😊 Great review😀
+Never ending bookshelf If you check it out, I hope you love it!
I read the Spanish version and it doesn't have a synopsis at the back
Anybody who's read this able to tell me if the whole story is based off a fundamental miss understanding of what an observer is under quantum mechanics or what the big bang is?
Cause I had to stop reading after they got both wrong in the span of like 6 seconds.
A block of cheese is an observer under QM and there wasn't "nothing" before the big bang our understanding of space and time began AT the big bang so there isn't even a before to talk about as we understand it. The only correct answer is "we don't know yet."
After slogging through the bad science in NPC I am just not ready to be hurt yet again by bad science masquerading as hard sci-fi.
I started reading it but somehow abandoned. Here's why.
I like hard science and sci-fi, but I don't like history (unless it's about time travel gone wrong), space operas, military, superpowers, parodies, absurdities. So, the first chapters of The Three-Body Problem seemed a bit too much military-history-ish and some moments seemed exaggerated to almost absurd. But now I know the next chapters are much better, so I'll give the book a second chance.
My personal favorite kinds of sci-fi books are long novels where I can closely relate to the main character. Ideally, first person view, with some intense drama and character development. Time travel, alternative universes, virtual realities (not RPG or fantasy based), body swapping/sharing - that kind of thing.
Gah I read the synopsis! I still want to read though - I think I'm gonna try to read all of the Hugo Award best novel winners at some point, but even regardless of that still very curious about this one (even after spoiling myself haha)
+The Secret Stacks Definitely do give it a go! I know Rachel from Kalanadi is making a run to read all the Hugo Award winners too!
If a novelist, tries to put forward a kind of sociological theory, (such as three-body's "dark forest"), so he certainly should not be to write a science fiction, but should go to write a historical novel, because the conclusion from a extreme conditions of the lab(designed by the author) clearly should not be used to guide the real world, but should have been reported from the history already happend( bad consequences of an social experiment in history, also is not never happen...)
It was history as it happened in the story “the earths past”
Science Fictions sort of intimidates me, but I really loved the Martian, and I've also read some other Science Fiction books that I enjoyed, so I don't know why I'm so hesitant about picking them up.
Sci-fi also intimidates me even though I love sci-fi movies. However, I did not care for The Martian as much as everyone else did. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
I love Sci-Fi movies too. I mean my favorite movie of all time is Back to the Future. Probably not the most science fiction heavy movie, but the whole time travel aspect of it is.
I love those movies as well! One of my favorite movies of all time is The Fifth Element which is also sci-fi. I learn visually so when I see it in movies it makes it easier to grasp.
I don't think I've seen that movie. But I understand what you mean about seeing it visually.
did you already upload book reviews for the second and third book
I haven’t read them yet still
@@ConnorOBrien I really recommand you to read the second one, it is way better than the first one!
it is better if you read it in chinese
I believe that!
yes bro, honestly it is one of the best books i have read
此书是我看过最好的书之一
The english translation is just as good if not better. Liu is not very good as a writer. But his idea is fantastic.
To be honest, the Chinese version is not so good.writing is a bit poor,But reading this book will also get a lot of inspiration.Although I don't know what the English version is, I think it would be better to read the native language.(Please don't laugh at my chinglish, thank you).
I haven't read the English version, but I'm reading it in Chinese right now, and the writing is not really that good.
I thought it was o-kay, nothing more. And felt cheated at the end, because I did not know it's part of a trilogy. The author (and/or translator) is not good at describing emotions, feelings, metaphors, internal character thought. Or maybe I'm just too spoiled with Murakami. Apples and oranges, but I do dare to compare.
Agreed. "not good at describing emotions, feelings, metaphors, internal character thought". And that's just the start of the problems. What a terrible book. Mystery appeal.
Oh boy, hard science fiction is not my forte. It is the main reason why I did not enjoy The Martian as much as everyone else did. There would be pages of him describing science and I just could not grasp it. :/ I actually just purchased The Three-Body Problem so now I am a little worried that I won't like it. I am still going to give it a try because at least now I am prepared for the info dumping. Great review! :)
+The Astonishing Ashley hah yeah I have a feeling you won't enjoy it very much! 😬 thank you though!
Lolz... Martian is soooo not Hard science fiction... In fact it's exactly the opposite...
Easy. Whenever you start seeing science, think mentally it’s just magic... like Harry Potter wielded a wand s whoala it happened
Can you review death's end, also by Liu cixin?
+Bushangels I will when I get to it! I've only read this first one so far.
So it's basically Spy Kids 3?
+ywecur_ Not really lol
OMG, this is the greatest work in our generation. I read the Chinese version, super dope. I doubt that maybe the translation isn't so good.
