Zola Budd didn´t trip anybody ,Decker stumbled & went for an oscar winning penalty but didn´t pull it off. The slow motion replays prove this. I suppose You didn´t get to see this on your T.V. channel but I appreciate that you didn´t see the slow motion re-play because I live in Spain so I am now used to these omissions due to certain media showing only what interests them .
I had forgotten about this great race by Decker. She looked awesome and it was a great win over Puica and Budd. If they had 5,000m in the worlds and Olympics in those days Budd could have been an Olympic champion, but she didn't have the finishing speed for this distance. I'm still not completely over Decker's crybaby reaction to the fall in 1984, but she was a great runner.
Fun fact Zola budd was only 19 in this , her dad abused her (and she got no money from running) she was only 11 when her own sister died of cancer and last but not least the whole world hated her because she was from South Africa/decker faking the trip
Keep looking at other race videos. Zola was able to match Maricica's finishing speed a few times. (They are favorites of mine.) It's just that often like in this 3,000m Zola is running too far on the outside. She could have been in front of Maricica here. Zola was 2.00 seconds behind Maricica here and she wasted more time than that running wide. In the Zurich world record Mile by Decker, Zola ran the exact same split time as Maricica from 1500 meters to the 1 Mile finish. It's just that she strategically let herself get behind Maricica at certain points in races and she would finish behind Maricica.
Thanks bobtrouper. You have uploaded all the Zola Budd track races I remember. I'll keep a look out for any I haven't. Very much enjoyed all of them. The was a World Cross-country from 1986 Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Team GB won the Gold medal. That would finish it of nicely.....
Mary did qualify to run in the 1984 Olympics in the 1500m by placing 2nd to Ruth Wysocki (4:00.18). Mary ran 4:00.40. Mary passed up the 1500 in the Olympics because it required 4 races in 4 days (3000, 1500, 3000, 1500). Maricica Puica raced both events and won gold and bronze. When Mary gave up her 1500 spot it Missy Kane was added to the team. There is a history of the USA Olympic Trials on the internet. I'll send it to your mailbox. Read pages 205 -206 of "The History of the US OT".
Decker looked very strong. Nice finish. Puica was 35 at the time. It was probably a little past her prime. Budd, her best race is probably 10K. Budd just doesn't quite have the 6th gear in world-class competition for under 5K. With the quality of 🏃♀️ 👟s they had back then l think shoes would have diffently helped her. I heard later on that she starter wearing running 👟s. Great 🏁 by all the competitors.
I was there when they ran this race! I guess Mary could have run a 14.40 for the 5000 in 1982. In july 1982 she ran a 1.58 (in Europe) for the 800m and a 31.35 for the 10000m (in Eugene) in 48 h.
Have you ever ran track and field? Mary was behind her, boxed in and tried to get into lead by scraping her spikes (two times!) at Zola Budds bare foot.
Fun fact Zola budd was only 19 in this , her dad abused her (and she got no money from running) she was only 11 when her own sister died of cancer and last but not least the whole world hated her because she was from South Africa/decker faking the trip
@@munnikandy4154 She got some money. She was 14. And it wasn't cancer. Jenny died from an allergic reaction to the drugs given her. From "Zola" page 19: "Of fleeting concern to me at the time was the fact that my Jenny, eleven years my senior at twenty-four, was about to go into hospital to have a lump in her arm removed. But what at first I thought would be routine surgery went horribly wrong, as Jenny developed an allergy to the treatment and died six days later." She died on 9 September 1980. In later years Zola said that it turned out to not be cancer that Jenny had. The book Zola has mistakes in it though. I know the sports errors it has. "The whole world" did not hate Zola. Many of us have always liked Zola very much.
thegreatalyssa She was not 🤦🏼♀️ 14 when she ran this she was 18/19 and no she did not get any money because of her alcoholic dad he took all her earnings (ps i know Zola budd personally she is one of the nicest people you would ever meet) 🇿🇦
Grand Prix Final in it's first year. Mary Decker, 8:25.83. Maricica Puica, 8:27.83. Zola Budd, 8:28.83. Lynn Williams, 8:40.27. Cindy Bremser, 8:57.40. Aurora Cunha, 9:08.00. Christina Boxer, 9:13.00. Overall GP Standings: Mary Decker, 69. Stefka Kostadinova, 63. Judy Brown-King, 63. Jarmila Kratochvilova, 59.
