I love Mr. Rivera. He’s a true teacher! Bri and KC have been taking over the conversations recently and leaving the poor third teacher on the side lines but Mr. Rivera has been holding his own and not letting them drown him out. Feels like a teacher at work fighting to continue the lesson with 30 kids jumping off the walls lol love him!
We always had the dogs come once a year in high school. They didn’t bring them into classrooms, but took them through the halls, to all the lockers, and around all the cars in the parking lot. One year, the dog alerted to the valedictorian’s car, who’s boyfriend had left his stash in her car that morning. Her mom was a teacher at my school too😳
The lamp in the old school projectors got very hot. Standing next to it sucked. Depending on the heat of the lamp and material of the jacket it could’ve caused a small burn to start.
Same! We had the Elmos in elementary and as I moved up, the switch to document cameras happened. Really cool looking back that we got to see technology advance so much 😊
please come to Indianapolis, Indiana. I have enough material for you from my school career for years!!!! I loved an episode with KC, Bri, and Blanc. I laughed so hard the entire time.
As a substitute I had a student tie his shoe laces around the leg of his chair and couldn't get it untied. He was dragging the chair around the classroom complaining he was stuck, until I told him to go to the principal for help. Miraculously, he was freed from the chair!!!
lol, portable teaching is a surprise everyday. Are we modern or older times today? Our elementary school does not even have laptops ; 9 grade levels with 2-4 classes in each grade level, borrow the same 1 laptop cart.
Ok strap in for this one; I’m a childcare teacher, one day in the middle of a game of musical statues a 6 year old stopped, pulled thier pants half way down, reach through their legs and (I kid you not) pull the poop out of their rear end and proceed to throw it around the room. And of course, I had to clean it up. 🤢🤮
oh my god, that is an indication of something wrong, like mentally, that is not normal behavior by any mean, that kid has psychological issues! im surprised they didnt send you a custodian or such to clean up body fluids.
I’m a long term sub and I’ve definitely used an Elmo after an iReady rep told me how to use it. I’m not sure if that’s the brand name or not… I love watching you guys btw I’m a substitute teacher who works everyday and sometimes accepts long term assignments. S/o to you guys 💪🏾🔥
When I was in high school (early 1970’s), in a lower level English class, not the most well behaved students. One day we had a sub. She walked in and announced she had taught in a reform school so don’t mess with her. Me being one of the few good kids in class, said to myself she has ___ up now. She had thrown down the challenge and it was accepted. Before 20 mins had passed she was running from the room crying. Never saw her again.
My school is prek-8th grade and the middle school kids(5-8) have Yondr pouches and it has been a game changer. They lock them up in the morning and then unlock them at the end of the day. The kids hold onto them in the pouch, but it’s locked all day.
Completely agree with Bri. Bringing in a dog is treating them like criminals. Even if there are drugs, that's soooo not the way. I'm a psychotherapist and that is SO not the way to go, unless you want me to have a full office.
I agree with Bri about the dogs 🙌🏼 you never know what kinds of experiences kids have had with police and/or dogs. Plus, kids possessing substances is usually a symptom of bigger problems.
yes but having police and the dog at the school can also give people some positive experiences and they get to know the cops who work at the schools and can often build up a positive rapport with each other.
I'm in IT at a school district. Elmo is a brand that made document cameras. Our teachers have Hovercams now. Also yes, I think the teacher in the story was referring to an old overhead projector. The newer ones on the ceiling don't get as hot on the outside plus I don't think you could throw a jacket over it unless the projector was sitting on a table or something.
I was in the classroom 27 years. After I retired, I had former students from years before tell me that the water bottle they always had on their desk...had vodka and sports drink in it. I have to admit it never once occurred to me that might happen. Naive much, Jose?
Elmo is the brand. In our district during COVID we got iPads that hooked up to a docking arm. The iPad camera could be used as an “Elmo” for hard copy documents that we couldn’t screen share on Zoom. I never used it. It’s still in my closet and this year we got new ones. Still never used it. I’ll scan documents into my laptop and project on the SMARTBOARD
My son's middle school has archery for gym class. It blew my mind the first time he told me. I grew up playing dodgeball or kickball for gym lol Never was archery an option haha
Unrelated to the brilliant shares from teacher heroes... But, like Bri, I love cats and dogs (and have both, even with allergies 😅.) I wonder what that means about how we flex to relate to our students/coworkers. 🤔💗
They used to have us put our bags in the hallways and the dogs would walk through the hallways. They did this in high school and middle school. The dogs would start barking in the hallway. But the only times I ever saw something go down was when these two kids were sitting in each other's lap and sharing a thc vape and edibles in our spanish class. But we heard about an elementary school kid who brought vodka to school in a water bottle, and these 3rd or 4th graders were sharing it around.
Lord i don't even the actual lesson but somehow we got to talking about how we are similar to other things... Thinking I'd give them a cool fun fact I shared that we share some DNA with bananas... BIG MISTAKE months later they Will still randomly shout out "I ama banana" best part is this was 2nd grade so i had no hope of explaining my way out of it or changing the topic 😅😂