Maybe! I wish I could read the original to see how it compares.
@@ConnorOBrien the first book digs so deep into culture. Even if you can read chinese character, if you don't know the late history, don't know the "culture revolution"(chinese version of Большая чистка), you still can't understand the book.
*******SPOILER ALERT*********FOR 2nd BOOK IN THE SERIES*********
The english translation is depressing as fk.
I loved the series!
Meto Kaiba yes it is. I found it really Depressing too :( mibdblowing tho
Do the dark forest please!
Great review Connor! They are making this into a movie in China. Expected to be released date by 2017. This book is somewhat a big thing as of now.
Now this made me wanna read the original language instead but I'm way too lazy to read Chinese all over again. Ha!
+Jbb YT Thats really cool. I think it could make a good movie if it has a big enough budget. There are a lot of sci fi elements that would look bad if done halfway.
It's about CNY200million (roughly USD30million). I think it's quite a big budget for a movie in China. I'm never a fan of China TV series until recently they kinda blew me away with their very own Fantasy cum Martial Elements called "Nirvana In Fire". They called it the "Game of Thrones" of China, hands down of the best series I've watched. I might have 50-50 confidence in them after that.
👌
+Connor O'Brien - I love Science - I love Science Fiction so I will be reading this one. This is a Great Review. I love watching your Videos - I just don't know how you read so much in a week's time. You are an amazing Reader - Book Tuber. Happy Reading!
+Linda Klinedinst Yay awesome!! I think you'll like this one if you like physics! I definitely schedule a lot of my free time to go toward reading and this channel, so thank you!!
You are welcome Connor - Yes I love Science and Math.
Europeans and Americans do not understand Chinese phonetic, such as X, Q, I, etc.
The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, produced as Shee Jinping.
Nice and solid book. But still the open question: how did it get so well known in western world....
To be honest, the Chinese understand the Western world more than the West understands China, especially among the educated.....
Tbh, I thought that this book was all about n body problem math. 😂
I see in the comments that I am not the only one to be offended by use of terms “info dump”.
Re the debate if the 'high scifi' sciency parts are too difficult or convoluted, id say both camps are using incorrect terms to critique it. I like high science if there is some tension to the unravelling, some dialogue and development to the character and plot whilst you are fed the information... but..
While this isnt overly sciency, it is simply badly implemented. For instance, the Sun mirror part in the latter 3rd of the book is utterly boring, a completely forgettable passage of theory and science. Why is that? Because the whole thing is taking place in the unseen narrator telling us about Yai's discovery of these things, neither in real time (able to intersplice her emotions/reactions with weight) nor to any character who can help dispute, conflate, build on her observations. We are literally just told the science she observed and participated in at some point so that its plausible how she can connect A to B. Just use a single paragraph! 99% of people wont absorb it without noteworthy effects. Whilst we grasp how this impacts the lore and story, it does nothing for the plot or character itself.
Ask a single person to recount anything interesting in those pages beyond the science itself and theyll be stumped. It is utterly forgetable writing.
Now for contrast, think of Nemesis and how sub-lumimal flight is explained etc in Asimovs books.
This book has so many great ideas but sorely need a massive edit to make it an enjoyable novel where the pacing and science breakdowns always made you feel or discover something about the motivations of the ahem others and the characters on the ground.
What would be some discussion questions about this book?
Your name pronunciation is actually quite good.
Hah I hope to do much better going forward!
Connor O'Brien do you plan to review the rest of the series?
The book is so damn cool.
It's a hardcore version of "His Dark Materials" trilogy somehow. Loved it😁
Damn I thought my playback speed was set to 1.5x ....

Pronounce his name as “tsi-sheen lee-oo”.
Note: the "i" part in your description should be pronounced like "sh-i-rt". So imagine "tsirt" without the -rt part. Also, the surname's pronunciation is better described as "leew", like "few".
建议大家把三体三部曲都看一下!

Actually Chinese culture revolution is the same like Cold War in America, no one was safe at that time, but Chinese revolution is much more evil, hope to help a little bit
Thank you!

It's hard to adapted into the film, even the Chinese can't handle it.
Harrison Lamber well that's because Chinese don't have the technology to adapt it into a decent film. Only Hollywood's tech is capable of manufacturing the magnificent scenes especially those in the video game.
Harrison Lamber Hmmmm…Actually, this book has been adapted into a movie, but because of the post-production of a mess so now has not yet released. So, yeah, that group really just can’t handle it.
I think its very hard now. maybe 10 years or 20 years later.
I hope this movie can be made by Chinese and Holywood together, frankly speaking though I am Chinese but I think Holywood so far has more experience in making sic-fiction movies than Chinese Producers.
