SOLO Goose Hunt Over a SMALL Decoy Spread | Goose Hunting 2023

- A big cold front is moving in, bringing snow and frigid temps. Matt is out for a solo late season goose hunt in a new spot. He sets up in a cedar tree blind, hoping to bag some Canada geese flying in the harsh conditions. The geese didn't work the best but Matt was able to persevere and have a good hunt, despite the cold and some poor shooting.

Not having stress is the best way to succeed at work.
Yep
Glad to have your videos up and running. Getting me all pumped up for the season. Be careful out there in the cold solo runs
Thanks Chris!
What a tropper staying out that long.
Thanks for posting.
I couldn't tell how well the birds were responding to the call they were certainly looking at the decoys.
I would only suggest adding some clucks and excitment in to the calling if your normal calling isn't working..
Thanks again for the hunt.
Appreciate it!
Geese are hard to kill with body shots, so my experience says lead em more and try for the head/neck shot. Plus, if it’s 25yds to the decoys, it’s 35-40 to flying geese…not short shots for a tough to kill critter. Good shoot anyway 👍
Yep, typically try for the head and neck as well but just wasn't leading enough that day
I just seeing the color difference in the dead goose to the dekes has to make you think these companies have no idea how to produce to color match a live goose.
I've seen some bad paint jobs over the years. Can't complain about these though.
Exactly. Seems like they are more concerned with catching the eye of the consumer than the eye of the bird. Look at what our grandparents used compared to today's mega extreme triple HD full bodies.
@@billdoms1579
yes, same way with fishing lures, catches fisherman not fish
Totally disagree too that companies cannot match the hatch because birds or geese in this case have different shades of color depending where and when. Unless they paint them purple or pink I wouldn't say they can't match the hatch. Hell, who knows the birds seen the normal colors year after year maybe a pink decoy set might draw them in!
Nice video, what king of range finder you have?....looking for one....Cheers 😀👍
Thanks! Aofar Range Finder
Good hunt, man it’s cold out there!! Yeah with wind anything can happen
Thanks!
My personal favorite is when they get hit hard, lock their wings and sail to Narnia 🤦🏻♂️.. your pattern looked like it was making contact on the majority of the shots. Nice work putting 3 late season birds on the ground.
Thanks man! Late season geese are tough
When was this filmed?
Last winter
❤❤❤❤❤
👍🏻
What size shot were you using? Curious, I'm not a goose hunter, ducks only.
Bismuth 2s
That is strange as good a shot as you are I would have thought that would have rolled them. Great video as usual@@HighPrairieSportsmen
@@raybishop3176 just not a great day of shooting on my part.
what is the title of the soundtrack that I can't remember?
Blacklake Waters
Can say I’ve been there ! Great Hunt, going to check out those Venari shells !
Thanks!
Hi there, I watch a lot of your videos, many thanks! Quick question - you are using 12 gauge, what ammo and shot size you are using? Thanks!
I'm using various brands of 2 3/4" and 3" 2s and BBs, steel.
Thanks!
gotta check your camera footage, might not be leading them enough....just my 2 cents. good weather for birds, tough on humans..LOL
No, you're correct. Just behind them
Great hunt! A rugged hunt! One to be proud of on all counts.😅
It was some tough conditions for sure
Might a had her choked a little to tight???
No, it was the choke I always use.
Solo hunting it is the best!!!!!
Definitely!
Гарне полювання, дякую за відіо.
👍🏻
You've probably realised from reviewing the shotkam footage, but part of the issue is that you're stopping the gun just before you pull the trigger. See the second shot on the first goose at 3:08, second shot at 4:41, second shot at 6:49 as some examples.
Were you using BB steel again?
Yep, just wasn't following through and shot behind. I was using bismuth 2s
Great video as usual.
Thanks!
thanks for the 'cool' teaser - since i've been sweating buckets this week
I'm right there with you! I'm over this heat
What model is your Remington ? Looked like you were right on them
Remington Versamax
Do you like the venari shells or boss shells? Which do you prefer?
I'd probably go with Boss but I haven't shot enough Venari to accurately compare.
The reason you are not hitting the same is because you are wearing a hood over your head. This hood in between your face and the stock of the gun. That is pulling your face away from the gun and causing your shot to go way more to the right than normal. That means your lead is being increased because your rear site, which is your eye, is not where it's suppose to be. Take the hood off to shoot and undo your buckle on the waders because the butt of your gun is resting on that as well. It's so important to have the rear site, which is your eye, in the same place at all times.
That was probably it. I keep my right buckle undone every hunt for that exact reason
@@HighPrairieSportsmen I misunderstood you because I thought you said somewhere you where left handed and you mentioned you keep the right buckle undone. SO, with you being right handed and the extra clothing between the face and gun your eye is being pushed to the left which means your pattern is moved to the left and it shortens your lead so you are shooting behind the birds. At the same time the hood is raising your head up off the stock because of the thickness of the clothing between cheek and gun. This will also make your gun shoot high possibly going over the top of the bird at the same time. Which ever direction you move your head out of proper alignment is the direction your pattern moves to off of dead center. Raise your head, it will shoot high. Move your cheek to the left and your pattern will go left off center. Proper gun fit and having your eye in the proper place is the most important. Good luck!!!
I'd say three honkers is a pretty worthwhile outing.
Oh yeah, not a bad day at all
Could you tell how you were missing after watching the shotkam footage?
I was just behind them
@@HighPrairieSportsmenThat's what I was thinking but it threw me off that you said you thought you were leading too much. Good testimony for ShotKam
@michaelbruns3870 yeah, hard to know for sure in the field some days.
Nice hunt Matt! Barry
Thanks Barry!