We had the drug dogs come into our middle school recently. Students had to go out into the hallway as they did their job (dogs), leaving all their stuff in the classroom.
If the dogs came into the class room we knew they were looking for something specific. if they were doing just a regular walk-through, they would only check the halls in the lockers
I've had the dog come through my room 3 times this year. The AP and the police officer, along with the dog handler, come to the room and have all of yhe students go in the hall while the dog goes through the room. If it hits on anything they ask me who sits there so they can take the student to the office to do a backpack search.
We had teachers who’d keep the phone for the semester/ or yr locked in a cabinet. I understand students being disruptive during class but take the phone until the end of class. That’s not fair to the student who might actually need it outside of school.
When I was in middle school one of my elective teachers wouldn't even let us have water bottles because he had a kid one time drinking what he thought was water... Nope she passed out from Vodka.
Cellphones cause so many problems in school and have a negative impact on the school community because of how most kids use their phones. At my last job kids were starting fights and filming them with their phones constantly! Parents really need to step up in this area and take more responsibility. NO your child doesn’t need a cellphone. You can get a smartwatch for them that tracks them and enables parents to text and call. The excuse of parents needing to be in constant contact with their kids 24/7 via cellphone only doesn’t hold up. I work at a school where a lot of kids parents have figured this out and they have smart watches. There are affordable ones out there and in fact they are cheaper than cellphones. So that whole safety argument needs to be put to sleep. I’m finally at a school that supports teachers in this and acknowledges how distracting the phones are and doesn’t allow them in class. Teaching is so much better now. More schools need to take a stand on this.
Drug sniffing dogs in school are fine by me! I mean in most businesses in security, where safety is a major concern. That’s where they’re at to begin with. I mean heck you can’t even walk into Disneyland or Disney World without a drug sniffing dog standing there.
I graduated high school in 2010 but we used to have drug dogs come into my high school and we would have to stay in the classrooms and the dogs would walk through the locker bays and sniff the lockers. They never came into classrooms though and nobody was allowed in the hallways while the dogs were there
Our district still won’t let the kids read books online. It makes no sense! We are a Title One district and can’t afford books so why not allow books online? And as far as the drug dogs, we are living in a time where nurses have to use Narcan!! I say bring on the dog! And our elementary school is new and the water dispensers are all for refilling bottles or Stanley type containers, no fountains! And we use ELMO’s.
The fact your district does not allow books to be read online blows my mind. There’s so many amazing options…..RAZ Kids, SORA, Epic Books. It’s a great way to expose kids to the world outside their doors while at the same time helping with fluency and so much more. I’m so sorry, I just don’t understand the why not.
@@kristinc4306 Agree! All of our students carry around Chromebooks and even the babies, PreK and Kindergarteners have IPads but they still have to choose books in high school either from old classroom sets or purchase their own paperbacks. It makes no sense! I just downloaded Pride and Prejudice from Amazon for free!
Elmo is the brand and I remember that I didn’t get one because I taught Kindergarten. They were only for 4th-6th. It was almost 6 years later before the lower grades began to get them.
We called the updated projectors elmos in my schools. They replaced the old ones that had to use clear paper i with the magnifying glass thing. I was in elementary when those were replaced.
Announcements are the worst. At the beginning of the day we have scheduled announcements and those are not bad. The schedule was created to have two minutes of announcements but when class is interrupted by an administrator to have additional announcements, that should not be allowed. I will give you an example; we are warned when we will have practice earthquake drill, evacuation drills or fire drills and we as teachers are to teach the students what to do. Then right before an evacuation drill, an administrator goes over what we the teachers explained. Why? Tell me Why? If you are going to do that, then you teach the students what to do. Administrators, if you like talking, just to hear your voice, then do not tell us to teach the students what to do. You do it. 🤐
I am sorry but dogs can smell more than what a human can. It is a necessity and a situation like that. If it is a random dog, then yeah, that makes sense.
Wait Bri hear me out. Some people have service or guide dogs that they need with them at school. Idk man I can’t agree with you on your opinion here, but we can respectfully disagree.
If the dogs help , than bring more dogs. Today these kids need more than that. Back in the 70 & 80's, we got paddled and it didn't kill us. If these parents needed to teach these kids, they would praise these teachers. But not all kids are bad.

You guys cracked me up today. Thanks for the laughter 😂

When I was in High School the drug sniffing dogs always stopped at the Principals son's locker. He was the biggest dealer in the school.
Omg!
The dog is better trained than the kids! 😂
At ours school district here, they have a no-tech policy. They have pouches they put them in.

I'm 32, I learned archery in high-school lol!!!
I’m 38 and we did too, it was really fun

I'll be doing a sub to teacher route while finishing my BA degree.
I second that. We need more sub stories on here. I’ve been subbing since 2017 and the stuff I’ve heard is crazy among kids.