PewDiePie anyone?
What?
Yup
Connor O'Brien PewDiePie mentioned this book and I came here to see what it was about😂
@@ryanc.807 which episode?
This book is NOT thick with science. Blindsight by Peter Watts is science. The "info dump" is not really from the science, it's from the stupudbwriting style...the dialogue is totally wooden and expository.
ouch
hah I'm happy you are so passionate about this. These are just my opinions though, so I'm glad you shared yours.
@@ConnorOBrien thanks, bud! Not trying to call you out, I've just seen a huge number of people call this "thick" with science so I was more so riffing on that claim rather than riffing on you. Thanks for the content!
Agreed. The only award this book should win is for the greatest separation between reviewer ratings. It's either 5 stars or 1. Weird. Put me in the latter group.
This book is bad at everything you would expect a Hugo Award winner to be.
Bad writing, bad science, bad logic, bad understanding of scientists.
It is not even necessary to have a science background to see obvious logic faults in the story.
Ye is barely a two dimensional character and she is the most fleshed out character.
I have to laugh when I think about people reading all those pages and pages of pointless exposition with no payoff.
I cannot bring myself to read another one of these silly books
Interestingly, many Chinese readers hold the same view.
I feel like we're the only ones that see an obvious truth. Weird.
汪淼不提家人这个😂说实话还真没人关注到这一点
汪淼有提啊,书的开头就叫他老婆孩子疯狂拍照片
Ur pronunciation of the author's name is so wrong😂😂😂
+Jing Shang Yep. Googling his name pronunciation let me down.
Yes, but a little better than most people unfamiliar with pinyin (the romanization system currently used for standard mandarin). Most people go with a /z/ when they see the 'x', which just grates on my ears. Same with doing a /k/ with 'q'. I still have nightmares about stephen colbert pronouncing 'xiangqi' zeeyang-kee.
You actually got the 'miao' in wang miao fine, but wang is more like wong. If you do want to get the author's name right, the 'c' is closes to ts like the end of 'bits', 'x' is not found in english but the most similar is just our 'sh'. The problem is there's another consonant in chinese actually written 'sh' which is also similar to our 'sh'.
And don't worry about it anyway. You think this asshole Jing Shang could pronounce any of the uvular consonants found in arabic names? My name has one syllable, but chinese people usually pronounce it with three, and can *never* spit it out without two at least. They'd probably change the initial 'k' in your name to a 'j' too... i don't know why they do that, because they have the exact same 'k' sound as us, but all foreign place names with a 'k' become 'j'. Jialefonia = California. Ji'erjisitan = kyrgyzstan.
Americans are not the only provincial ethnocentric dicks on the planet! (I'm assuming you're american.)
why you dooing book reviews? FIrst in china last names will calles as First! and second: why you doing SF reviews when you know nothing about science?
Thodoss Your first point is difficult to understand. I assume you don’t know English strongly, and I also assume you were criticizing my lack of Chinese cultural knowledge. In all of my schooling, I never was taught anything about it, so it’ll take me time to gather it on my own. As for your second point, I do know some science, but I never got to study the type of science relied upon in this book. Regardless, I may review a book as a lay person, and my opinions are still valid.
Great book but The narration of The Three Body Problem on Audible is HORRIBLE!
Whatever filter or edits they did SUCKS!
The three body problem is a sci fi book and the narration sounds like a Western Cowboy imitation talking about Aliens/Space.
Luckily I read it physically then! That sounds unpleasant.
This book is so poorly written. nearly no plot, poor characters. the only thing that saved this book was that one idea which is widely discussed among Fermi paradox theorists. science references are very shallow and make no sense , to me this book is just pretending to be something it isn't. it has one good plot twist that saves this book.
Worse than Dune
I haven't read Dune yet! I need to remedy that.
So worse than one of the most highly rated books in the history of science fiction?
Dune is not really SF. It's Fantasy that just happens to take place on other planets. Can't compare to hard sci-fi.
They should Americanize the books ... wang meow ... Chinese names sure are weird.
Moac I don’t think they should Americanize the books, but a pronunciation guide would be helpful. I’m obviously terrible at it lol
You know what was great about this book...? It was soooo not like the usual clichéd western science fiction... Its the most refreshing book I have read in recent times...
This story has the view of the universe, you can see in the book there are Chinese, Japanese and Westerners. Please don't use your national ID to destroy this wonderful story.
Moac Well. in fact .It's not wang meow in Chinese. It's wang miao.the miao writen by “淼”.such means the expanse of water or something remote. It's hard to explain😂.but It's nothing to do with the meow..lol.i understand what confused you