Sorry, but Decker was not in this sort of form in 1984. This race does not "prove" she would have won gold at the Olympics. Puica was running brilliantly in 1984 and would have been very difficult to beat that day.
James McLuckie hard to say. although you HAVE TO GIVE the edge to decker in 84 1) she's racing in l.a. her country 2) she never lost to puica and 3) her best times were better then puica..
No, sorry. I'm not giving the edge to Decker in 84. Puica had a faster 3,000m time than her that year. Also, Decker was injured. Joan Hansen (Decker's Athletics West team mate who finished 8th in the Olympics) posted on another video that Decker was training in a swimming pool before the Olympics because she couldn't run freely. Don't get me wrong, I think Decker is a legend and I admire her greatly. But she would not have won the 84 Olympics.
+James McLuckie it's still your opinion and conjecture.. ONLY mary, not her teammates knows the truth. of how injured she was, what she was in and what she was truly thinking and feeling...that being said, like i posted before one has to go with what is true 1) decker had never and would never lose to puica, 2) her best times were better then puica and 3) she was running in l.a., her own country where most of the stadium crowd would be pulling for her....
+thomas schmitz Of course it's my "opinion" and "conjecture", as is your own post. The three points you posted are statistics (the first two) and genuine conjecture (the last one). They are not "truths" in relation to this race. The only truth is that Decker fell and Puica won. Two further facts: Puica was running faster than Decker in 84. And the truth of Decker's injury was quite well known. In the USA coverage of the Olympics race, the commentator openly discusses her recent achilles tendon injury. The fact that Decker, an aggressive front runner, allowed Budd to take the lead, is an indication (not a "truth") that this wasn't the Decker of '83 or '85.
James McLuckie hmm, good points... i guess we both have our opinions.. i guess i will end it with saying that in "the long run" decker was better then puica, and never lost to her, simple as that.... thanks for the back and forth... cheers...
shottut: she couldn't compete in the 1500 due to her injury in the fall in the 3000. the 1500 was raced afterwards. as far as steroids, she was cleared!...
No doubt in my mind, if Mary Decker Slaney could have finished that 3000m race in LA, she would have won. Puica would have finished in second, and Sly would have had to settle for bronze.
This was one year after Zola Budd tripped her in the Olympics. I am more than certain that Mary Decker-Slaney would have gladly traded this victory for an Olympic Gold Medal.

@@munnikandy4154 You cut in front of them without being a full stride ahead, as the rules require. Still, Slaney should have backed off rather than trying to hold her ground.
In your mind....it's all water under the bridge, if she was an intelligent runner she wouldn't be boxed in like that and deliberately try to injure Zola Budd
Zola Budd clipped Mary Decker-Slaney on her Heel, and you believe that Slaney would actually piss away a Gold Medal to start some sort of contravercy to where everyone will come to her Pity Party? Why do you think Budd tried to apologize to Slaney after the race, but Slaney almost wanted to take a swing at her? For your information, I live in Los Angeles(Where the 1984 Summer Olympics were held) and I was as close as you can be to see the action. For you to say what you did is preposterous!
This race helps to clarify the incident in the 1984 Olympics and why Mary Decker Slaney was so upset by it. Just put yourself in her shoes. Mary knew that there was no one in the race who could beat her in that race. She was certain to win the Gold Medal that she always dreamed of. Then, when you see it taken from you by someone else making a mistake knowing your only chance is gone forever, how could you ever recover from that?
She would not have won...you should've seen the strain on her face as she qualified for the 3000 final. I love Mary, but Maricica was too strong that day.
She never qualified to compete in the 1,500 meters... so no she couldn't compete in the 1, 500 meters. The US has never changed it's rules regarding how one qualifies to represent their country.
